EDUCATIONAL TABLE.
Application filed January 4, 192e.
To @ZZ wie m t may concern:
Be it .known that l, VnRNA ONEAL WAT- niNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at .fitlantm in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and use iul Improvements in Educational Tables; and l do hereby declare the following to be a i'ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in educational apparatus of that type disclosed in Letters Patent 1,392,726, granted to me October ith, 1921, and more particularly to improvements in that type disclosed in my application filed May 20th, 1,920, Serial Number 382,839, and allowed May 20, 1921.
The primaryobject of the present invention is the provision of an educational apparatus wherein the body, which like the body ot' the apparatus disclosed in said allowed application is provided at one side with a drawing board and at its other side with a perforated board, may be `readily and quickly reversed so as to present either of said boards in `position for use, without necessitating the detachment or removal of the body from its support.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an educational apparatus of the kind stated wherein the reversible body may be supported at any desired angle with respect to the horizontal.
A still. further object of the invention is the provision of an'educational apparatus of the kind set forth wherein the body is provided with conveniently located receptacles for chalk, pegs, pastes and like articles used in connection with the apparatus.
With the above and other objectsin View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement ofparts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of an educational apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention, the body being shown in position with the blackboard uppermost or in position for use,
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating the perforated board uppermost or in position for use,
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view illus- Sel'ial No. 526,913.
trating the manner in which the body is secured to its support,
Figure d is perspective view of fragmentary parts oic the body and its support,
Figure 5 is a view in end elevation of the apparatus, the lower portion of the support being broken away,
Figure 6 is a viewin end elevation of the body of the apparatus,
Figure 7 vis a detail perspective view of oneof the clamping plates for the legs of the support,
Figure 8 is a detail perspective view of an-` other of the clampingv plates for the legs'of the support,
Figure 9 is a detail perspective view of the plates shown in Figure 8, viewing the opposite side of the plate, and
Figure 10 is a detail perspective view of the easel.
Like reference characters designate like or similar parts throughout the views.
In reducing the invention to practice, a reversible body A is provided. The body A has perforated peg receiving board B at one side. At one end of the board B, a receptacle 10 is provided within the body to conveniently contain the pegs 11 which are insertible into the perforations of the board B according to the disclosures in said patent and allowed application. The opposite side ot the body A is provided with a blackboard surface or drawing board C and a receptacle at one end thereof for pencils, crayons and the like, Over the receptacles` closures or covers 12 are provided, being hinged to thebody as at 13. lVhen in closed position the outer surfaces of the closures 12 are iiush with the outer surfaces of the body A. The closure 12 may be fastened against accidental vopening bymeans ot hasps 14 cooperating with staples or fastenings 15 on one of the lateral sides of the body A. These receptacles form a very eiiicient and convenient means to retain the pegs, pencils, crayons, etc., especiallyfin view of the fact that the user may remove them from the receptacles and use them in connection with the board B or board C without a` change in his position.
At'each end of the body A two legs are provided as at 16. Fach pair of legs 16 are in inclined yor converging relation, and are connected at their upper ends. Plates 17 and 18 are disposed on opposite sides of the grooves into which the legs 6 lit, Such lianges 20 and 2l eiciently reinforce the at their legs i6 and connect the n ends.
@n plate i7, a rai serrated rosette 22 is provided. Fasten'cd to each ond ot the body A, is a disc or plate 23 secured as by means of bolts or screws 2l and which has raised portions 2l' forming a serrated rosette similar to the rosette losettes 22 and 23 are adapted tor interengagement and the bolt 26 extentie through the plate 23. rlhe bolts 25 pass through suitable openings in the end boards of body fr, the plates 17 and 18 and legs le, and beyond the plates 18 the bolts receiye fastening nuts 2?, preferably in Winged torni to facilitate manipulation by means ot the lingers. Such disposition enables the removal ot the bolts so as to avoid their projecting from the casingvf'hen the device is in portable torni. Detachments or" bolts 26 enables legs 1G to be removed and inserted 'for compact packing or portage into body A, as covered in 'my said Patent 1,392,726.
llhen the nut 27 is tightened, it will be realized that the rosettes 22 and 28 Will be in intimate interlitting contact` and Will thus hold the top against turning from the bolt or pivot 26 relative to the legs 16. V/vhen it is desired to reverse the body B or vary the angle thereof, nut 27 is loosened and the body A then appropriately adjusted, after which the nut 27 is again tightened so that the rosettes 22 and 23 will intercngage and secure the body in the adjusted position. y
An easel D may support sheets, books or other instruction mediums E as in my said patent. This easel is of simplitied construction to that et the patent, preferably being Vmade of a single strand of Wire including clamping and retaining coils 28 and legs 29 to detachably engage sockets 30 on the body A. The easel may be removed when desir d and packed or carried within the body A as disclosed in my said patent.
This constructionenables reversal to present either boar l l5 or C uppermost simply by swivel movement on bolts 26 Which is permissible vmen nuts 27 are loose. Also regardless of 'which board is uppermost, the easel C may be positioned in the appropriate brackets 30 so as to be located in the rear or same side ot the table and in the saine position with respect to the student or user. This is greatly advantageous over the construction of thc said allowed application Where the top has to be detached or removed in order to reverse it.
lt is to be understood that changes in the principles may be resorted to inasmuch as l have shown merely one practical embodiment since variations are possible Within the spirit and scope.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim is l. An educational apparatus having a body, legs, disposed at an angle to each other, inner and outer plates, bolts passing through said plates and legs, said plates having substantially central V-shaped ianges disposed intermediate and abutting the legs, said plates having outer flanges overlapping the legs, a rosette 0n one of said plates, a rosette on said body, and a fastening bolt extending from said body and passing through said rosettes.
2. An educational apparatus comprising a body having a draw-ing board and a Work board, legs to which said body 1s pivoted for reversal to selectively present said boards in utile position, brackets at each side ot the body in planes intermediate said boards, and an easel detachably engageable with said brackets whereby it may be secured in the same position With respect to the same stu dent in either position of the body.
ln testimony whereof l atiix my signature in presence or two Witnesses.
