TYPEWRITER DESK.
Applica-tion led Qctober 11, 1922. Serial No. 593,750.
To all lwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that T, JOHN ARTHUR HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriter Desks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to typewriter desks of combination form including means for supporting an adding machine in connection with the typewriter whereby both machines may be used at the same time by separate operators, and provision is made for the ystorage of papers em# ployed in connection with the typewriter and adding machine.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a typewriter deskv and adding machine support comprising a stand, a table that raises and lowersl and two trays that operate in conjunction with the table so that when the table is raised, the two trays are lowered at the two sides of the table.
The purpose of the device is that it may be used as a bookkeeping desk with a typewriter on one end of the table and with an adding machine at the other end thereof and capable of carrying loose leaf ledger sheets or other records in the two trays, whereby two persons may work at one table and at the same time, one working at each v end, and when the work is finished, then the device may be closed up, the table going down and the two trays coming up so as to be locked and then pushed into a vault, whereby to secure the safety of the records.
The table may be made to carry a typewriter and a hand operated adding machine or may be made *to carry motor driven machines.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this speciiication, with the understanding that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but may be changed and modiied so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
`In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view, with some parts broken away, showing the combined desk and support in the extended position,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with some parts in section, showing the table and desk extended. l p
' Fig. 3 is a side elevationshowing the combined desk and table collapsed and elevated ready for storage in a vault,
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevation and section of one half of the collapsed structure,
Fig. 5 is an elevation and section taken at right angles to Fig. 4,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section and elevation of one end of the extended table,
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of the table in the extended position,
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary section of a portionof the table.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a rectangular frame 1 including channel iron legs or uprights 2 joined at the top by cross pieces 3 which are connected by other cross pieces 4 near the bottom ends andthe lower ends of the legs 2 terminate in castors 5, the parts being rigidly connectedl for storage in a vault or other receptacle. f f
The top of the table is occupied by a work supporting member 6 and the legs are joined by rods 7 and by bars 8 which bars terminate in angle members 9 dropping into the upper ends of the legs 2, the bars 9 carrying rollers 10 at the upper and lower ends thereof.
At each end of the bar 8 is connected by Va pin 11 to one end of any anglelever 12 terminatingl at the end remote from the pin 11 in a handle 13 and also provided with a short arm 14 connected by a pin 15 to an intermediate portion of another lever 16 in turn connected at the end remote from the pin 7 with a cross rod 17 through the intermediary of a rocker arm 18 carried by the cross arm 17. There are two rocker arms 18 on opposite sides of the frame and these rocker arms are connected by respective links 19 at opposite ends so as to compel united movement of the levers 16 and the parts connected thereto. n
Each lever 12 is connected by a pin or pivot 2O to the corresponding end of a casing or carrier 21 supported by the levers 12 exterior to the carrier 2:1 and by pairs of parallel links 22 within` the carriers .21.
K. he `carriers 21 support the angle links 23 exterior to the Carriers 2l and the angle links 23 are arranged in pairs to each carrier 21 at opposite ends thereof with one end of each link 23 supported by ak lug 241, a cover member 25 for a respective carrier 21 and constituting a cover therefor which when open forms a shelf for books, papers, etc.
The inner side wall 27 of each container 21, there being two such containers on opposite sides of the machine, is connected to containers 21 and lids 25, by two links 22, one above the other, and one of these links 22 is connected by a broken elongated link 26 with the cover member 25 of the respective container 21, the arrangement being such that the cover member 25 and the side wall 27 are moved under the action of the links 22, 23 and26, and when the cover member 25 is moved into and out of covering relation with the container 21, the member 27 is by the same operation reciprocated, the member 27 forming the inner wall of the containers 21.
When the parts are in the closed posit-ion ready for storage in a vault or other receptacle, said yparts having the appearance shown in Fig. 3, `the receptacles 21 being brought into close adjusted position over the frame of the structure with the receptacles 21 housed by the cover members 25 and 27 and the various levers located within the borders of the frame v1.
Now by grasping either of the handles 13 the levers 12 and parts connected therewith are moved away from the center of the structure to the position shown in Fig. 2.
kThe movement imparted to the levers 12 by the manipulation of the handles 13 causes the 'rocking of the levers 12 and 16 to the positions shown in Fig. 2, thus separating the receptacles 21 yand establishing them on opposite sides of the frame 1.
Then the two containers or trays 21 are separated, the act-ion is to lower these trays alongside of the main frame 1 and raise the table 6, bearing typewriters, etc., to top of stand, the containers being for the reception of loose leaf ledger sheets or other records and the tables 6, carrying a typewriter or adding machine on each end whereby two people may operate at the same desk at the same time.
lWhen it is desired to store the machine and its contents, the handles 13 are actuated, causing a lifting of the trays or containers 21 with their contents and the deposition of these trays without disturbing their relation to the structure on top of the table 1 with the covers 25 replaced incovering relation thereto above the table 1, 'all as shown in Fig. S of the drawing, whereuponr the various parts may be locked in position enclosing the loose leaf papers or other documents and the whole structure being movedinto a vault for safe keeping, whereby tol insure the safety of the records.
Of course, it will be understood that the adding machine structure may be of a motor driven type or may be of the hand driven type with the machines, when in use, being suspended and lowered into convenientposi tion for manipulation.
lVhat is claimed is 1 ln al typewriter desk. a movable snpport for a typewriter. filing sections arranged for movement directly over and to opposite sides of the desk, and means constructed and arranged for connection with the movable support and filing section for synchronous ,operation thereof whereby on movement of the filing sections to position over the desk the platform will be lowered and on reverse movement of the filing sections said platform will be raised.
