No. 72,770 3 Claims. (Cl. 132--9) This invention relates to a novel and useful appliance or aid for use in the bleaching of a persons hair or closely related uses.

It has been discovered that the hair can be treated for purposes of bleaching while in a container positioned close to the scalp. A lock or a number of strands of hair are enclosed or held within the container while the bleach is applied with a swab. The bleach may be applied with the hair protruding from the top of the container. The hair is then tucked down into the container and a cover or top with which the container is provided is applied to it. It has been found that the bleach acts three or four times as fast by this type of treatment or method and the temperature of the hair is elevated as the same is treated and confined in the container. In practicing the invention, a number of containers are used or placed over the head like a bunch or group of curlers. The hair is entrapped in the containers as described, then treated with bleach and the containers are closed for a prescribed amount of time and the hair is then released. It has also been found that the hair adjacent the scalp becomes bleached about three or four times as fast as the hair away from the scalp so that upon subsequent treatment of the hair adjacent the roots and near the scalp which have not received the bleach, said hair portions can read ily be bleached in a relatively short period of time such as a half hour.

In practicing the invention, a particular form of appliance, that is container, is necessary and/ or desirable. The herein invention provides preferred forms of containers, that is appliances, which are preferably in the form of an openable container comprised of halves or parts hinged together. Preferably, the container is tapered or narrowed at the bottom to facilitate having it close to the scalp and it is provided with means for sealingly engaging the hair or lock at that point. Also, the container is provided with a sealing top or cover which is closed on the container with the hair enclosed therein during the bleaching.

It is possible that the appliance of the invention may be constructed in various shapes and configurations, preferred forms of which will be described in detail hereinafter.

The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved method and appliance for bleaching hair and performing related techniques.

Another object of the invention is to provide means for more effectively and more quickly bleaching hair by way of openable containers which can be closed to entrap locks or strands of hair therein in a position close to the scalp so that bleach can be applied to the hair while in the containers, the containers having tops or covers to completely enclose the contents for a period of time while bleaching.

Another object of the invention is to provide containers as in the foregoing comprising hinged halves and'configurated to have a tapered or narrow bottom part having sealing members to sealingly engage or grip strands or locks of hair, the container having a sealing top or cover to enclose the hair while bleaching.

Another object of the invention is to provide containers as in the foregoing object having configurations adapted to facilitate placing them :closely adjacent the scalp in the manner of hair curlers and to facilitate the enclosing and bleaching of hair therewithin.

Further objects and additional advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detail description and annexed drawings, wherein:

Referring now more in detail to the various figures of the drawings, the appliance as shown in FIG. 1 comprises a generally cylindrical container 10 which is shown by way of example in substantially full size. The container comprises two

halves

11 and 12 as shown in FIG. 1 which are hinged together by way of a piano-type hinge as shown at 14. The halves fit together so as toseal the contents when the container is closed.

20 and 21. Along each of these edges, there is provided a groove within which is received a strip or rib of sponge rubber which strips come together when the container is closed to seal it and to grip and hold the hair which is held within the container as will be described and as shown in FIG. 1.

At the upper part of the container, it has an annular flange or rib 23 forming a square angular shoulder 24. Near the top there is formed a second square annular shoulder 26 adjacent an annular flange 28 at the top, the upper edge of which tapers to a knife edge. The entire container may be made of any suitable material, preferably a plastic material and this may be any of the modern and well known plastic materials, many of which are flexible and resilient. Numeral 30 designates a top or cover for the container having a downwardly extending peripheral flange 31 which is of a size to fit around that diameter of the container adjacent the square shoulder 26 with the bottom part of the flange 31 seating on the square shoulder 24 as shown in FIG. 3. Preferably, the

top 30 is attached to the container by an integral strip.

32 of flexible material of which the container and top are made. One end of the strip 32 is joined to the top 30 as shown and the other end to the lower part of the rib 23 as seen in FIG. 3. The strip 32 forms an integral hinge for the top 30.

The top 30 has an extending perforated tab 35 which is used for the purpose of attaching the appliance to the hair of the scalp by means of hair pins or the like.

The half 12 has a rib or flange 37 extending along the edge thereof opposite the hinge. The half 11 has a curved clip part 38 extending along the edge thereof opposite the hinge and this curved part may clip over the flange 37 as shown in FIG. 4 for holding the halves of the container in closed position. The top fits down snugly over the rib at the shoulder 26 to hold it in closed position.

In the use of the appliance, it is opened as shown in FIG. 2. The two halves are enclosed on a lock or group of strands of hair in a position close to the scalp as shown in FIG. 1. That hair is then within the container and may protrude from the top thereof. The enclosed or entrapped (hair is then treated with the bleach and this may be by way of a swab, for example. The hair within the container is out of contact with any other hair of the user's head and thus the appliance is ideally adapted for use where a streak of bleached hair is the desired result. The application of the bleach within the container does not contaminate any of the rest of the hair of the users head nor touch it or tint it. The particular configuration of the container shown in the drawings adapts it for being positioned close to the scalp as shown in FIG. 1 and of course a number of containers may be used similar to the use of hair curlers. After application of the bleach, the hair is then tucked down into the container and the cover or lid closed. The container is left closed for a prescribed period of time as necessary to effect the desired degree of bleaching. It has been found that the bleach acts three or four times as fast by this treatment or method and the temperature of the hair is elevated as it is treated and confined in the container. After the bleach has been completed for a particular lock or group of hair strands, the container is opened and except for treating the roots of the hair close to the scalp, the job is completed. Such hair portions are readily bleached in a very relatively short time as explained in the foregoing.

