Be it known that I, JOSEPH PnrEsNrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at OlmitZ, in the county of Barton and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail joints and its object is to provide a joint that will connect the meeting ends of rails in an efiicient manner and that is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in 'View the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved joint applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the base plate employed. Fig. 3a is an inverted plan view of a portion of the base plate. Fig. 4f is an inverted plan view of one casting. Fig. 5 is a cross section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar view on line 6-6 of Fig. 1.

My rail joint comprises a base plate 1 upon which the meeting ends of the rails to be joined rest and is formed with two lugs 2 which are adapted to fit snugly into recesses 3 formed in the bases of the rail ends. The plate l, further, is formed on each side and adjacent each end with spike-receiving recesses i and with longitudinally extending lateral recesses 5, and with arcuate grooves or channels G, the inner edges of said channeled or grooved portions being beveled as at 7. tending portions 9 adapted to rest upon the flanges of the rails and said castings terminate in inwardly extending lips 10 which pass over the outer edge of the rail anges and beneath the channeled portions 6 of the base plates 1; said castings being formed with perforations to receive drift pins 11 which also pass through similar openings in the ianges of the rails and through perforations 12 in the said base plate and into the rail tie 13. The usual spikes 14 have their heads in engagement with the portions 9 of the castings and pass through the recesses 4 of the base plate into the tie 13.
In assembling the joint the base plate is first placed upon the tie and in engagement with the recessed base of the rail ends, the castings are then placed in position and the spikes and drift pins driven.
I/Vhile the foregoing is the preferred form of my invention it is understood that the invention is capable of numerous modifications and refinements, all of which it is in tended to embody in the appended claim.
What is claimed is A railway joint including a base-plate having lateral edge recesses, means for effecting connection therebetween and the rail, said base-plate being provided with arcuate channels or grooves, the inner edges of the resultant channeled or grooved portions thereof being beveled, oppositely arranged castings applied to the rail-webs and having rail-ange-embracing portions provided with inwardly extending lips conformable with, and received under the arcuate channeled or grooved portions of said base-plate, said rail-flange embracing portions being received by said lateral-edge recesses intermediate of said flange-embracing portions and said lips.
