TRUCK SIDE FRAME.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. WAsHBUnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Englewood,=in the county of Bergen and State ot New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Truck Side Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a Jfull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a truck side trame and also to an improved process of producing the same.
lt is an object ot' this invention to provide a side frame, the parts of which are integrally connected and the tension and compression members of which are welded together.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a side frame in connection with which a standard Master Car Builders journal box can be used.
It is another object of this invention to so construct the side frame and its connection to the journal box that a slight rotative movement of the journal box about the vertical axis relative to the side frame is permitted. l
lt is still a Jfurther object ot the invention to provide novel means or attaching the brake beam to the bolster columns of the side frame.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will ibe fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in whichlike reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different views, and in which,

Referring tothe drawings, the side frame is seen to comprise the usual compression central socket adapted` to lit over a cylin- Y drical boss .or projection (Z1 formed on the journal box. The cap member l. has a flange extending overthe top of said box and is also formed with a portion spaced therefrom forming a socket or cavity la, the largest) dimension of which is at its open or inner side. The compression member a extends into this socket and the tension member b is also bent adjacent its end to extend into the socket in contact with the .memberl o and has its extreme end bent upwardly on a reverse curve so that the end of the member is in line with the end or the member a. Preferably, the members a and b are welded together at their contacting end portions to formi an integral structure and are formed with a hole al extending therethrough. The member 1 is also formed with a hole 1b in its top side and at its lower side adjacent its inner edge is provided with a groove 1c.
\ After the members a and b have been connected. as described, and litted into the socket 1n, molten metal is poured into said socket so as to surround the said members and extend through the mold al and into the groove 1" and also to fill the hole 1b. Thelgnefmber l will, of course, be disposed in suitable cores or molds and the hole lb may conveniently be used as a pouring hole for this operation. A cast filler is thus formed in the socket 1a which securely and permanently unites the parts into one substantially integral structure. A hole is also formed through the top of member 1 to receive a bolt 2, the member b also being provided with a hole through which this bolt also passes. thro-ugh thecast ller in the socket la. The hole for the bolt may be drilled through this filler but preferably a core is inserted through the hole in the member b and through the member' 1 to provide this hole, which core may b-e removed' after the ller is cast into place. The bolt 2 firmly secures the'member 1 to the top plate d2 of the journ-al bo-x7 said plate being provided with a square cavityadapted to receive a nut applied tol said bolt.

The journal box CZ has projecting centrally from its bottom portion an integral lug (Z3 and the connecting plank member e is formed with an opening somewhat loosely tting over this lug Z3 and a. wedge member 3 is driven through an opening formed in the lug to hold the member al securely thereon, said wedge being held in place by a split key passing through its small end. Bolster columns c are formed at their upper ends with openings through which pass the members a and said columns are also formed with a. recess extending downwardly from said openings along the inner side thereof, filling holes c1 passing from said recess through `the wedge portion of the colun'in The openings at the top of the columns c are provided with holes 02 extending through `the top and bottom portions thereof and the members a lare also provided with holes extending therethrough substantially in alinement with the holes 02. .After the members a have been disposed in the columns in proper relation, molten iet-al is poured into said openings to llill the space at the top and bottom of the members o and the holes therethrough as well as the holes c2. The columns will at this time be surrounded by suitable mold members to hold the molten metal in proper position, -and said metal will not only fill the openings through the to-p of the columns but the molds will be so arranged that said metal will fill the recess on the inner side of said columns 4and also pass into and fill the holes (51.'
The columns c are also provided with openings extending diagonally through their lower portion and the members and e are arranged to be Vdisposed in said openings and extend therethrough, said members beformed with aligned holes e1 extending therethrough substantially in the :center of sai-d openings. The holes c3 also extend vertically downward through the bot-toms of the bolster columns e and communica-te with the openings through the bottom thereof. lllhen theJ members Z) and e are properly disposed in the lower openings in the member c suitable cores are placed Aabout these openings and molten metal is: poured thereinto which surrounds the members and e and dlls the hole el therethrough. A cast filler .Il extends transversely of the side frames having its flanged portions disposed upwardly and a plate 5 has flanged portions '5a riveted tothe wedge portion of said channel at the ends thereof, said plate having a curved flange at each side contacting with the top of the curved portion of member b and also having spaced lugs 5* at the ends and central portion thereof which extend downwardly a slight distance at each side ofthe member b, asv clearly shown in Fig. 3.
To secure the brake beam to the bolster columns, a short lug c4 is cast on the side thereof, and thislug is 'provided Awith spaced bored or drilled holes 05. The holes 05 are adapted to receive the ends of a 'U-shaped rod 6 which is firmly held in said holes by the wedge key '7 driven therethrough and through the lugs c4.
The frame is designed so that the same can be used with a standard Master Car Builders journal box and the use of the frame with such a standard box is shown in Fig. 4.-. When thus used, the member l will be connected to the box by bolts 8 passing through the bolt holes formed in said box and the flange of member l. Short bolts 9 will also secure the member 1 and the box and tie e, together at the inner side. The liournal box d shown will also be used with the standard type of side frame, but when so used, it will preferably be bolted thereto by bolts passing through the holes at the top and bottom portions thereof, as shown at the right hand end of Fig. 1.
From the above descrip-tion it will be seen that applicant has provided a simple, strong and efficient structure of side frame, which frame can be made of much lighter const-rue4 tion than frames of the prior art and yet have great abundance of strength. It will be noted that the end of member b being heut up into line with the end of member a, this end will transmit any tension placed thereon through the filler to the ends of the compression member ai. The typev of fastenin the end of `the tension member b shown has, in practice, proven to be so eiiiclient that the said members will be ruptured in tension before the end thereof will pull out of the member l. By having the nem'ber l ext-ending over the cylindrical projection (Z1 and the journal bearing connected to l by the central. bolt 2, it will be vnoted that a slight rotative movement of the frame in relation to the journal is permitted, .there bei-ng a small amount of lost motion between the lug (Z3 and the bar e. ASuch a. slight rotation is desirable when the trucks are going around a curve.
The cast plates at the inner side of the columns o form the chafing plates for the 'bolster and these cast plates are held firmly in place by extending through the holes c1. When the chating plates have become worn the same may be replaced by being broken away with a hammer and a steel plate se cured in their place by rivets extending through the holes 01 Heretofore it; has been customary to secure the brake beam to the bolster columns by having an apertured lug projecting from the side thereof. With this structure it often happens that'in a wreck the lug would be struck and broken off, thus making it necessary to scrap the entire bolster casting. With the struct-ure described, the lug c* is quite short and the brake beam is `carried by' the bent rod 6. If the rod 6 should be subjected to a great shock or strain, the same will be either bent or broken and the lug c4 will not be injured. Another rod 6 can then be readily procured from stock or from any nearby blacksmith shop and the bolster quickly repaired.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be. made in the form, detailsand arrangement of the device without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.

