which the following is a speoification, referenee being had to the aecompanying drawin s.
y invention relates to Web roll suqports for'printing'presses and other mac unery Operating upon fabrici. In such machinery, an partioularly in connection with newspaper presses, the Web roll while being drawn into the press is carried on a maiidrel held between ehueks or vfreely rotaiing spindles having heads Which fit into and against the ends of the' mandrel so as to center it and support the roll firi'nly without interfering with its freerotation. In high speed newspaper work it is necessary that the paper roll supports be so constructed that the rolls may bemounted-n the supports 'quiekly and aecurately, and that/'the manclrels of exhausted rolls he easily removable, so that there will he no appreeiable loss of time in Chang-ing rolls, and, therefore, such paper roll supports sre usually so construeted that one of the spindles is inovahle longitudinally toward and from the other and in the samo axial line so that the eooperating spindles of a given roll support may he separated to release the mandrel of an exhausted roll, or may be brought together to engage the Inandrel of a. fresh roll; a level; being provided for not only moving the lonitudinally movahle spindle, but also, for oeking the movable spindle in operatve position. Such roll supports as heretofore oonstructed do not, however. operate satisfaotorily under all'eonditions, because the range of moveinent of the longitudinally mov-able spindle is constant or invariahle, and as the mandrels are not all of the same length it oeours With more or less frequeney that a mandrel is not held tightly and properly eentere because of a loose engageinenttherewith of the spindle heads, or, in case the mendrel happen-s to be too long, the morahle spindle cannot he set over far enough to permit the lever to he seourely loclted, and, therefore, there is {longer that the roll-may work loose.
The obgeet ol mypresent 'inventioo is to a roll o f pa Je'r orother.
.port agai'fif' improve the construction of paper roll su Ports of the character mentioned by provi ing a. construction which will ermit the range' of movement of the mora le spindle to he quiokly and aeeurately afljusted whenever occasion requires` so that the proper engagement o f the spintlle heads with the mandrel end the looking of the parts in opera-- tire position may be assured. I aeeoinplish this object as illnstrated in the drawings and herenafter descrihod. What 1 regard as new is set forth in the claims.
In the aecompanying drawingsf Fig. 1 is an elevation, with some parts in section, and the intermediate portions of the rolls broken away, showing,r a multiple roll {Japer roll stand equipped with roll holders iaving my improvements applied thereto; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the adjnstable member 'of one of the roll holders.
In the druwings I have shown my invention applied to o rotary newspaper roll stand arranged to carry three wet rolls, and therefore, provided with three pairs otroll holders. This will be aparent from on inspection of Fig. 1 in which 3 indioates the central siiportng shaft of the roll stand which is mounted in saitahle bearings provided in standards 4, 5 so as to be variable of rotation. Mounted upon this sli-lift are two brackets 6, 7 set far enough ::part so that the rolls Sana- V be' placed between them, and keyed to the shaft 3 so that they rotate therewith. Eaeh 'oflhese braekets oomprises three pairs of radially-dlsposed arms '10, the
arms ofV the several pairs being;l apart, each pair of arms-of the bracket 5 being opposite :1 pair of arms of bracket 7. The arms of the bracket 7 are'prorided with bearings 11, 12 in which are moun'ted rotaryspindles 13 which havt` no longitudinal inove'ment .in their bea rinfls. The spindles'l-l are provided with ehuek theads 14 ada ted to engage one end of the usal. xnandre Which forn'is the center of'the paper roll, .as shown in Fig. 1'. The arms 9, 10 of the br'aelet'fi are provided with hear-ing hlocks 15,'16, in which .is monntod a sliding support 17" 'whichdoes not rotate i but is eapeble of ,loneitudinal n \remont in its hearngs. Ail`or holding this *alien it is n Vied 'with e i: 3,1 m
ty 18 into whit Key 19 secured to the boariug block 15 by a Screw 20, as shown in Fig. 2, but this may be accomplished in any other suitable way. Mounted in the support 17, which is hollow, is a spindle 21 arranged in axial alincment with the spindle 13 and having a head 22 adapted to engage the roll mandrel and to cooperate with the corresponding head 14 to center and firnily secure the niandrcl in place. Preferably the spindle 21, and also the spindle 13 are mounted in anti-friction beerings 23, 2-1, and the spindle 21 is held against longitudinal movement independently of the support 17 by a rut 25 screwed upon its inner end, and a cap 26 screwed into the inner end of the support 17.
