IBI-HB CURLER 0R. WAV
Application nea ,January e1, l1.9.23. 'serial No.. 615,975.. f
To all wlw/m, t may wwwa:
ABe it 'known that I, AUGUSTUS ALBERT lllnsr., aetizen of .the United Stat-ee, residing at 46 East lillow A(lrrove Avenne, 'Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State 4orf Pennsylvanie., have .invented new and useful Improvements n a Heir Curler or Waver, of which the following is a specification- My invention relates to new., useful and importent lnprovenlentsin e heir enrler or Waver, and has for its primary object to provide .Ineens for` preventing the Clamping member from obstructing the Winding. of hair upon the 'body member 1n my experiments I have used metal, celluloidand fiber, tubular bodies of oirular, square .and oval .formation While the Clamping member has been made of flat spring brass, .steel and celluloid andalso of roi/1nd wire bent to form parallel strands as will be hereinafter set forth.
Another object of the invention isto prof vide a hollowbody having LAa restricted open ing at each endy and a' clamping member loosely and Vslidably connected with `.the bod)7 whereby it may beslid thereinto or clamped on the outside thereof. Y
lVith ,these ends inviewd. this invention consists in the details of construction. and combination of elements vhereinafter set lforth and then specifically designated by the claims. 1
.In order that those skilledin the artto which this invention appertains.7 may nnderstandllow to make and use the ,same7 I. will describe its onstruction in detail, referring .by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, inwhiohzf Fig, 1, is a side elevation .of a hair curler or Waver embodying my. invention with the Clamping member closed or clamped outside of the body aswhen .holding hair. o
Fig. 2, is a similar view'with the clamp ing member inside. of body.
Fig. 3, is likewise a similar view with the Clampingflnember .pnlled out ready to be thrown over for clamping, as shown in Fig. l.
Fig. 4, is an enlarged longitudinal seetional View of the device.
Fig. .5, is an enlarged View of end of .the body member. e'
v Fig. 6., is a .similar View ,of the hinge end .the looking thereof.
F ig. 7, is a .sideelevation on aredueed .Scale ofthe eurler .0r` waiver .showing .the manner in which the hair is wound thereon and illustrating how the clamping member is positioned out of .the vway .of the .lingersl when wrapping .the hair on the device.
Fig. 8, is a plan or face View of .the metal blank' from whieh Vthe body ymember f is formed.
Fig. .9, is a plan View .of .the flat metal I clamping member. Y F ig. l-O., is a plan View of thereund wire clamping member which may be used in place .of the one shown in F ig.l 9, v
In carrying out my invention las here em.u
bodied7 1 represents a resilient clamping member preferably formed of .thin ysheet metal such as brass ,and Vat one end is formedV the locking hook 3 whilethe other .end is curved. bent or Vcoiled .to form an eye .as .at for the reception loftheaxle 5 which may be formed of wire ora suitable equivalent, 'f
1f found .desirable a .clamping member 2, Fig, V.10may be used in place of the one above described and .said clamping member I 2 iS formed of lround'wre foldednpon itself to provide :two parallel strands and the ends of these strands coiled orbent to .form eyes `8 for the reeeptionof lthegaxle 6 lthe same .as Athat designated .bythe numeral 5. The doubled .Qr folded f.end is bent to produce a looking hook l .for the seme purpose as `the .hook .3.
The hollow loods7 member. 9 has theends 10 .and 1l, at the hinge Aend of the device,
bent inward at ,rightV angles to partially form the restr-etedopenng .through which the clamping member projettev t0 eet els steps .for theerle eened by the demping member to prevent the accidentel Withdrawal of the latter. .The projections or extensions 12. andi13 onthe same end of the bodyare likewise bentinward at right angles'overthe parts 10 andll while theypor-` tion 14 is bent inward'or ldownward to meetl the parts and 11 thus completing the formation of the restricted opening shown in Y Fig. 6.
attached, is inserted in the body by pushing the hook` end through the locking end of said body prior to bendingthe projections 16 and 17 andafter the hook end of the clamping member emerges from the hinge end of the body said projections 16 and 17 as well as the parts 12 and 13 are bent into position, it being understood that the balance of the hollow'body have been previously formed. Y
The clamping member is now locked into the body member it is slidable and adjustable so that it may be withdrawn until the axle engages the parts 10 and 11 or it may be reinstated in said body by moving it to .a position substantially equal to that shown in Fig. 3 and then sliding the same longitudinally as will be obvious.
It is common practice to make hair curlers or wavers three inches long and with the clamping member extended the curler measures approximately six inches or said clamping member may extend out from the body at an angle thereto thereby increasing the size in another direction so thatby comparison the improvement in my devicerbecomes apparent because, for waving or curling the hair, it is necessary or desirable in using any kind of waver to hold the same close to the head while the hair is wrapped thereon which is practically impossible, so far as I am aware, in devices of this character constructed in accordance with present day methods. In my inventionl the clamping arm is out of the way being encased within the body member, hence the hair may be wrapped on the body without the clamping Yarm interfering with the operations.
To wave the hair it is wrapped on the device starting from the center of the body.
The linal operation in the use of my device is the same as in common practice wherein, after the hair has been wrapped on the body member the clamping member is Y bent over and held in place by engaging the f hook with the catch 15 which is accomplished by giving a sidewise movement of the clamp- The usual bowing of the clamping member,
when a quantity of hair is used, is common with my device and similar curlers. A
Modifications within the scope of the appended claims may be made without departing from the principle or sacrilicing the advantages of this invention;
Having thus fully described my invenn tion, what I claimfas new Vand useful is 1. A hair curler having a clamping mem ber attached to an adjustable and disappearf ing axle,l and a hollow body member capable of enclosing the clamping member. y
.2. As an article of manufacturea hail` curler consisting of a hollow .body and a clamping member Vslidably connected with said `body for insertion inisaid body or clampingon the exterior thereof. Y
3. A hair curler comprising a hollow body, a clamping member havingkmeans at one end for detachable connection with said f body and having means at its other end for hinged and slidable connection withv` said body, said clamping member `adapted to be inserted in the body from the hinged end when the irst named end is disengaged fromg'V the body. Y
t. A hollovx7` body having a restricted opening at one end and provided Vwith a catch at the opposite end, and a clamping member slidably connected with the body y and insertible therein through the restricted opening, said clamping member having a hook for coaction with the catch on the body.
5. opening at one end and provided with a catchl at the opposite end, a clamping member projecting` through the restricted opening and slidable 'bodily within the body, so as to be completely housed said Amember having a hook at one end for coact'ion with the catch on the body, and means at the other end to permit ot a hinged action of the clamping member relative tothe vbody A hollow body having a restricted andfto prevent the accidental displacement of the clamping member.
6. YA hollow body having'a restricted opening at one endand provided with a catch at the opposite end, a clamping member projecting through the restricted Vopening and adapted to be housed withinI the body, said member having a hook at one end for coaction with the catch on the body, and an axle carried by the opposite end of the clamping member for engagement with the Walls of the body in the locality of the restricted opening to prevent the accidental displacement of said Clamping member.
7. A hair curler including a hollow body, and a still' clamping member slidable Within lo said body.
8. A hair curler comprising tWo members one of which telescopes Within the other,4
