SAFETY nazon. i
To all whom tm/17,1 concern.'
Be it known that LMICHAEL CROUGH.` a citizen of the I TnitedStates, residing at llion, in thecounty ofjHerkim'er' and `-State ofNew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Razors, of
cleaned and maintained' in a sanitary condition. Y.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide'afrazor the working vportio'n'of which 'is of suiliciently narrow widthto adapt it to bev employed for shaving .portions 'of the face Vwhich are difficult or impossibleto reach kwith safety razors of ordinary construction.l Y
Still anothenobject offthe invention'is to providea razor which'jy will permit of the use of blades which may be` 'continuous ly sharpened and used funtil'wornont.
claimed, reference ybeinghad to the With these and other objects in view,.the invention consists ofthe features ofcon struction, combination and arrangement ofV hereinafterr fully described land accomparts,
panying drawing. in which Fignrel is a perspective-view of a safety razor embodying my invention-` Figiire 2 is accentral lvertical'transverse section through thesamel z Figure 3 isa longitudinal section on the line 3 3 of 4Figure 2. Y
Figure 4 yis a fragmentary perspective view of the comb plate. Y. In the practical embodiment of my invention` I provide avsafety' razor comprising a l handle l having at one end, a milledorfsen .opposite end a comb plate 3. plate 3 extends atf-anV oblique angle to the i .be `comparatively narrow orl` of restricted Awidt ,h. fbut the rear portions thereof. in rear rated. grip portion 2 and carrying at' its This comb end of the handle to which it is applied and is suitably secured to the handle, as providing said comb-,plate with an opening Vreceiving areduced portion of the handle u which is upset or riveted thereto, as indi.- cated at 4, lwhereby said parts are firmly fastened together The -fasteningconnec- Vtion 4 is arranged at afpointvbetwe'en the longitudinal center of ,the'combplate and its rear edge, the major portion `of the comb applicati@ aia May 24, 1923. serial No. 'e4 1,122.
' plate thus extendingy forwardly "and at anv outward vand downward substantially, obf lique angle: tothe plane of the handle;
` The, forward edge'of thecomb plate is slotted to 'providef the1 'spaced comb-'teeth having the downturned-guard fingers 6, and'- thelnpper surface. of said plate is designed'` to yserve as aseat support for the razor blade. 7. This blade 7 is designedtorest flatly upon the comb plate andhas' its upper and lower faces beveled atl its forward? portion'to form a cuttingedge Sidesiicg'ned.,A whenthe vblade is applied for use, "to extend over. the comb teeth and'the'jspaces between the' same' for cooperation therewithf'in the The comb plate 3 is providedl at" its opposite ends with` inturned a'nges'Q which extend inwardly short Hrdistance and over# lie the vupper surface of said comb plate; These"l Hangesf'serve as',` blade retainers, adapted to overlie the-end' edges ofthe blade,
and forming grooves l0 between the 'same' the body ofgthe'comb plate to receive such end edges of theblade. 'i These'grooves are open at their, upper or rear ends, inline withthe'rear edge'A of the combplatefto 'i adapt vthe blade to l:be `slidablyy inserted and removed and are'closed at. theinloweror forward ends'fto limit'the'lforward movementof the blade and to' prevent it from sliding forwardly beyond a proper-'working position.y vTo this end the forward portions of the flanges9 are bent downwardly against thefupper'face ofthe comb' plate 3, as in* dicated at 11,. forming'stops against which the extremities ofthe cutting-edge of the blade'may bear to arrest the forward sliding movement of said bladleiwhen the "cutting edge is in accurate cutting position andre# llationto the comb teeth The said downbent portions 1L of the flanges 9 are prefer'- Vably curved so ras tov form auxiliary guard portions adapted to'run easily over the face of the user'in the operationof the razor.
