UNi'rEn stars CARL A. BORG, OF NEW FLORENCE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FIFTH T0 L. H. LICHTENBERG, OF NEW FLORENCE, MISSOURI.
' BAIL CLAMP.
Application filed May 4, 1923. Serial No. 636,683.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. Bone, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Florence, in the county of Montgomery and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a clamp for the rails of railways, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the ends of the rails are firmly connected in such a manner that they cannot be separated without lifting the rails OK the ties to permit the clamp to be separated from them.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a rail joint showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 3 is a-section on line 33 of Fig ure 1.
Figure 4 is a botton plan view.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 2.
In these views 1 indicates one member of the clamp and 2 the other member. These members are formed to engage the webs and upper faces of the bases of the rails and each member is provided with a groove 3 for receiving the edges of the rail bases. The member 1 is provided with a narrow base 4: upon which the abutting ends of the rails rest. A hook-shaped tongue 5 is formed on the edge of the base and this tongue is adapted to engage the keeper 6 on the member 2. This keeper is of U-shape with its ends connected with the bottom of 60 the member 2, the upper edge of the bight being rounded to fit in the curve of the hook and said bight being provided with a recess 7 for receiving the outer edge of the hook.
Thus the two members are firmly connected together when in position and the weight of the rails will also act to hold the clamp in position upon the ties as well as to hold them in locked position. Member 1 is provided with the lugs 8 for engaging the holes 9 in the other member, these lugs passing through holes in the rails. The holes 9 are provided with inclined lower walls for facilitating the entrance of the lugs thereinto. The two members of the clamp are bolted to the rails by the bolts 10 and notches 11 are formed in the outer edges of the members for receiving the heads of the spikes which connect them with the ties. Member 1 is first put in place and the rails placed on the same. The lugs pass through the holes in the webs of the rails. The member with the rails thereon is then lifted from the ties and the other member is connected with the first member by engaging the hook on the base of the first member with the keeper of the second member. The parts are then lowered in position and fastened together and then spiked to the ties. The clamp can only be removed by lifting it and the rails up off the ties to permit the parts to be separated. It will be seen that the weight of the rails will act to hold the'parts in position so that there is no danger of the rails spreading.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood thatI may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
hat I claim is z A rail joint of the class described comprising a pair of members for engaging the webs and bases of the rail, lugs on the web engaging part of one member and the web rear 0mm. T T
engaging part of the other member having holes therein for receiving the lugs after the same have been passed through holes in the rails, means permitting the members and rails to be bolted together, the outer edges of said members having spike receiving notches therein, a base on one member for receiving the abutting ends of the rails, a hook-shaped tongue on said base and a keeper-on the other member for receiving 1 the tongue.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
