UNITED STATES HARRY s. CULVER, or eaanvrnnnfnnw YORK.
'LIn Semen Application filed February 5, 1923. Serial No. 617,038.
To all whom it may 'ooncermi Be it known that I, HARRIS. Convert, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granville, in the county of Vashington and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lid Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates the provision of a hinged cover support, primarily infrom said stationary member by further elevating the cover, to permit the cover to be subsequently lowered to its closed position.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accoinpanyingdrawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a View showing the manner of supporting the cover of an article of furniture in its elevated position by means of the invention. v
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the arrangement of parts when the cover is in its closed position.
Figure 1 is a View in elevation partly in section of the sliding bar.
Figure 5 is a detail view of the stationary member.
Figure 6 is a view showing the manner in which the pivoted element of the sliding bar is moved to its active position just prior to the lowering of the cover to its closed position.
' Figure 7 is a detail view of the guide plate designed to be used as a substitute for the stationary member above referred to.
Figure 8 is a view of the guide plate which is used in conjunction with the stationary member.
Referring to the drawings in detail A indicates generally an article of furniture,
including a hinged cover B.
The cover support forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a small platelO provided with apertured ears 11 so that the plate can be conveniently attached to the side of the cover B, the plate being formed with an offset lug -12, to which the sliding bar 13 is pivotally connected. This bar passes through a slot or opening 14: in the top of the article of furniture herein illustrated, which is in the nature of a cabinet forming part of a talking machine. It is to be understood that the invention can be used in conjunction with refrigerato-rs which of course is not provided with such a top or bed such as the cabinethere' in shown, or with'any other article of furnitureprovided with a hinged cover. Se-
cured within the article of furniture at an appropriate point, is a plate 15 which supports a substantially U-shaped member 16, the latter being diagonally disposed, and having its parallel limbs connected together by a cross piece 17. The bar 13 passes between the cross piece 17 and the adjacent endof the U-shaped member, andcooperates with one limb of the latter to support the cover in an elevated position. Manifestly, the bar 13 moves with the raising and lowering of the cover B, and with relation to the plate 15 and its associated parts which constitute the stationarymember above referred to; The bar 13 along one longitudinal edge is provided with a notch 18 adapted to receive the adjacent parallel limb of the U-shaped member, when the cover is elevated a predetermined distance and supporting the cover in this position. The bar 13 is preferably channel shaped in cross section, and pivoted between the side portions of the bar is an element 19 which normally depends from the bar substantially at a right angle there-to. This element is provided and arranged in a manner to permit the bar to be released from the U-slraped member by simply manipulating the cover B when it is desired to close the cover. For this purpose it is only necessary to slightly elevate the cover for the purpose of moving the notch 18 of the which coincides with the slot 14. the modified form of guide plate is of the member 16, during which movement of the cover and bar 13, the pivoted element 19 is moved between the side members of the bar as it passes the stationary member 16. After the pivoted element 19 is moved from the underside of the stationary member to a position above the latter, it gravitates to itsnormal position to project from between the side members of thebar as illustrated. The lower end of the bar is provided with a stop pin 20 which limits the upward movement of the bar under any circumstances. This pin cooperates with the cross piece 17 of the U-shaped member. Now, after the pivoted element has been arranged above the stationary member in the manner just stated, the cover can be lowered without the notch 18 dropping into engagement with the U-shaped member 1 this being prohibited by the pivoted element contacting the adjacent limb of the U-shaped member and guiding the bar through the side member, as the pivoted element is again forced between the sides of the bar into a'positio-n parallel therewith. The cover can thus be conveniently lowered into its closed position, and whenthe element '19 passes the stationary member it graviitates to its normal position for furtherxuse. vThe invention is very simple in construction and positive in operation for the purpose intended.
Arranged above the slot 14 through which the bar 13 passes, is a guide plate 21 of elongated contour provided with a slot 22 As shown same general outline as the plate 21 but the slot 23 in this modified construction is divided by a transverse strip-24 which takes the place of the stationary member above described in its entirety. In other words, when the guide plate 25 is used, the transverse strip 24' is received by the notch 18 of the bar for the purpose of supporting the do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. The combination with an article of furniture having a hinged cover, of a support therefor including a sliding bar or" channel like formation in cross section, terminally secured to the cover for movement therewith, a stationary member secured to the article of furniture and through which the bar ope-rates, said bar having a notch adapted to receive a portion of the stationary member when the cover is raised shaped member supported by the plate, a'
transverse member connecting the parallel limbs of the U-shaped member, and between which and the adjacent end of said U-shaped member said bar slides, said bar automatically gravitating to a position whereby the notch receives the adjacent limb of the U-shaped member when the cover is raised to a predetermined position, and a pivoted element carried by said bar adj acent said notch and cooperating with said U-shaped member to effect arelease of the bar when the cover isfurther elevated, and allowing the cover to be subsequently lowered to a closed position.
In testimony whereof. I aflix my signature.
HARRY S. CULVER.
