Description

0. F. GARVEY.
Buot-Stretchers.
No.149,463. PatemedApra|7,1874.
WITNESSES. INVENTUR.
l i l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OWEN F. GARVEY, OF PAWTUOKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF'HIS RIGHT TO JAMES BEBNEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,463, dated April 7, 1874 application filed February 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OWEN F. GARVEY, of
Pawtucket, in the State of Rhode Island, have Ais a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure l is a side view of my improved stretcher. Fig. 2 is a section of same.
The object of my invention is to produce a boot-stretcher which is capable of stretching both the instep and toe ofthe boot without re moving it therefrom; and consists in the dcvice for that purpose, hereinafter described.
With my invention I not only stretch the instep in the usual manner, but the toe also, by raising perpendicularly, both operations being performed by means of the single device, which I will now proceed to describe.
A, Figs. l and 2, is a last-shaped stretcher, which is formed in two parts, B and C, made hollow, and connected or hinged together near the center, as shown in Fig. 2, by a slotted upright, c c', on the lower part C, and an arm or projection, b, on the upper portion B; b being a pin passed through the slot c', so as to hold the parts together, yet permit of the motions described. At the heel is a screw, D7 ex tending through the top B, and having its lower end secured in the bottom C, in such a manner as not to interfere with its revolution. I secure the screw D to the bottom G by constructing the former with an annular lip, E, upon its lower end, which rests beneath two parallel lips, F F.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The stretcher is placed in the boot with both parts thereof in a horizontal position, or as near as may be. If it is desired to stretch the instep, the screw D is so turned as to raise the top B at the heel, as shown in Fig. 2. If, however, it is desired to stretch the boot at the toe, the screw D is turned in an opposite direction, which brings the top B and the bottom G together at the heel, which .forces them apart at the toe, and stretches theboot in that part by raising the leather up, and not spreading it sidewise, as is now done.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described boot-stretcher, consisting of the parts B and C, having the slotted upright c c and projection b and pinI b', arranged for operation by means of the screw D, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
OWEN F. GARVEY.
