FARM GATE.
Application filed July 19, 1922. Serial No. 575,948.
T 0 aZZ whom: it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MoCAskEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Fayette, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm Gates, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gates and pertains more especially to farm gates of the lifting type.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a gate of the type mentioned which has improved means for hingedly mounting same and for allowing of lifting of the gate and which also has improved means for latching the gate against all vertical movement as well as against all horizontal movement.
The invention further aims to provide latching means for locking the gate in lifted or horizontal position and to also provide novel hinging means which allows the gate when open to be swung to lie flat against the fence. v
The invention further aims to provide gate mounting and latching means of a simple and economical character and which at the same time is positive and efiicient and capable of easy and quick operation.
Further and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a side elevation of the invention;
Figure 2, is a top plan view;
Figure 3, is 'a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4, is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5, is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 1, and
Figure 6, is a detail perspective view of the attaching clip of the brace rod of the gate.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a post 1 is employed which is formed with upper and lower reduced attaching parts 2 of circular cross-section. The gate 3 has its inner end or cross rail et formed with correspondingly shaped pintles 5. Hinges composed of similar complementary members 6 are employed and have semi-circular ends of knuckles of a diameter to snugly fit about the respective reduced ataching parts 2 and pintles Bolts 7 connect intermediate parts of the hinges while bolts 8, act to rigidly secure the hinges to the post 1. As depicted in Figures 2 and 5 of the drawings, the inner or hinged end of the gate is offset to one side of the post 1 and freely swings about the outer ends or knuckles of the hinges, the offsetting allowing the gate when open to lie perfectly flat against the fence. A bearing plate 9 acts to support the pintle 5 to thus sustain the weight of the gate structure.
Clips or stirrups 1O and'll are bolted to the upper inner and lower outer corners of the gate and have flanges 12 and 13 respec' tively which engage against the vertical or cross rails of the gate as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The clips further have perforated parts receiving a diagonal brace rod 14 which latter restricts the extent of lifting of the front end of the gate and is equipped with a turnbuckle 15 to enable adjustment of the extent of lifting movement of the gate. The lifting of the gate is effected by providing the bolts 50 which loosely connect the horizontal rails of the gate to the vertical posts thereof, the bolts permitting necessary movement of the parts.
The latching means include a pair of keepers 16 rigidly secured to and in cutout parts at the top of the fence post 17, the keepers each having a curved top face and a socket 18 at the center of the curved top face, which socket receives the nose 19 of a spring latch 20 that is attached to the upper horizontal rail of the gate by means of a depending inverted U-shaped part 21 and bolt 22. For the purpose of holding the gate against lateral movement, a Ushaped latch 23 is employed the arms of which straddle the end 24 of an intermediate horizontal rail 25 of the gate, the latch 23 being pivoted at 26 to a plate 27 that is secured to the fence post 17, and having a nose 28 which limits downward movement thereof when the gate is in open position.
In order to hold the gate against upward movement a pair of downwardlyfacing keepers 29 are employed and which are attached to the fence post 17 and engaged by a spring latch 30 which latter is secured at 31 to-the clip 11 and has a nose 32 engaging the keeper 29.
By adjustment of turnbuckle 15, the gate and thereby the nose 32 of the latch 30 can be' adjusted tohave efiec-tive latching contact with the keeper 2 9 As shown in Figure 3, the latch 30 is curved or offset so as to have its upper free or outer end extend to one side of the plane ofthe gate.
When the parts occupy the positionof Figure 1, of the drawings latch 20 engages the top or upper keeper 16 and latch 30 the top or upper keeper 29, since the gate is thenin'an.inclinediposition', ire. itsh'oi'i- Zontal'rails are atan incline to the ground. l/Vhen it desiredto latch the gateiiii a 'horizontal position, or withitsrliorizo'ntal rails parallel to the ground, then the latch 26 on gages the lower or'hottoin keeper and the latch 20-engagesfl1e lower or'botto'm keeper 29; For the purpose of further hold ing the gate against lateral'movements at its'hottom, when the gate lS'liOIlZOIliA-l or inleve l position, a keeper 1:6 is m-onnted on a base plate 40 about the ground line the keeper 16 beingsimilarinconstrnc'tion to the keepers- 16, excepting that itssocket is-of a siae to receive the'cli-p 13'.
\Vhat is claimed ism Y 1. ln combination with "a hinged gate having vertical and horizontal rails connected to allow of vertical movement ci /the front end of the gate, a post latchingmeans-carried'by the gate and engagingtheposti to hold'the'tront'end ot the gate against downward movement and being disengageahle from'the post by upward movement theregageable with either of said keepers to hold:
the front endof' the gateagainst downward movement, means-ad went the center of the' front end of the gate to hold tl latter against lateral movements, upper and lower keepers on the post "adjacent the lower end thereof; and latching means on the gate en= gageaole with: either of the last named keepers according :to "the engagement of the first named latching means with its said keepers. I
In testimony whereof I" aflix: my signature.