The forward portions of the kflanges 9 may ofthe central longitudinal line of the Acomb platefare. widened as indicatedat 12, so 'as to provide"abutmentw shoulders'l in the length vrof the flanges? These abutment l shoulders are adapted to be engaged by the 'end portions of the rear edge of a'clamping plate 14, employed to clamp lthej cutting edge gf the' blade 7 nnly downagansttiie coi-nb the plate,
A edges plate 3 and to `hold said blade against any possibility of recession or rearward displacement. This clamping plateY 14 is of oblong rectangular form and its endv edges are designed to bear against the sides of the narrower front portions of the flanges 9 and the forward edge of the upper surface of said clamping plate is beveled, as indicated at 15, sof as to form a guard or guide surface immediately in rear of the'cutting edge of which guide or guard surface will also ride smoothly over the face of the user inv shaving and permit of the smooth and easy operation of the' device in its shaving action. Y j y The clamping plate 14 is made of spring' metal and is provided with a central shank 16 which extends rearwardly over the blade and comb plate and'has a hooked portion 17 to extend around and under the rea-r of the blade and comb'plate and in proximity to the rear surfaceof the handle 1. This hookedv portion` 17 terminates in a transversely curved latch member 18 having a forwardly pr-ojecting locking tongue 191to engage a locking recess 20 in the rear side-of the handle whereby the clamping lock intoV the locking recess 20, the cla-mp plate isV adapted to be drawn vagainst the shoulders 9 and engaged with the handle to secure said clamping plate in clamping position.-
. The forward portion of lthe body Vof :the clampingplate having the beveledY surface 15 isdepressed withrelation to thebody portion ofsaid plate,
portion will bear against the blade 7 adjacent to thefcutting edge of the latter, while the body portion'of-the plate 14A-rand its shank 16 will lie above and in spaced relation to the blade, as particularly shown in Figure 2; By this :means the rear ed-ge'of the plate 161 may be engaged with the shoulders 13 and 'the shank 16 and hooked portion 17 thereof depressed to draw the blade against said shoulders'13 and at the same time cause the spring tongues-19 to snap ing'plate thus being held under spring tensiona-nd in locking engagement with the shoulders 13 and recess 20 to maintain said plate and 'the blade firmly in working position.- By, however, exerting pressure upon i the hooked portion 1.7, the-.tongue 19 may be depressedout of locking engagement with Vthe recess 20, allowing the Lclamping plate to be released and lifted off in yan easy and convenient manner to permit of ythe adjustment or removali of the fblade or cleansing "of the parts in a, thoroughly'sanitary man- `ner as occasion-requires in the use of the razor. y s
- 'Inpractice` vthe comb plate is made comnarrow and setat such an angle as to admit of the use of a comparatively narrow blade, the angular arrangement of line, the clamping so that said forward the comb plate 3 and ofthe blade, vand their narrow width, adapting the razor to be used face may be reached and readily ,shavedi The mode of retaining the blade in position also adapts the blade to be continu-V ously sharpened and used until narrowed to such a degree may be discarded as worthless. sults from thefact that the grooves 10 will firmly retain the edges of the blade, while the clamping portion of the clamping plate is setto engage arestricted portion ofthe blade immediately successive sharpenings until it is `vevry'n'argk row without impair'ing the plate clamp-ing action. In practice the distance betweenthe by repeated sharpening that it e .This Te- A 'in rear of its [cutting redge, allowing theblade to vbe reduced by' inner sidewalls of the` grOOVG 10 .may "l slightly exceed be usedfallowingvtheblad'euto be adjusted or setat a slight angle. Thisjjpermits an adjustment Aof the bladeso the length ofthe bladerto that its cutting Y v edge may-be brought into propenworking alinement along the comb 'surface' of comb plate at not be sharpened in anaccurate longitudinal otherwise loosely held' blade against any posiV sibility of displacement. Y A ,Y v Y j The mode of use of Athe razor will,it is times when, lin a honing or f. .sharpening action, the edge ofthe blade may plate. emilyy heldingjuie thoughtfbe readily` understood from f the v foregoing description, that the invention provides agsimple type of razor including blade supporting and clamping means which Vmaybe manufactured at and it will be seen "i acomparatively low cost, and which `prov vides for the secure holding of a blade under Y all conditions and thereadyandl easy assemblage ofM the parts for .use andtheir disassemblage Y for or other purposes. the construction very narrow width to be inserted' for yuse andclamped in position, so that 'a ,bladevof initially greater width may be continuously sharpened, and sharpeningv to a economy in the use of the blades.
s Having thus fully described my invention, I claim A safety razor ing a lockingrecess'.` a comb plate carried by the handle and provided with linturned flanges at its'side edges forming retaining grooves to slidably` receive the end edgesof a razor blade, said flanges having widenedY storagetrepairs, cleaning j Also twill be Seen that p e described adapts a blade of used -until reduced I material degree, ensuring v cc'im'prising a handle havi portions formingfinwardly extending shoulders, s spring metal eiampiiig plate having a rear portion normally lying out of contact with the blade and movable toward and from the same and-adapted to bear at its rear edge against said shoulders, said plate 5 havingr a down bent or relatively depressed forward portion to engage the blade in rear of the cutting edge of the latter, and a central shank carried by said rear portion of the blade and curved to extend around the rear edges of the blade and comb plate and 10 beneath the same and having a terminal locking tongue to interlock With said recess in the handle.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature.
