To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATT GnIsAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubois, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel construction of rail joint which is simple in construction, easy to install and thoroughly eflicient in use.
The invention is clearly disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. Briefly described:
Figure 1 is a view in transverse section of a rail and my rail joint in operative position in connection therewith;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of two rails with my rail joint in operative position;
Fig. 4 is a detached detail view in perspective of the clamp member of the rail joint;
Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of said rail clamp, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail view in perspective of the-wedge key. I
Referring now in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a base member adapted to be disposed on top of a railroad tie 2, as shown in Fig. 3. Said base member is provided with a flange 3, adapted to bear against-the top of one of the base flanges 4 of the rail,- road rail 5, and against one of the sides of the web connecting the base flanges of the rail with the top flange, and also against the under surface of one of the top flanges of the rail, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and, 3. Saidbase plate, or member. 1 is also provided. with a marginal longitudinally extending flange 6 having an inner face 7 inclined from the top thereof toward the outer face of said flange.
A clamp member 8 bears against the base flange 4 and against the side of the web 4:
of the rail and is disposed on the side of V-shaped recess 9, and with bottom projections 10, 10, adapted to be disposed in transversely extending slots 11, 11 in the base member 1.
A wedge member, or key, 12 is provided to lock the clamp member 8 in position and such a key is provided with a longitudinally extending inclined face 13, adapted to bear against the inclined face 7 of the flange 6 of the base plate 1. Said key is also provided with a longitudinally extending transversely V-shaped face 14, adapted to engage the corresponding groove 9 in the clamp 8. The inclined face 13 of the key 12 is provided with notches 15 at its bottom and the flange 6 of the base plate 1 is provided with bolt holes 16 registering with said notches 15 when the key 12 is driven home, whereby spikes, or other fastening means, 17 may be driven through said bolt or spike holes 16, and registering notches 15, said spikes serving the dual function of securing the base plate 1 to the tie 2 and of securing the wedge member, or key, 12 against longitudinal displacement.
Preferably the flange 3 of the base member 1 and the clamp member 8 are provided with recesses 16 in which pins 17 are adapted to be disposed, said pins passing through the web 4' of the rail.
In installing the rail joint, the base plate 1 is disposed beneath the rail and properly positioned with reference thereto, so that the flange 3 bears against one side of the rail web. The pins 17" are then projected through apertures therefor in the web 4 and projectedinto the recesses 16 in the flange Thereupon the clamp member 8 is disposed in position against the opposite face, or side, of the web 4' and with the recesses 16 engaged with the projecting ends of the pins 17 and with the projections 10, 1O engaged. with the slots 11, 11 in the base plate 1; the wedge member, or key, 12 is then slid into position so as to secure the clamp member 8 against movement. The wedge member 12 i then secured against longitudinal displacement by means of the spikes 17 which are driven through the registering openings 16 and notches 15.
WVhat I claim to be new is:
. A rail joint comprising a base plate pro-' vided with a recess adapted to seat the bottom of a rail and conforming in contour to one side of the rail, the recess extending laterally to admit of the insertion of a side plate having a seat on one side and conforming in contour on the other side to the adjacent side ofthe rail, and the other side of the recess being provided with an angular shoulder, the bottom Wall of the recess being provided with apertures to receive lugs on the side plate, and spike holes in the top of the base plate breaking through MATT GRISAK-
