BRAKE BEAM HANGER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 6. 1921.
Patented Aug. 22, 1922.
CHRISTIAN r. nn'rznn AND cnnnnris LEGABD, or surnar'on, WISCONSIN BRAKE-BEAM HANGER.
v ful Improvements in Brake- Beam Hangers, of which the. following is a specification,
reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This inventlon relates to brake beam hangers and has special reference to such a devlce for use 1n connectlon wlth rallroad cars wherein the brake beams are pivotally suspended by ordinary hangers and subject to accident by the dropping of one or both ends of the brake beam.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a more convenient auxiliary or emergency hanger for brake beams ,than heretofore known.
Another object is to provide one that may be conveniently employed in the repair or adjustment of the brake beam of a car.
Other objects and advantages of the peculiar construction will appear in. the further description of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming part of this application in which like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of our improved hangers,.and
Figure 2 is a side elevation of a portion of a car truck showing the relative position of the hanger thereto.
The hanger comprlses a vertically disposed supporting member 1 made of flat bar iron, twisted intermediate of its ends as at 2, so that such twisted portion is positioned at right angles to the remaining portions at eit er end. The upper end of the supporting member is provided with a plurality of holes 3 by which it is attached to the bolster 4 of the'car truck 5. The lower end of the member 1 is flattened and has an eye 6 formed therein into which the rams horn end 7 of thebeam encircling portion or stirrup of the hanger is removably enaged.
The stirrup portion of the hanger is substantially rectangular in form except that the upper portion 8 is inclined upwardly towards the twisted portion 2 of the member 1, where it is turned at right angles horizontally and formed into'a pin member 9 which is engageable, through a suitable hole in the twisted portion 2, therewith, and a cotter 10 is used for retaining 'said parts cooperatively united. I
From the 'foregoipg it is evident that we Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 22, 1922. i Application filed June 6, 1921. Serial No. 475,273.
have provided a separable hanger, the stirrup portion of which may be quickly removed entirely when occasion demands same, or may be simply disconnected at its upper end by removing the cotter 10, thereby allowing the stirrup'portion to drop down pivotally and be suspended from the eye 6 in the member 1, if such is suflicient for the necessary accessibility to and about the brake beam, which latter is illustrated at 11 in Figure 2, the beam shown in dotted lines, Figure 1, representing that of a common Lbeam, and which, when in position normall dependi .from the bolster of the truck, orms an e cient and reliableemergency hanger.
Having thus described our invention,
4 what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
' 1. The combination with a railroad car brake beamhaving the usual pivotal support therefor, of an auxiliary safety support for said beam comprising a vertically isposed depending "member rigidly supported upon the car, and a stirrup like member 'separably united at one 'end to the lower end of the vertically disposed member and surrounding the brake beam and also separably united at its uppermost end to the vertically disposed member.
2. An auxiliary safety support for a brake beam of the character described comprising a depending rigidly fixed member disposed adjacent one side of the brake beam and having an eye formed in the lower end thereof, a stirrup like member surrounding the brake beam with a ramshorn or helical terminal at one end and engageable within said eye with the opposite end removably attached to the member, substantially as and for the purpose described. v
3. An auxiliary hanger of the character described for brake beams comprising a rigidl fixed depending-member and a horizontal disposed stirrup 'member disengageab e at its upper end with the fixed member for removing and applying the brake beam, and normally pivotally enour signatures in the presence of two Witgaged' at its lower end to the lower exnesses.
trelnity of the fixed member,.and means CHRISTIAN F. RETZER.
"whereby rotative and swinging adjustment CHARLES LEGARD.
of the stirrup will separate same from the Witnesses:
fixed member. J. H. Bo'rsoN,
In testimony whereof we hereunto atfix F. S. CAMPBELL.
