This invention relates to rail joints, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel, simple and highly efiicient device of this character which shall be adapted to hold the meeting ends of rails against relative vertical and horizontal movements with out the aid of bolts.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the nature of which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 4 be detail view of one of the locks for the removable side of the rail joint.
In the drawing, 1 and 2 designate rail- Way rails and 3 supporting ties therefor.
The rail joint comprises a base 4, an outer side 5 and an inner side 6. The sides 5 and 6 are similar and of angular formation in vertical section. The side 5 is formed integrally with the base 4, and the side 6 is removably connected to the base. The outer edge portion of the base 4 is increased in thickness in an upward direction to provide a shoulder 7 which extends longitudinally of and throughout the entire length of the base. The inner vertical face of the shoulder 7 is provided with an arcuate groove 8 for the reception of the correspondingly formed lower outer edge 6 of the side 6. The base 4 snugly contacts with the under sides. of the bases of the rails 1 and 2, and the sides 5 and 6 snugly contact with the under sides of the heads of the rails. The sides 5 and 6 also snugly contact with the longitudinal edges of the bases of the rails 1 and 2, with the upper sides of the bases and with the webs of the rails. The shoulder 7 holds the side 6 against lateral displacement in a horizontal direction, and to hold this side against displacement by rocking upwardly and outwardly locks 9 are provided. These locks contact with the outer faces of the sides 6, and are secured in place by spikes 10 which engage the sides and lower ends thereof and pass through the base 4 and enter the ties 3. The locks 9 are. provided with notches. 11 forthe recepe. tion'of the spikes 10; and-are provided with shoulders 12 which contact with the upper inner edge of the shoulder 7. The upper ends of the locks 9 fit in recesses 13 formed in the outer face of the side 6. The recesses 13 are provided with curved upper'walls 14 with which the correspondingly formed upper ends 15 of the locks 9 contact. The locks 9 extend outwardly beyond the shoulder 7 and contact with the upper side of the base 4 which is provided with spike receiving notches 16.
In practice, the base 4 and side 5 may be readily applied to the rails land 2 by sliding the base 4 on the ties 3 until the side 5 is in contact with the rails 1 and 2. The side 6 is then applied, and thereafter the locks 9 are applied. After the rail .joint has been spiked to the ties 3, the locks 9 are secured in place by the spikes 10. As the locks 9 contact with the rib 7, and as the spikes 1O engage the sides, lower ends and upper faces of the locks 9, the latter are held against any casual movement with respect to the base 4, and as the locks engage the side 6 they together with the shoulder 7 hold this side against any relative movement with respect to the base. The use of the locks 9 obviates the necessity of the use of bolts and, the provision of the Webs of the rails 1 and 2 with bolt receiving openings. The rail joint is strong, and may be readily applied and will hold the rails against relative vertical and laterally horizontal movements.
It should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative and does not pretend to give exact proportions. the said drawing is illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expecta tion that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A rail oint comprising a base, an angular side and a shoulder formed integrally with the base, a second angular side having its lower outer edge contacting with said shoulder and provided above said shoulder with a recess, a lock contacting with said shoulder and with the outer face of said second side and engaging in said. recess, and means securing the lock in place.

therewith, the inner face of said shoulder being of arcuate formation, a second angular side having an arcuate outer lower edge fitting in the recess of said shoulder, and means secured to the base and engaging said second side inwardly beyond the shoulder to secure it in place.
3. A rail oint comprising a base, an angular side and a shoulder formed integrally with the base, said base being provided ad jacent said shoulder with openings, a second angular side positioned upon the base and contacting with the shoulder and provided in its outer side and adjacent its upper end with recesses, locks contacting with the outer face of said second side and with the shoulder and having their upper ends fitting in said recesses, and means engaging the locksand base to secure the locks in place.
