Wrenches, of which the followingis a speci-` ication.
This invention relates to improvements ink wrenches and has for an object the provision of a ratchet-operated socket wrench having a plurality of socket members of dii-ferent` sizes telescopically nested and arranged so that any one of the members may be readily brought into use without previous adjustment, the said members being secured to and forming a part of the wrench, so as to prevent loss or misplacement.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure l is a plan view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view with the socket membersnested;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view showing the intermediate socket member in use;y Fig. 5 1s a similar view showing the out-` er socket member in use;
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the outer socket member; l
Fig. 7 is a similar View of theintermediate socket member; and y Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view through the head of the wrench, the section being taken at right angles to Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings, where- 1 in like characters of reference denote cor-y,
responding parts, the wrench is shown `as comprising a handle 10, one end of which is constructed to providek a `hand hold or grip, while the opposite end is bifurcated to provide spaced plates 11 having openings 12 therein. These openings are adapted to receive the head of the wrench in a manner to permit of rotation of said head and the latter includes a plurality of socket members o'I' different sizes. The number of these socket inembei's may vary, the wrench shown having an outer socket ymember 13,
an inner socket member 14 and an intermediate socket memberv 15. The outer socket member 13 is provided around its periphery with ratchet teeth 16, the said teeth terminating sho-rt of the opposite faces of the member 13 and providing shoulders 17 against which the plates 11 bear. Pivotally mounted between the plates 11 as shown at 18, is a dog 19 which is adapted to engage the teeth 16 and this dog may be swung upon either side of the pivot 18 so as to hold the membery13 against rotation in either direction.
lThe socket members 14 and 15 are' slidably and telescopically `nested and are co-` extensive in .length with the member 13 so that their opposite edges are normally flush with the opposite face of the member 13. In order to limit the sliding movement of the ' socket members 14 and 15, the latter are provided with spaced lugsf20, which are preferably. arranged at the opposite ends of the said members and extend from one longitudinal edge thereof. These lugs are preferably formed by reducing and bevelin'g the edge of the members so as to provide room for diagonally arranged stops 21 which are carried by and extend across the corners of the members 13 and 14. The stops 21' are so positioned as to permit of the members `14 and 15 being extended beyond one face of the member 13 but will prevent them from extending beyond the opposite face of said member 13.` n 1 i When it is desired to usethe innerv member 14, the members are positioned as shown in Fig. 3 of they drawings and the nut or other article upon wvhiich the wrench is k used may be inserted from either face of the wrench. When using the intermediate member 15, the members are arranged as' shown in Fig. 4, the insertion of a hand or other object into the socket member 14 serving to push the member 15 outward and the latter also acts as a stop to limit the degree of insertion of the nut within the socket member 14. When the outer member 13 is used, the
parts are positioned as shown in Figure 5 where both members 14 and 15 are extended beyond one face of the member 13. p
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions `andniinor details of construction, and the right is heresocket member rotatable in one endthereof,l
a ratchet mechanism, a plurality of socket members slidably and telescopically nested Within the outer socket member and having` their ends normally flush With the oppo,l
site faces of said outer socket member, spaced lugs located along o-ne edge of certain of the socket members, and stops extending diagonally of the corner of the other members between the lugs for limiting the slid ing movement of said members in either di' rection.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures.
