J. J. BOYER ERASER ATTACHMENT FOR TYPEWRITING MACHINES Filed May 6. 19 21 Patented May 6, 1924.
UNITED STATES I JOHN J. BOYER, 0F YQNKERS, NEW YORK.
EBASER ATTACHMENT FO'R TYP RITING MACHINES.
Application filed May a, 1921. Seria1 No. 467,466.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BUYER, a citi zen of the United States, and residing at Yonkers, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Eraser Attachments for Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification, such as will enablethose skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to erasers for use in connection with typewriting machines, and the objectthereofis to provide an improved device of thisclass which is designed to be connected with the machine in such manner that it may always be detached and used whenever necessary and will always therefore be in position for use, and which in addition to serving as an eraser may also be used as a brush for cleaning off the paper after the operation of erasing, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desig nated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a side view of a part of the platen roller of a typewriting machine and showing a knob or handle by which it may be turned by hand and also showing my improved attachment connected with said knob or handle;
Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the attachment in section; and,
Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a the platen roller of a typewriting machine, and said roller is provided with the usual knob or head a by which it may be turned by hand in the usual manner. In the practice of my invention, I provide a combined eraser and brush device I) which is composed of rubber or other suitable erasive material, and which comprises an oblong body portion 6 having an enlarged circular head 6 which is provided with a cavity, recess or socket b, which is adapted to be passed on over the handle of the roller a formed. by the knob or head a and the socket b in the head If of the attachment is so formed that said, attachment, or the head 6 thereof, can be forced on over the part a and will remain connected with said part by adhesion. 'In'the operation of the machine, it may be detached and used for the purpose set out whenever so required, but when attached it serves'as a handle-for turning the roller a. I
The central part-l5 of the attachmentis approximately cylindrical in cross section and is provided with longitudinal wing members or blades 6 preferablybeveled at their edges as shown in the drawing, and the end of the bodyportion ofthe attachment opposite the head 6 thereof is preferably tapered as shown at b and provided with a socket b in which is secured a brush or brush member 6 composed of any suitable material.
The head portion 6 of the attachment is provided, in the construction shown, with annular grooves and corresponding annular rib portions 6 which break up or divide the surface of said part 6 and thus render it more eflicient in use as an eraser, but this object may also be accomplished by otherwise roughening, dividing or serrating the surface of the part 6 The blades 6 may be so formed as to serve as erasers or scrapers, and my improved'attachment may be so made or finished as to facilitate its use, or adapt it for use, both as a pencil and ink eraser, and after the erasing has been accomplished, the brush 6 may be used incleaning off the paper, an opera-' tion which is always necessary after using the device as an eraser.
My invention is not limited to the use of any particular material in forming my improved attachment, nor to the details of construction herein shown and described, and
changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing its ad vantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Leting a socket adapted to receive said knob or i handle and having a circumferential erasive surface, the body portion of the attachment being also provided with longitudinal erasive blades.
2. A supplemental roller handle for typewriting machines, said handle being adapted to be detachably connected with the knob or handle of the platen roller and being provided at one end with a head member having a socket adapted to receive said knob or handle and having an erasive surface, the body portion of the attachment being also provided with longitudinal erasive blades and the end thereof opposite the head portion being conical in form.
3. A supplemental roller handle for typewriting machines comprising a body portion having a plurality of longitudinally arranged erasive blades, one end of said body portion being tubular in form and provided with circumferentially arranged erasive surfaces and the other end portion being conical in form.
4. A supplemental roller handle for typewriting machines comprising a. body portion having a plurality of longitudinally arranged erasive blades, one end of said body portion being tubular in form and provided with circumferentially arranged erasive surfaces and the other end portion being conical in form.
5. A supplemental roller handle for typewriting machines as described comprising a solid central body portion, a sleeve portion at one end of said body portion, and a solid conical member at the other end of said body portion, and said central body portion being provided with a plurality of projecting eraser members all of said parts being formed integral.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this th day of May, 1921.
