Description

J. KIMBALL.
Hand and Foot Powers.
Patented April 7,1874.

- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. KIMBALL, OF NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS.
. IMPROVEMENT IN HAND AND FOOT POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,406, dated April 7, 1874; application filed October 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. KIMBALL, of Naperville, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand and Foot Power, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved power. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved hand and foot power, which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, effective and reliable in operation, and so constructed as to completely overcome the deadpoint. The invention consists in the combination of the foot-levers, the equal-armed levers, the bent hand-levers, and the connecting-rods with the cranks attached to the ends of the shaft to be driven, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the frame-work of the power, which may be a part of the frame-work of the machine to be driven. B are two levers, connected toeach other by a cross-bar, C, so that they may move togther, and which are pivoted to supports attached to the base.of the frame A? To the levers B, at equal distances from the pivoting-points of said levers B, are pivoted two foot-levers, D, the ends of the adjaoent edges of which are connected, by short connecting-bars E, with the ends of two short equal-armed levers, F, which are pivoted to the levers B directly over the pivots of the said levers B. To one end of the levers F is pivoted the lower end of the connecting-rod G. The upper ends of the connecting-rods G are pivoted to the ends of the short arms of the bent levers H, which are pivoted at their angles to the frame A, and to which, near their upper ends or handles, are pivoted the ends of the connecting-rods I, the other ends of which are pivoted to the cranks-J, attached to the ends of the shaft K, from which motion is given to the machinery to be driven. To the inner ends of the levers B, which project beyond the edge of the inner foot-lever'D, are pivoted the lower ends of the connecting-rods L, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the cranks J. The connecting-rods I and L are at right angles with each other, so that the cranks J can have no dead-point.
In using the power, the operator places one foot upon one of the foot-levers D, and the other foot upon the other lever D, and with his hands grasps the handles of the levers H. Then, by throwing his weight alternately upon his heels and toes, and, at the same time, alternately pushing and pulling upon thelevers H, a steady and uniform motion will be given to the shaft K, and through. it to the machine to be driven.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the levers B, foot-levers D, short equal-arm ed levers F, connecting-rods Gr, bent hand-levers H, and connecting-rods I and L with the cranks J, attached to the ends of the shaft K to be driven, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN J. KIMBALL.
