6 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful im-' provements in a hair waving device.
'I'he invention has for an object the construction of a device as mentioned which is characterized by a longitudinal absorbent casing containing a chemical which when moistened will generate suflicient heat to impart a permanent wave to a. tress of hair, and an arrangement for holding the tress wound upon the said longitudino.1 casing.
A feature of the invention resides in the fact that the heat is generated within the interior of the tress of hair.
It is old to roll tresses of hairupon core elements 5 and to apply chemicals over the rolled tress which is capable of generating suflicient heat to impart a permanent wave to the hair. The disadvantage of the prior method resides in the fact'that the heat is imparted to the exterior of the tress. It
m has been generally recognized that better waves are formed if the'heat is applied inside of a roll of hair.
A further disadvantage of applying the chemical pads externally upon the roll of hair is that it requires quite complicated mechanism to hold it in position and makes it impractical for home use.
In accordance with the instant invention it is particularly simple for one to wind a tress of hair 50 about the longitudinal casing without necessarily being skilled or trained in the art of permanent hair waving. Thus, with this invention it is now possible for women to give themselves a permanent wave'at home.
35 A further object of the invention is to construct the longitudinal casing of a greater length than is necessary for the tress of hair wound thereon, and to provide an arrangement for holdposed to confine the chemical material within a central portion of the absorbent casing so that the end portions which are bent around the roll of hair do not generate heat.
vision of a retarding agent to retard the generating of heat for a short period of time after the longitudinalcasing has been moistened so that i5 there is ample time toadjust it properly upon As a further object of this invention it is pro- 'A further object of the invention is the pro-- the hair before too high a temperature of heat is generated. I
' Another object of the invention is to so construct the hair waving device that it may be used in conjunction with prior pads or protectors used 5 to prevent steam from reaching. the scalp during the waving process.
A further object is the construction of a device as described which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a rea- 10 sonable cost.
.For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objectsa'nd advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set'forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:-
Fig. 1 is aside elevational viewof a device constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken onthe line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hair waving deviceengaged upon a. coil of hair and shown in, relation to a protector for preventing steam which is generated during the waving process from reaching the scalp.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of a hair waving device constructed according to another embodiment of this invention.
The hair waving device comprises a longitudinal absorbent casing l0 containing a chemical II which when moistened will generate suflicient heat to impart a permanent wave to a tress of hair. Preferably,.the casing l 0 should be of cloth material. It may beformed from a strip of cloth which is bent around into tubular shape and which is held closed by lines of stitches l2. 'The ends of the tubular shape are also closed by 40 transverse lines of stitches I2. The chemical H, for example, may be powdered calcium oxide.
A means is associated with the absorbent casing and chemical material for holding the device upon a .coil of hair. This means consists of a pliable member I3, such as a piece of pliable wire extending through the casing and embedded in the powdered chemical II. when the tress, of hair l8 from ones scalp, indicated by the dot and dash lines I8, is Wound upon the center portion of the device the end portions may be bent over the hair, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, to maintain the hair in the coil, The pliable wire l3 will act to maintain the end portions in the bent positions. 5
. The operation 01' the device is as iollows:--
First, a conventional protector for preventing steam from reaching the scalp should be applied to a tress of hair at the scalp l8. In Fig. 3 one 5 form of such protector is shown. It comprises a pair 01' hollow members Ma and lib which are detachably connected with each other in edge alignment by holding elements l5. These holding elements are adapted to firmly engage together the adjacent edges of the members (I and llb to prevent steam from passing between these parts and reaching the scalp. The members Ila and Ill), when engaged on the head form a-receptacle with an open top into which the hair coil and hair waving device engage. Further details oii this protector will not be given,
a as it forms no part of the invention and similar protectors are generally known,
The tress of hair I8 is moistened with a suitable waving solution, as for instance, an ammonium solution. The hair waving device [is then moistened and quickly applied to the by engaging the outer end or the tress l8 upon the center 01' the waving device and rolling. the
waving device to form the curl. When the tress of hair has been completely rolled upon the device the ends are bent over, as shown in Fig. 3,
' to hold it in position. The moisture from the absorbent casing aiiects the chemical therein and the heating action begins. The heat itseli reaching the moistened casing vaporizes the moisture and accelerates the chemical reaction. The device is permitted to remain upon the hair until it becomes cool and is therrremoved by first bending straight the end portions.
In Fig. 4 another embodiment of the invention is disclosed which distinguishes, primarily, from the prior form in an arrangement wherein the bent end portions of the hair waving device contain fillingmaterial instead of the chemical.
Therefore, these end portions will not generate heat and all 01' the heated portions will be localized within the coiled tress ll.
. More specifically, the device comprises a longitudinal absorbent casing 20 containing chemical material 2| which, when moistened, will generate sufllcient heat to impart a permanent wave to a tress of hair. This casing 20 is disposed within another and longer absorbent casing 22..
The end portions of the outer casing 22 are filled withinert filler material 23 such as cotton, hair, etc. A pliable member 2| engages through the interior casing 20 and has its end portions extending through the filler material 23. The in-! ner casing 20 has the inner wall 20 thereof coated with a water-soluble material such as glue, etc. This water-soluble material initially prevents the moisture from reaching the chemical 2|, but after a short period of time, dissolves and the heating chemical action commences. The dot and dash lines 22' indicate the end portions of the device bent inwards to show the shape of the device when applied to a coil or hair.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularlty,-I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrange- 7 ment of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit or the scope oi the appended "claims. 4
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United 75 States Letters Patent is:-

3. A hair waving device comprising a longitudinal absorbent casing, a chemical within said casing acting as a filler for said casing and simultaneously adapted when moistened to generate suihcient heat to impart a permanent wave to a tres oi. hair wound on said casing, and a pliable member on the end portions of said casing whereby the end portions may be bent over for holding the device in position on the said tress of hair,,
said casing being of flexible material adapted to bend and conform with said pliable member.
