HENRY LAMBRECI-IT, OF MILWAUKEE,.WISCO'NSIN.
DETAGHABLE HANDLE FOR CHINA 0R GLASS CUPS. 7
Application filed July 15,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LAMBREGHT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles for China or Glass Cups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to detachable handles for cups, and its primary object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character, which is applicableto china or glass cups, either manufactured without a handle, or in which the handle has become accidentally broken off.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the ap pended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed accordingto the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a cup illustrating the invention attached thereto, parts being broken away and in section to more clearly illustrate the invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the same in elevation.
Figure 3 is an elevation view of a modified form of the invention, with parts broken away and in section.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a china or glass cup of any conventional design, the usual handle being eliminated. The present invention, which is designed to serve the purpose of the customary handle either in cases where the cup is manufactured without the same, or where the handle has become accidentally broken off, comprises an annular ring 2 adapted to receive the bottom of the cup 1 and engage the sides thereof. Extending upwardly from opposite sides of the ring 2 are a pair of handles 3, which are designed to follow the contour of the cup to a point approxi- 1922. Serial No. 575,414.
mately central of the height, from which they flare outwardly to form gripping loops l, which loops are provided, at their ends, with a hook 5 engaging the lip of the cup at opposite sides.
In the preferred form of my invention, I propose to stamp or form the same from a single blank of resilient material, whereby the ends of the loops 4, which engage the lip of the cup, would tend to releasably lock the device on the cup. It is also obvious that while I have shown the invention of a plain or simple design, the same can be made up in ornamental shapes and of various finishes where so desired.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figure 3, I have illustrated a method of forming the invention from wire of any suitable gauge, and in this form it will be noted that I employ a single handle 6 formed by twisting the ends of a pair of wires 7 that form the annular ring 2 adapted to receive the bottom of the cup 1. The opposite ends of the wires 7 are twisted together to form a connection and one of the wires is extended upwardly along the side of the cup to form a retaining hook 8, which engages the lip of the cup at opposite sides from the handle 6. i
It will also be observed that one of the gripping loops 4, in the preferred form of my invention, may be eliminated without departing from the invention, the resulting structure serving to lock the device on the cup in a manner similar to that illustrated in the modified form of the invention.
From the foregoing it will be seen that where the invention is used in connection with a cup, which is manufactured without the customary handle, the cost of the cup is materially reduced, as the forming and attaching, of a china or glass handle is one of the most expensive steps in the manufacturing operation. Further, the present invention eliminates a large portion of breakage, due to the fact that handles formed integral with the cup are very readily broken in shipping and handling.
A further obvious advantage is the saving resulting in the use of the invention upon cups in which the handle has been accidentally broken, whereby continued use of a cup, that would be otherwise discarded, is permitted.
I claim The combination of a cup and a. resilient Q neoasse member having a circular bottom portion upper edge of said cup at a point diametri- 10 adapted to surround the bottom of said cup cally opposed to said first mentioned hook, and having on one side an upwardly eXtendone of said arms being bowed outwardly to ing arm forming a continuation of said botform a handle and a resilient loop.
tom portion and provided with an upper hook In testimony that I claim the foregoing positioned over the edge of said cup, and a I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, 15 second arm extending upwardly from the in the county of Milwaukee and State of opposite side of said bottom portion and Wisconsin.
provided with a hook positioned over the HENRY LAMBRECHT.
