To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUST Gonarz and FREDERICK Gonn'rz, citizens of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification This invention relates, generally, to improvements in locks; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of lock for use more especially with trunks, suit-cases, travelling bags, and the like. 7
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed lock of the general character hereinafter more fully set forth, and one in which the various parts are easily and quickly assembled, and are of such arrangement and construction, so that a neat and an effectively operating as well as a readily operated lockconstruction will be the result.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in View, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel lock hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims, which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a a front elevation of a lock made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, showing in connection therewith fragmentary portions of the portions of a trunk, or the like, to which the respective parts of the lock are secured; and Figure 2 is a vertical sectional representation of the same, said section being taken on line 2-2 in said Figure 1.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the figures of the said drawings, to indicatecorresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a fragmen tary portion of the body of a trunk, or the like, and 2 indicates a portion of the lid of the same, said lid being shown with the usual marginal valance 3.
Suitably secured upon said valance, by means of rivets 4, or other suitable fastening means, is a suitably shaped body or element, 5, with which is pivotally connected in any usual manner, as at 6, an ornamental hasp-plate, as 7, which is orovided at its lower end-portion with the snail and rearwardly extending hasp-lug The loch-body proper comprises a suitably termed ornamental plate 9 which is secured by means of rivets 10, or other suitable fastening means, in the proper position upon the body of the trunk, or the like. As shown nore particularly in Figure l of the drawings. the said body-plate 9 is provided with suitably disposed peritorations, as 11, for the reception of the said rivets 10, and is also formed with a circular depression, as 12. the purpose of which will presently be more fully described. The wall-portion 13 of the said body-plate 9 is formed within said depression with lugreceiving slots, as 14;. Other slots, as 15 and 16 may also be provided. The said wall portion. 18 is also made with a hole or perforation 17, and the said wall-portion is further provided with upwardly pro ecting and suitably formed studs or posts, as l8, l9 and 20.
The reference-eharactor 21 indicates a cylindrical shell or member of such size that it may be oscillatorily fitted in the do pression 12 of said body-plate 9, the said shell, in its wall-portion 22 being formed with marginal slots 23, also with an elongated opening or slot, as 24, see Figure 10, into and through which the studs or posts 18 and 19 project, and with another slot or opening, as 25, into and through which the posts 20 projects.
Extending upwardly from the wallp0rtion 22 of the said oscillatorily disposed snell or meinher 21 is loch-stud or post 26, the said wall-portion 22 being provided with another stud or post 27. Attached to this stud or post 27 is one end of a coiled spring 29. the other end or said spi' being secured to the stud or post 90 which extends through the slot or opening tor normally maintaining the said shell or member 21 in its initial position inr'licated in Figures 3, and '7 ot the drawngs.
The wall-portion 22 of the said shell or member 21 has also secured thereon, by .means of rivets 29, or other suitable fastening means. in the proper position, a plate from which extends in an upward direction hookhaped or similar member, as
with which the hasp-lug or loop 8 of the hasp-plate 7 is adapted to be brought into holding engagement. in the manner and for the purposes hereinafter more fully decribed. shell 21, when concentrically arranged within the latter shell. so that the two shells provide a box or case, as will be evident, the portion of the said shell 3% forming a top-plate for the said box or case thus produced. The said top-plate 35 is pr0- vided with an elongated opening or slot, as 36, for reception of the previously mentioned hasp-lug or loop 8. In the proper location, the said top-plate 35 is also made with a hole or perforation 37 into which the key-receiving end of a key-post of a locking mechanism, to be presently described, extends, as will be evident from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. In order that the said shell or member 34 may be fined against rotation within the oscillatory shell or member 21, the said shell 34, as will be seen from Figure 5 of the drawings, is provided with suitably formed marginal fastening lugs, 38, which are passed through the marginal slots 23 of the shell 21 and then inserted and properly upset or riveted over in the correspondingly located slots 1 with which the wall-portion 13 of the body-plate 9 is provided. From an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, it will be understood that while the shell or member 34 is thus secured in a non-rotatable position, owing to the lengths of the various slots in the wall-portion 532 of the shell or member 21,. the latter shell may be oscillated be el: and forth, such move ment, however, being limited by the position of the tud or post 20 and the slot 25.
Within the said box or easing thus produced by the two shells or members 21 and 34: is suitably secured any desired construotion of easing or box, comprising a main body, as 39, which is provided in its Wallportion 40 with suitably disposed holes or perforations 41, so as to be centered in a fixed position upon the previously mentioned studs or posts 18 and 19. Secured upon said main body 39 is a cover-plate 42, and in the opposite sidewalls 43 are openings, as 4d and 45, in which is movably disposed suitably formed bolt, as 46. A spring 47 is employed for maintaining the operative relation of the said bolt across the chamber of the said lock-casing or box, as will be evident. Furthermore, the said lock-casing or box is provided with a suitable hey-post, as 48, for reception of a key 49 means oit which the said bolt l6 is adapted to be moved back and forth across the said lock-casing or box, so as to be brought into or out of the path of the movement of the previously mentioned'lock-stud or post 28, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figures 3, 6, 7, 14c, 15 and 16 of the drawings. As will .be evident from Figures 2, a, and 10 of the draw ings, the said key-post 48 has its respective end-portions rotatably disposed in the previously mentioned perforations or holes 17 and 37, its shank extending into and through an elongated opening or slot 50, as shown in Figure 10, with which the wall portion 22 of the oscillatory shell or member 21 is provided, and that thereby the oscillatory movement of the said shell or member 21, when the bolt 46 has been brought into its unlocked relation with the lock-stud or post 26, will not be interfered with, as will be clearly understood.
Referring now to the modified construction shown in Figures 14, 15 and 16 of the drawings, the lock-construction, in general, is substantially the same as that shown in said Figures 1 to 13 inclusive, except that the arrangement of the elongated opening 25, and the spring 28 and posts 20 and 21,
is reversed from that shown in said last-- mentioned figures, the oscillatory shell or member 21 being formed in its wall-portion 22, in lieu of the slot 25, with an elongated opening or slot 51. and with a post 52. In lieu of the post 20, the wall-portion 13 of the plate 9 is provided with an upwardly extending post'53, which projects through said opening or slot 51, and in lieu of the connecting spring 28, a spring 54: is disposed between and is connected at its ends with the respective posts 52 and 53, so as to serve the same purposes as said spring 28. Instead of the form of plate 30 with its hook-shaped member 31 and rib 32, the
wall-portion 22 of the oscillatory shell or member 21 may beprovided with a hookshaped post, as 55, with which the hasp-lug or loop 8 of the hasp-plate 7 is adapted to be brought into separable holding engagement, as will be fully understood.
The construction and operation of the re-' maining devices and parts of the lock represented in said Figures 14, 15 and 16 being the same as the construction and operation of the devices and parts of the lock illustrated in said Figures 1 to 13 inclusive,
any further description of the same is deemed unnecessary.

hook-shaped hasp-loop engaging post upon said plate, a rib extending upwardly from said plate, said rib having a downwardly inclined portion extending toward said hook-shaped post, and a hasp-plate adapted to ride upon said rib and having a loop adapted to be brought into separable holding engagement with said hook-shaped post.
10. A lock comprising a main base-plate, a shell oscillatorily disposed upon said baseplate, a second shell within and having a fixed relation to said oscillatory shell, a r plate mounted upon said oscillatory shell, a