Tho support 17 is moved longtudinally toward and from the opposite spindle 13 to engage or release the roll by means of a lever 27, which in the construction illustrated is fulcrumed at its lower end upon a pivot 28 carried by a block 29 fixedlyl secured to the sup ort 17, as by screws 30, this block being p aced atsome intermediate point between the bearing blocks 15, 16 as shown in 2. The intermedi'ate portion of the level` 27 is connected with the block 15 by a link 31 which is pivotallyoonnected with the lever 27 by a pirot 32 and is indirectly connected with the block 15 by means of a plunger 33 and a pivot 3fl. `The plunger 33 is normally locked in fixed relation to the block 15, but is capable of being moved lonitudinally of itself and in parallelism with tghe support 17 for the purpose of sccurinr a line adjustment, as will be heeinafter described, but, for the present, it Will be noted that when the parts are in the position shown in. full Iines in Fig, 2, if the lever 27 be moved over to the right the pivot 32 will act as a fulcrum and the'inner end of the lever will swine to the left, moving the support 17 and sp1ndle-2 in the same direction until the parts assume the position shown in dotted lines in said figure. 'When the parts are in the latter losition, by moving the lever 27 to the le t theywill be rcstored to the position shown in full lines. Thus the support 17 and spindle 21 may easily be moved toward or from the corrospondino; spindle 13 on the opposite side of the roll, and the range of movelnent of the spindle 21 and its support will be constant. Fig. `2 shows the operative position of `the spindle 21 in full lines, and it is lockedfin such position by a springlatch 27' monn'ed on the,r lever 27, and having a book 35 which en* gages a pin 36 carried by the link 31i, Preferably this link is a double one, and the pin 36 is fitted between the two members thereof so that it is securely held in position. 1. Obviously, when the latch-27'l is in its operhtive position the lever 27 cannot be actuated, and the spindle 21 cannot move out of its opeifative position.

While the construction described operates very satisfactorily With nianrh'els of uniform length, it frequently happens that their length varies, and, therefore, it is necessary that the range of movcment of the spindlo 21 and its sup ort 17, that is to say, the extent to whicli they are moved toward the opposite spindle by the actuation of the operating lever 27, be adjusted to compensate for such variation, and that provision be made for making such adjustment easily and quickly in order that the mounting of the rolls in the stand be not delayed. In my improved a paratus this is accomplished by ad- ]usting t e plunger 33 to move the pivot 32 closer to or farther from the opposin chuclc member at the other side of the rol. For this purpose the plunger 33 is provided with internal Screw threads in which is fitted the screw threaded end 37 of a bolt 38, as shown at the left in Fig. 2. This bolt is mountcd in a`bearing block 39 which is bored concentrically with the plunger 33 and is litted over the outer end of said plunger and secured to the bearing block 15, preferably by Nl bolts 40 shown in Figi 1. A collar 42 is carried by the bolt 38 etween the block 39 and the outer end of the plunger so as to prevent outward movement of the bolt 38.
This collar is preferably fitted in the outer end of the bore in which the plunger 33 operates, so that it is enclosed by theblock 39. A hand wheel 43 is mounted on the outer en of the bolt 38, which is preferably square 44 indicates a nut which secures the hand wheel 43 in place.
By this construction, by rotating the handwheel 43 in one direction, the bolt 38 may be turned to force the plunger 33 to- Ward the 'right as viewed in Fig. 2, thereby to:)
the spindle head 22 over to the right,
settin as wil be required to accommodate a shorter mandrel. In like manner, by reversing the rotation of the hand wheel 43, the spindle head 22 can be set back to accommodatela It will be understooti, of course, that instead of placing the adjustable 'spindles at the left-hand end of the shaft 3, as illu'strated, they may be placed `*at-the oppositeiend.
For rotating the aihaft 3 I preferably pro- `macbiuery than 'Printing presses, as it, is 1815 45 driven by suitable igearing actuated by a motorV 46, but this 'has nothing to do 'lwith my present invention, whiclirelates` solely to the devices fcr- It should Ibe understood. therefore,
suitable for use in any situation where a. roll of fabric is to be mounted so as to be cable of unreeling freely.
