Patented pr. 22, 1924. UNITED STATES 1,490,996 PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHEW VIERENGEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ENVELOIE BG.
Application led March 10, 1922..
To all whom. it may concern.' Be it known that. I, MATTHEW VIEREN- cnn, a citizen of the United States of America. and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelope BagsJ of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement on those enve ope-bags which may be ofthe usual dimensions of mailing envelopes or shop ping bags and are provided with handling means whereby they are readily supported and carried by hand from place toplace.
One object of my resent invention is to provide an envelopeag, with an improved construction of closure flap through which a handling means is passed, ito' seat the closure-flap and at the same time provide 'a supporting device whereby the` envelopebag may be carried.
Another object of my invention isto provide an improved construction of handling means which isv used in connection with my improved Vclosure-flap.
y invention consists in the novel features of construction .hereinafter specificallydescribed and claimed.
In order that my invention may be Vfully understood I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawin in which:
ig. l is a perspective view of my improved envelope-bag provided with my improved handling means innormal position; the closure-flap being seated. l
Fi 2 is a central sectional view taken on t e line 2-2 of, Fig. 1 looking, in the direction of the arrows. l y
Fig. 3 is a central sectional view taken on the same linel 2.-.2 of Fig. 1; the handling means being withdrawn and the closure-flap being open. Y y
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the handling means. Y
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a modified form ofvhandling means for large envelope-bags. L
1 is the body of an envelope-bag con structed, of any suitable material sach as paper,v with my improved closurefiap 2, formed with an inner slit 3 providing a central `narrow opening at the fold of the closure-Hap which also has another outer' vi'niioi'ce piece at described.
ing'the hand opening 9.

slit'll providing a y fold ot the closure-flap and the outer edge oiE the latter. The bodv has a fold-crease 5. to facilitate the folding ot the envelope-bag. the inner fold-slit 3 I provide a re-intorce piece 6 andlalsoior the outer slit i a re- Mtv handling means is constructed 'as now A. tongue 8 is securedby any suitable means to the body of'thecnvelopebag and is used to seat the closure-Hap 2 and the Ytongue is provided with a finger hole 9 at its upper end whereby the eui'elope-ba can be readily supported and carried. n closing the receptacle. the closure-Hap is folded and the tongue Fl is placed over the outer edge of the closure-flap and passed from the outside of the closure-Hap 2 through the outer slit 1. between the closure-flap and the body ot` the envelope-bag and then through the inner slit 3 where it projects as a handle piece 10 which is grasped by the hand. a y be inserted in the finger hole 9. To facili# tate the inserting of the tongue or the withdrawing or pulling outyvof thetongue from engagement with the closure-flap, a. lip 11 is formed by a. cut 12. partly severing a piecein the tongue. To assist in withdrawing the tongue. a vfold-crease 13'I is formed thereon a distance beneath the foldcrease of the body ot the envelope-bag- In Fig. 5 I show a modification in the construction of the handling means for large envelope-bags in the form of a broad tongue 8 having a hand-opening 9 for tliefingers iin the handle 10, a front lip 11 being formed in the tongue by a cut 1Q. 14 is a reinforce piece for thel handle of the tongue 8 left in the latter `in form- Myclosure lmeans has the advantage of holding the flap down `and the envelope-bag safely closed even if the contents make the envelope-bag spread out and bulky.
It is plain that my tongue device does not depend on any particular make of envelope-bag asit can be secured in any suitf able manner such asrby gumming or Wire stapling to an envelope-bag having a closure-flap, and any kind of seams.`
For paper, light in weight. the reinforcing pieces are put on the closure-flap to strengthen the paper where the slitsare out through; but if the-paper is strong i For strengthening finger of which mav enough the reinforcing pieces :1re not needed.
Another advantage of lny construction is that itI is a simple matter of closing the envelope-bug as it is only neeessr r to put the tongue into the outer slit 4 an then press it und it will pass through the inner slit uut muutieally.
The closure-flap being folded against the body. the tongue is merely inserted in the outer slit und pressed through the inner .slit through Whirh it readily projects and its free endgrusped und pulled into plane.
Ilariug thus described my invention the followingY is what I claim ns new therein und desire to secure b v Letters lutent:
l. Au envelope-bag haring u body constructed with n closure-flap`r an inner slit pro\'iding a tongue opening` an outer slit in the closure-flap, also providing a tongue opening und a tongue on the body, adapted to 'extend over the front of. the closure-flap, then pass through the outer slit` between the elosure-tlap and the body und then through the innex` slit and beyond the body so as to provide a handling means for the envelope-bag. y
2. An envelope-bag having n body construrted with :L closure-Hap. an inner slit at the fold line providing a tongue opening, an outer slit 1n the closure flap, also roviding a tongue. opening.: and a tongue on the body adapted to extend over the front of the closure-flap, then pass through the outer slit, between the Closure-flap and body and then through the inner slit andbe ond the body so as to provide a handling means for the envelope-bag.
3. An envelope-bug having n body eonstructed with u closure-hap7 un inner slit, an outer slit in the closure-Hup, und a tongue on the body haring u finger opening and adapted to extend over the trout olf the closure-flap` then pass through vthe outer slit. between the closure flap and the bod)VY and then through the .inner slit and beyond the body so as to provide a handlingr menus for the envelopefbag. i
4. An envelope-bar;lr having a body construeted with a elosure-tlnp,'an inner slit, an outer slit in the elosureitlap, und a tongue on the body haring u slit therein providing n tongue ing 11p.