1. A bolster column having thereon a replaceable chaiing plate cast thereto and having holding means passed into said bolster column. n
2. A bolster column having a chang plate cast thereto, said plate extending through holes in said bolster column whereby said plate can be replaced by a steel plate riveted through said holes.
3. A side frame structure comp-rising a bolster column having an opening through its upper end, a compression member ass ing therethrough, said bolster column aving holes therethrough into said opening, and a cast metal filler in said opening and extending into said holes for rigidly securing the bolster and compression member together.
4. The structure set forth in claim 3, said compression member having a hole therethrough through which said cast filler extends.
5. A side frame structure comprising a bolster column having an opening through its upper end and a recess extending down the inner side thereof, compression members, passing through said opening and a cast filler in said opening securing said compres- 4sion member therein and extending down the side of said bolster column in said recess and forming a chafing plate.
6. .A side frame' structure comprising a bolster column having an opening through its lower end, a. tension and tie member extending therethrough, said bolster column having a hole through its lower side extending into said opening, and a cast filler in said opening surrounding the tension and tie members and extending into said hole.
7. The structure set forth in claim 6, and a hole extending through said tension and tie members substantially centrally of said opening through which the cast iller extends.
8. A side frame having in combination, a journal box cap having a socket therein, a compression member having its end disposed in said socket and a cast filler surroundin the end of said compression member and securing the same to said cap.
9. A side frame having in combination, a journal box cap having a socket therein, a 4compressionv member having its end disposed in said socket, and a tension member also having its end disposed in said socket, and a cast liller in said socket surrounding the ends of said members and connecting the same to said cap. 10. The structure set forth in'claim 9, said tension and compression members having a hole therethrough through which the cast filler extends.

l2. The structure set forth in cla-im 9, the end of the tension member extending beyond the end of the compression member and being upwardly turned in said socket to be in line with the end of said compression member.
13. The structure set forth in claim 9, the end of said tension memberv being lbent downwardly in said socket and having its end portion then bent upwardly in said socket.
14. The structure set forth in claim 9, and a bolt extending through said cap member, said cast filler, the end of said tension member, and centrally through the top of said ljournal box for securing the cap to said journal box.
15. The structure set forth in claim 9 the ends of the compression member and tension member disposed in said socket being welded together.
16. A side frame structure comprising a journal box having a central lug projecting from the bottom thereof, a tie member having an opening therein adapted to extend over said lug, and means for locking the lug to the tie member.
17. A side frame structure having a bolster column, an angular lug extending from the side thereof having holes therein and a U-shaped rod having its ends disposed in and secured in said holes to form a brake beam attaching member.
18. A. side frame structure comprising a bolster column having a short integral lug projecting therefrom having holes therein, and a bent rod extending into one of said holes forming a loop member for the attachment of a brake beam.
19. A side frame comprising a bolster col- 5 and a cast metal filler in said opening and passing through said aperture securing said tension member to said column member.
20. The process of constructing a truck side frame consisting in providing compreslO sion and tension members, Welding the ends of the same .together and then securing said Yends in a journal box coupling head by east metal. v

25. A side frame comprising a bolster column, a compression member, said column having a passage therethrough and having alined holes in the top and bottom of said passage, and means extending through said holes and through said compression member for securing the latter tosaid column.
