SAMUEL BLAKE, OF RICHMOND, MAINE.
BENCH VISE.
Applicationflled ma 19, 1923. Serial No. 640,269.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bench Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bench vise, the general object of the invention being to provide a device which will automatically take and hold different thicknesses of boards by simply forcing the board between the holding members of the vise and pushing it forwardly to cause the vise to grip the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for detachably holding the vise to a bench.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, il-
lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention, detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 80 Figure 1 is a plan view of a bench showing my invention in use.
Figure 2 is a side view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 1. 1
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a plan view of a portion of a bench provided with means for holding the vise thereon.
In these views 1 indicates the bench which is provided with a hole 2 and a tongue receiving socket 3. and 4 indicates the vise at which is provided with a pin 5 for engaging the hole 2 and a cross piece 6 which has a bent tongue 7 for engaging the socket 3 so that the vise can be detachably placed on the bench. The vise consists of a stationary plate 8 which has a wedge-shaped opening 9 therein for receiving the movable member 10 which is slidably mounted in the opening by means of the cross piece 11 which passes through slots 12 in the member 8 and which has its ends bent over to engage the edges of the member 8. The member 10 rests upon the cross piece 6. One wall of the opening 9 is made straight while the other wall is inclined so that as the member 10 is moved inwardly one edge thereof will rap 0 idly approach the straight wall of the opening and thus grip a board or any other object between the said wall and itself. The cross piece 11 passes through the center of the member 10 so that this cross piece will be engaged by the end of the object placed in the vise so that by pushing the object forwardly the movable member will .be moved inwardly and thus automatically grip the object.
From the above it will be seen that the vise can be easily and quickly placed'on a bench or removed therefrom and it can be made to engage and hold a board and the like when the same is being worked upon. A stop pin 13 is placed on the cross piece 11 and a portion of one wall of the opening is cut away at the small end thereof to receive this pin. A bolt 14 is carried by the movable member and passes through a station ary nut 15 embedded in the member. When a thin piece of material is to be held by the clamp this bolt is moved to a position where it will project from the member so that the strip can be placed upon the cross piece 11 and the projecting part of the bolt with its end engaging the stop pin 13. Thus the device can be used for clamping thin strips of material as well as thick pieces.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction andin the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A vise of the class described comprising a stationary member having an opening therein and slots passing through the edges thereof, a movable member of wedge-shape, a cross piece carried thereby and passing. through the slots and having its ends bent to engage the edges of the stationary bar and a supporting strip for the movable all member connected With the bottom of the stationary member adjacent the front edge thereof.
2. A vise of the class described compris- 5 ing a stationary member having a wedge shaped opening therein and slots passing through the edges thereof, a movable member of Wedge-shape, a cross piece carried thereby and passing through the slots and having its ends bent to engage the edges of the stationary member, a bolt carried by the movable member and a pin carried by the cross piece.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SAMUEL BLAKE.
