Patented April 7,1874.
l H., HrVll H UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
HENRY X. WRIGHT, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES D. WRIGHT, OF BERGEN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTING ATTACHMENTS FOR CLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,366, dated April 7,1874; application filed June 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY X. WEIGHT, of the-city of Memphis, county of Shelby, State of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in Lighting Attachments for Clocks, of which the following is a speciiication:
The object of my invention is to provide for lighting a candle at any time in the night which may be desired.
My invention consist-s in certain details of construction Iirst described, and afterward pointed out in the claim.
In order more fully to describe my invention, I refer to the accompanying d rawin g forming a part of this specitication.
Figure I is a front view of an alarm-clock embodying my invention. Fig. II is a side vier of the same.
A candle-holder, I, is attached to one side of the casing A of an alarm-clock, and projects in front ofthe same to show the time as soon as the candle is lighted. Near the place Where the candle-holder is fastened a vertical spring, K, is placed, having on its upper end a match-holder, N. Near the top of the casing a piece of sand-paper is fastened on a line with the match-holder. Under the sand-paper holder is inserted a pin, It, with an arm, S, against which the spring K is placed, when the lighting attachment is set for operation. Ahorizontal rod, G, passes through the vside of the casing, having on its inner end a shoulder, 7L, which rests against a pin, f,in the disk e on the Winding-post d ot' the alarm. The rod G serves as a trip-shaft to the spring K, and is drawn out by the hand to hold the spring in posit-ion ready for lighting the match. When the alarm strikes, the winding-post of the ala-rm revolves, drawing in the trip-shaft, releasing the spring, Which ignites the match and communicates the iialne t0 the candlewiek. To prevent the spring from beingl thrown beyond the candle, a stop, n, is placed on the side ofthe casing near the pivot of said spring. A guide, T, to direct the forward movement of the spring is placed above and to the rear ofthe pin and arm above mentioned, and against which the spring K rests when placed in position for operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- The elastic wire arm K having coiled matchholder N, in combination with the trip-arm G, opera-ted by disk c, carrying stud j', all arranged in connect-ion with a clock for light-ing a lamp or candle at a determined time, substantially as set forth.
HENRY X. WRIGHT.
