UNITED STATES 1,491,0a PATENT OFFICE.y
JOHN nnnosv, or rHrLAnnnPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHMENT non BATHTUBS.
Application led April 16, 1923.v Serial No. 632,240.
17 'o all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN ERDosY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Bathtubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for bath tubs and its object is to provide means for comfortably supporting a personin the tub above its bottom and for supplying the tub with vapors or p heated fluids thereby adapting the tub for use in taking Turkish yor other vapor baths.
This object, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a bath tub having my invention applied thereto, l'
Figure 2 a side view of Figure 1,
Figure 3 a central longitudinal section through Figure 1, Y
Figure 4E a section on line t-f of Figure 3,
Figure 5 a perspective view of a reinforcing plate constructed in accordance with my invention, V
Figure 6 a fragmentary perspective view of the connecting end of one of the iiuid conduits,
Figure 7 a central section through the conduits shown in Figure 6 illustrating it connected to the reinforcing plate,
Figure 8 a perspective view of a span connection, and
Figure 9 a ing hook. v
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a bath tub having the usual turned edge 2. A cover 3 rests on the turned edge and comprises a frame et of any suitable character shaped to conform to the edge of the tub and having spans or arches 5 and 6 detachably mounted in supporting clips 5 -and 6a and spanning the tub from side to side. The supporting clips are secured to the frame et in any suitable manner. A cover 7 of exible sheet material is secured `to the frame and spans in any suitable manner. The frame is hinged at 8 and has one of its ends gapped so that a person may enter the tub and lower the cover without it interfering with his head.
A bed 9 is composed of tubes 1() connected perspective view of a supportto the opposite sides ofthe bath tub by links 11 and hooks 12 which engage the turned edge of the tub. A perforated sheet 13 is se-` cured to the tubes in any suitable manner and comprises longitudinal strips 14e inten" to permit a person to keep his head from under the cover.y For the purpose of making the inner seal for the fluid Within the tub, an elastic sheet 19, sewed to the cover to close a part of the opening, is adapted to iit around the neck of the person.
1 The means for delivering fluid to the tub comprise a reinforcing plate 2O having its edges21 bent in U shape to receive the edges 22 of'an opening in the flexible sheet 7 and clamp them in place by pressing thelegs of they U together or depressing spaced points 23 along its length as shown in Figures 5 and 7. The top and side edges 21A of the plate extend beyond the top of the U part to provide connecting flanges 24. Openings 25 and 26 in the reinforcing plate receive pipes 27 and 28. Pipe 27 is removably connected toa casing 29 which encloses a boiler 30 to which the pipe 28 is removably connected. Any suitable burner 31 may be provided for heating the liquid in the boiler. Pipe 27 carries the heated air from the burner into the tub and pipe 28 carries the vapor, from the fluid in the boiler, into the tub. A conduit 32 is connected to the anges 24C by hooked flanges 33 at the top and sides thereof. The conduit 32 extends downwardly and inwardly below and under the bed and is preferably covered with a heat insulating material te protect the bather from getting scorched.
The bed is connected to the bath tub by links 11 and hooks 12 as shown in Figures 3 and 4. n The hooks, embracing the turned edge, securely hold the bed in position. The head rest 17 bears against the turned edge 2 and thus provides an inclined surface against which a person may comfortab'ly'rest his head. The lcover is placed on the edge of the tub and its foot end connected to the bed by the coiled springs. `'KFheiiuid delivery pipes 27 `and 28 are placed in holes 25 and l25 lin the reinforcing plate and conduit 32 is connected to flange 24E of the reinforcing plate Within the tub and extended beneath the bed. Thek apparatus is then ready for use. A person may noiv get on the bed and swing the head end of the cover over his body and connect it to the bed by the coiled springs. The elastic or rubber sheet 19 lits snugly around the persons neel; and prevents steam from escaping. The` vaporized liquid passes through pipe 28 into the` tub and the heat from the burner passes through pipe 2'?. The ends of pipes27 and 2S lead into the conduit 32 which delivers the vapor and hot air underneath the person on the bed.
Whenit is desired to put my attachment away in a small space, the pipes 27 and 28 are removed from holes 2.5 and 26 in the reinforcing plate and the conduit 32 re'- moved from the flanges 24 by sliding it upvvard olli' the flanges, it being understood that springs 16 at the head'end of the cover, have been disconnected from span n 5. Springs 16a are then disconnected from span 6 and the spans removed from their supporting clips 5a and 6a. The cover may then be folded on hinge 8. The bed is disconnected and removed from the tub and the head rest folded on its hinge. The parts may thenr be placed one on the other and put away into a small space.
IVhile I have described my invention as taking aparticular form, it Will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed Without departing from the spirit thereof7 and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth7` but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as neiv and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In combination with a bath tub; a hingedy cover for the tub; a bed supported by the tub; resilient means for'conn'ecting the hinged parts of the cover to the bed, and meansfor delivering fluid through the cover into the tub.
