A. J. KECK ATTACHMENT FOR PRINTING PRESSES I Filed July 10 \922 QKWEZEMEMEIZIEIZIIZMEIPZ INVEN TOR A47 KECK. BY M M A TTQRNEIYb ALBERT J. KECK, or s1. PAUL, MINNEsoTA. q
ATTACHMENT FOE PRINTING PRESSES.
Application filed July 10, 1922. Serial No. 573,792.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. Knox, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Printing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for printing presses, and an object is to provide an attachment which may be used to spray different colors on newspapers or other printed matter in addition to the usual letters produced on the printed matter while passing through the press. My invention may be employed to produce attractive borders on the printed matter or to tint the printed newspaper with any desired color in the nature of a background, or to produce certain letters in color so as to make an attractive display of a firm name or headline, and it may be also used to color the letters after they have been printed on the paper with ink by the customary printing roller.
The full objects of my invention will appear in connectionwith the detailed description, and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form in which the invention may be employed, Fig. 1 is a viewin longitudinal section showing the attachment ap plied to a printing roller. Fig. 2 is a View in section on theline 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a View in section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the attachment.
In the invention as shown in. the drawings, a printing roller 41 is provided with a separate plate 42 having thereon the desired name or headline, the letters of which are provided with perforations 44. A casing 46 is secured to the side of the hollow roller 41 and this casing extends into the roller and has its inner end closed. The portion of this casing underneath the plate 42 is provided with a plurality of perforations 48 and the outer portion of the casing is flared outwardly to constitute a Venturi tube 50. A slot or opening 52 extends through the side wall of the printing roller and leads into the Venturi tube 50. A pipe 54 secured to the frame of the press has its end formed to make a tight joint against the outer surface of the side wall of the printing roller as shown in Fig. 3 and while fitting tightly against the side wall does not prevent rotation of the roller. When the plate 42 comes into engagement with the impression roller, the opening 52 on account of rotation of the printing roller comes into registry with the pipe 54, thus providing a passageway into the Venturi tube 50 and printing surface, means for causing coloring material to be discharged from the interior of said roller through said perforations when said roller is in printing position, and means for cutting off the supply of coloring material for the other positions of said roller.
2. In a printing press, the combination of a printing roller having perforations in its printing surface, means for causing coloring material to be discharged from the interior of said roller through said perforations when said roller is in printing position, and means controlled by the rotation of said roller for cutting off the supply of coloring material for the other positions of said roller.
3. In a printing press, the combination of a printing roller having perforations in its printing surface, one end of said roller having an opening leading to the interior of the roller, and a pipe for supplying coloring material under pressure, the inner end of said pipe fitting tightly against said end of the roller and registering with said opening when the roller is in printing position.
4. In a printing press, the combination of a printing roller having perforations in its printing surface, a tube secured within the interior of said roller, said tube having perforations adapted to discharge toward the perforations in the printing surface and vone end of said roller having an opening 5 leading into said tube, and a pipe for supplying coloring material under pressure, the inner end of said pipe fitting tightly against said end of the roller and registering With said opening when the roller is in printing position. y
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
ALBERT VJ. KECK.