FIGS. 5 and 6 of the drawings show a slightly modified form of the invention. In these figures, numeral 40 designates a container, the upper part of which is rectangular in configuration having flat side and end walls. It is formed in two

'Ilhese edges are similarly provided each with a groove and a strip or rib of sponge rubber, for example, in the grooves which strips come together to seal and grasp and hold the lock or strands of hair when the container is closed.

A top 50 of rectangular configuration is provided as shown in FIG. 5. Around the lower periphery of the top, it is provided with a downwardly extending and outwardly spaced flange 51 which fits snugly around the continuous flange formed by the

47 and 48.

The half 45 of the container has a flange or rib 37 along the edge opposite the hinge corresponding to this flange or rib in the previous embodiment. The half 41 is provided with a curved clip part 38 corresponding to the same clip of the previous embodiment. When the halves are closed, they are held together, that is clipped together, in the same manner as the previous embodiment. The top may then be placed on the container as described in connection with FIG. 5. The hair or a lock of hair or strands of hair may be held in the container in the same manner as described in connection with the previous embodiment. The container may be made in the preferred shapes disclosed or it of course may be made in other shapes or configurations. As described herein, the container is made small enough so that a number of them can be used in the manner of curlers. Preferably, the containers are made as described so that they can be positioned close to the scalp and relatively close together if desired. The hair is held firmly within them and fully enclosed and entrapped during the bleaching.

From the foregoing, those skilled in the art will observe that the invention provides an appliance which realizes and achieves the objects stated in the foregoing.

1 An appliance is provided whereby the bleaching of hair and related techniques can be accomplished more effectively, more simply and more quickly. The appliance of the invention is one which is safe, easy and economical to use and is inexpensive to fabricate and does not require maintenance. The device or appliance is one that can be used effectively by individuals or similarly it can be used in beauty shops or similar establishments.

' The foregoing disclosure is representative of preferred forms of the invention and is to be interpreted in an illustrative rather than a limiting sense, the invention to be accorded the full scope of the claims appended hereto.

What is claimed is:

1. An appliance for treating hair comprising means forming an openable closed container, said container hav' ing two parts hinged to each other and configurated to close upon and hold a lock of hair with the hair within the container, means forming a cover for the container hinged to one of said parts and forming a top whereby to enclose and entrap the hair therein, said two parts being tapered adjacent the bottom of the container to form a relatively narrow configuration adjacent to the head, the parts having sealing means adjacent to the hair that is closed upon to prevent the escape of treating liquid, the container being shaped to extend outwardly away from the hair that is held by the tapered parts, and the interior of the container being open and obstructed whereby bleach may be applied to hair within the container by means of a swab Without contacting other hair and the swabbed hair then tucked into the container and the cover closed.

2. An appliance as in claim 1 wherein the container comprises an upper cylindrical section formed by the parts connected to the lower tapering portions and the lower tapering portions terminating along straight lines which form edges which come together when the container is closed.

3. An appliance as in claim 1 wherein the upper parts of the container are of rectangular configuration connected to the lower tapering portions with the hair holding parts being formed along the lower edges of the tapering parts.

Claims

1. AN APPLIANCE FOR TREATING HAIR COMPRISING MEANS FORMING AN OPENABLE CLOSED CONTAINER, SAID CONTAINER HAVING TWO PARTS HINGED TO EACH OTHER AND CONFIGURATED TO CLOSE UPON AND HOLD A LOCK OF HAIR WITH THE HAIR WITHIN THE CONTAINER, MEANS FORMING A COVER FOR THE CONTAINER HINGED TO ONE OF SAID PARTS AND FORMING A TOP WHEREBY TO ENCLOSE AND ENTRAP THE HAIR THEREIN, SAID TWO PARTS BEING TAPERED ADJACENT THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER TO FORM A RELATIVELY NARROW CONFIGURATION ADJACENT TO THE HEAD, THE PARTS HAVING SEALING MEANS ADJACENT TO THE HAIR THAT IS CLOSED UPON TO PREVENT THE ESCAPE OF TREATING LIQUID, THE CONTAINER BEING SHAPED TO EXTEND OUTWARDLY AWAY FROM THE HAIR THAT IS HELD BY THE TAPERED PARTS, AND THE INTERIOR OF THE CONTAINER BEING OPEN AND OBSTRUCTED WHEREBY BLEACH MAY BE APPLIED TO HAIR WITHIN THE CONTAINER BY MEANS OF A SWAB WITHOUT CONTACTING OTHER HAIR AND THE SWABBED HAIR THEN TUCKED INTO THE CONTAINER AND THE COVER CLOSED.
