Description

Patented Apr. 29, 1924.
I,UNITED .STA-Tas GEORGE s. BARToLD, 0E ROCHESTER, NEW LYORK, AssIGNoRf'ro .LoRHIER- scHANG oo., INC., 0E ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, E coRPoRA'rIoN oF NEw Yoan.
PAPER Box'.
Application led April 10, 1922. Serial No. 550,983.
To all who'rn. 'it may concern.' l l Be it known that I, GEORGE S. lBARTOLD,
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Paper Boxes; Aand I do here yzdeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, this specification, and to the reference nu-V merals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to special receptacles and more particularly to paper boxes of the general type used for face powlso der and like goods, and it ha's for its object to provide a simple,'strong and durable box of attractive appearance so reinforced with metal as to greatly increase its wearing qualities and at the same time assist in its l ornamentation. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations -of parts, all as will be hereinafter more full described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the. end of the specification.
In the drawings: I
-Figure 1 is a side view of a powder box constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a bottom view thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged central section, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section of a corner of the boxas shown in Fi ure 3.
imilar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
In general form the box is of a familiar design with a deeply flanged cover having a rounded top and a cylindrical bottom fitted with an inner collar over which the cover engages sothat the dividing line of the box about the center. In the ractice of my invention I construct the walls of the cover portion A and the body portion B of laminated material in practically the same manner, to wit: a cylindrical paper side wall l forms a lining for and is surrounded by a thin band or hoop 2 of bronze or simllar ornamental metal on the outer face of which 1s secured another paper appears to be at lamination 3 that is preferably pasted to closely adhere and constitute an ornamentalI covering for the exterior. In the case of the body of the box the lower edge of this vforming a part ofA bulged top vto give thea metallic lamination'-2 extendsbeyond. the
paper` layers at 4to be wholly exposed and provide ay gilt -band at vthe lower edge or corner of the box for purposes of ornamentation. This portion 4 isalso rlled inwardly to form a beadas shown that provides a' ledge upon which is. seated a paper disk 5 constituting one end of the box, in this case the bottom. The' margin of this bottomA piece preferably abuts thef metallic band 2 and lies beneath the paper lamination l as shown. The effect of this is not onlyto ornament the box, but it raises the paper with the surface upon which thebox is placed, and in case such surface is damp or liquid -has been spilled thereon, only .the metal bead 4 becomes wet, and Ithis being of course impervious to moisture, the box does not in any degree disintegrate as a result in the manner of boxes made wholly of paper;
Asbefore stated and as the reference numerals show .the cover portion A is constructed in substantially the same manner at least as far as the side walls are concerned. The lower edge 4a of the metal band 2 may be exposed or not at the separating line of the parts, it being exposed in the present embodiment as shown at 4a and arranged to` abut a small doubled edging strip 6 that straddles the top edge of the side wall of the body portion as shown in Figure 3. Theupper or end edge projects-and is beaded at 4b, but it is usually desired in such boxesto make a .rounded or upwardly pearance of the familiar padded top, so w ile I provide -a flat disk 5L for the upper end wall arranged in substantially the same manner as the bottom 5 I interposed between it and its seat on the bead 4" a second outer andv (lished paper top 7 so that the edges of both of these parts of a double end wall are held between the bead4 and the edge of the paper lamination 1. This outer Wall or top has the same ornaf bottom 5 so that it does-not come incontact y v mental facing or covering 3a -as the side the side` Wallprop'er of the' ybody and the cover portion fits over it as shown, and as usual in boxes of this kind. y
I am l'aware that'y boxes of substantially this type 'and' general appearance have been made before Wholly of paper, but by combining paper and metal in the manner I have described, the box is givenA a smoother and more regular appearance; the partsl have greater body land stiffness; the gilt ornamentation-provided by the exposed metal rim has a better nish and is more lasting; it is easy to manufacture and assemble with an accurate lit, and it stands Wear much bet;
ter than a box that is all paper, particularlylthe beads 4 and 4" which, as beforestated, are notdamaged by moisture and save the box from' disintegration at the corners Whichreadily occurs with. a paper box havs ing a rolled edge of any kind.- l i claim as my invention:
LA paper box having incorporated in its side Walls a thin inner sheet of metal, an end edge of which projects beyond the paper of the side Wall and also beyond the edge of the adjoining end Wall'to constitute van ornamental band.
2. A paper box having incorporated in its side Walls athin inner' sheet of metal, an end edge of which projects beyond the paper of the side Wall and also beyond the edge of the adjoining end wall to constitute an ornamental ba'ndfsaid projecting portion being rolled inwardly to form a bead.
3. In a paper box, the combination with a laminated side wall having a thin inner sheet of metal incorporated, therein with its end edge extended v`beyond the paper to constitute an exposed band of metal, of av separate end wall supported by such extended portion. i Y
4. In a paper box, the combination With a laminated side wall having a thin inner sheet of metal incorporated therein with its end edge extended beyond the paper to constitute an exposed band of metal, and rolled inwardly to form a bead, of a separate end wall supported on said bead.
vv'5. A paper box having laminated Side Walls of paper'and metal sheets the metal being innermost, and a paper bottom supported by an extension of the metal sheet upon which extension the box is adapted to rest. i
GEORGE S. BARTOLD.
