Be it known that I, EDWARD H. SoHArr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Upper Montclair, in the county of Essex and State ot' New Jersey,'have invented a new and improved lWriting Appliance, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a writing appliance, and aims to provide a device of this character more particularly adapted for use by shorthand writers.

In connection with court reporting 'and similar work, it is a well Lappreciated tact that considerable diliiculty has been experienced for the reason that words, and in many instances the entire senseof a paragraph is lost, when it becomes necessary for a stenographer to turn a page.

Thus with an ordinary notebook, when the stenographer reaches the bottom of the page, it is necessary to turn the same over. This takes but a second, but it is suiicient for the stenographer to fall behind the dictator, and in many instances a number of words are lost or the stenographer is forced to speed up to such an extent that the out- `lines are' poorly made, and consequently' illegible when transcribing.

With this in mind my present invention aims toprvide a writing appliance which, as aforestated, isprimarily adapted for use in connection with court reporting, and similar work, and by means of which this dificulty will be overcome, in that in use, this appliance will present a fresh writing surface simultaneous with the movement of the operators hand from the bottom ot the sheet to the topthereof.

A further object o my invention is the construction of a device of the character stated by means of which the results aforos' specified may be accomplished, and which will be capable of being manufactured at a nominal figure, the parts being-of such a simple construction and arrangement as to virtually preclude of disarrangement or breakage.

Still other objects of this invention will become apparent in the annexed specification taken in connection with the drawings, which latter illustrate one practical embodin ment thereof, and in which;

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my appliance.

Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 4 4 and in the direction of the arrow indicated` in Figure 5, and

Referring now more particularly to Figure 1 it will be seen that the device preferably includes a base portion 10 from which side walls 11 extend upwardly, these side walls supporting between their upper edges a platen 18 having odset portions at each side slightly raised above a writing surface 12 extending throughout the entire length of a platen 13. Said platen is connected to the side walls 11 adjacent one of its ends by hinged portions 14, and adjacent its opposite edge by a fastening portion 15, and has a pivlotal movement longitudinally of said side wa ls.

Thus as has been indicated in Figure a in dotted lines. the platen 13 may be swung upwardly so that access may be had into the interior or the appliance for a purpose hereinafter specified. Now assuming that the interconnected plies et paper 16 are disposed within the interior aforementioned, as in F igure 5, it will be appreciated that the outermost portion 17 of said paper may be brought around the inner edge of the platen 13, to a position at which it lies upon the writing surface 12, between said oiiset portions, the outer end of said paper resting upon a roller 18 with which it is preferably forced, into intimate engagement by means of a spring pressed roller 19 bearing against its upper surface.

However, as has been shown in Figure 5, the outer end of the paper 17 .preferably passes through a slot in the outer .wall 20 of the appliance, and assuming that the roller 18 is revolved it will be appreciated that the paper will befed from within the appliance over the platen 13, and thus through the slot in the outer wall 20. iVith a view or accomplishing this actuation ot the roller 18, l preferably utilize an endless flexible member 21, which in the embodiment illustrated is in the nature of a chain passing around sprocket wheels 22 and 23, the latter being xedly secured to the shaft of the roller 18. Thus it will be understood that no time will be iost in the turning of a leaf, in th'at v it is necessary yin any instance for a'shorthand writer to move his hand outwardly, if

for no other reason than for the purpose ofl avoiding cramping.l of his hand, and this movement will as aforedescribed, result in the presenting of a fresh sheet of paper, thus accomplishing both of these operations simultaneously, and reducing delay to a minimum. l

4. A writing appliance including a body portion, a platen carried thereby, means at one end of said platen for feeding writing material therefrom, an endless element supported by said body portion for operatin said means, and actuating members secure to said endless element for operating the same.

A writing appliance including a body portion, a platen carried thereby, means at one end of said platen for eedlng Writing material therefrom, an endless element extending longitudinallyof said body portion for operating said means, and actuating members secured to said endless element for operating the same.

6. A Writing appliance including a platen presenting a supporting surface adapted to receive a strip of writin material, an endless element for moving sai strip over said surface, and actuating means for said endless element connected thereto and having a movement only in the direction of movement of said element.
