Anm/mur/mmAM/c Ca Al I mum/5's moons) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AARON J. NELLIS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent bio- 149,144, dated March 31, 1874; application filed November 17, 1873.
, plying and using the same. Fig. 2 is a view of the buckle.
'To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will describe its construction and manner of use.
I make a solid buckle, a, having two openings or slots, a and (0 I pass the end of the strap 22 through the slot a and fold it back and secure it to the strap by means of a rivet, c. On the rivet 0 I attach the hook (I, which extends across the slot a The strap 1) is bent around the bale, in the usual way, and a loop, 0, is formed at its other end. This loop is pressed through the slot a and the hook passed through it, as shown. I have then a perfect tie, simple in its construction, and easy of application and use. The friction against the end of the tie-opening a and upon the hook d is so great that it is impossible to pull the strap out of the tie-opening a Instead of two openings to and a in the buckle a, the opening a may be made a little WltlBlfitIlCl the rear end of the strap secured in it instead of in the opening 0 The hook being attached to the strap, as shown, or to the buckle itself, in any convenient way, is not liable to become lost.
The strap 1) may be looped, as at e, at any desired point, so that when the bale is compressed it may be taken up to suit the reduced size of the bale.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the bale-band, having one end looped and the hook O riveted there to, with the closed buckle a, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said AARON J. N ELLIS, have hereunto set my hand.
AARON J. NELLIS.
