BAG- res'rnnnn.
Application filed July 14, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, JOSEPH BREZIN and Louis BERZON, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in BagFasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to bag fasteners of the type used more especially in connectionwith hand bags. 7
Our invention has as its primary object the provision of a fastener which may be readily unfastened to permit of the separation of the overlapping frame members of a bagand which when the members are separated will be automatically positioned to fasten the members together again in the closing of the bag.
Further objects ofour invention are to provide a fastener which will be efiicient in operation and so constructed as to comprise a minimum of parts, which may be readily assembled without the use of tools, and which when assembled will be proof against derangement and failure in operation.
Heretofore the known types of bag fasteners have been open to the objection that if they were so constructed as to be unfastened and remain unfastened until the bag was opened, it was necessary to fasten them when the bag was shut, or if, on the other hand, they were so constructed as to fasten by the'mere shutting of the bag, it was necessary to positively hold them in unfastened position until the bag was opened. Either form of fastener is unhandy and troublesome to the user, as in the first case fastening of the bag is frequently neglected, and in the second case opening of the bag is rendered difficult by the fact that it isnecessary in the ordinary bag to maintain two fasteners in unfastened position while the fastener incorporated with the lock is unfastened and in order to open the bag all three must be simultaneously maintained unfastened.
In accordance with our invention, the above described objections and difliculties are eliminated and a bag equipped with our fasteners may be readily opened and when closed will be securely fastened with only Serial No. 484,534.
the necessity of merely unfastening the fee teners which then remain unfastened until the bag is opened, whereupon they are automatically prepared to securely fasten the bag when it is again closed, all of which will ap car more fully hereinafter.
aving now indicated in a general way the nature, purpose and advantages of our invention, we will proceed to adetailed description thereof, with reference to the ac companying drawings in which we have illustrated a preferred embodiment, and in whic'h- Fig. l is a view of the upper portion of a bag with fasteners embodying our invention attached.
Fig. 2 is aside elevation of a fastener em- Fig. 4 is a section on line 4.'4 Figure 3.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the fastener in fastening position. 7
' Fig. 6 is a longitudinal view similar to that of Figure 5 with the fastener in un fastened position.
Fig. 7 is an elevation of a modification of a detail of the fastener.
The casing a, provided with a slot 6 in one of its end walls, is secured to the overlying frame a of the bag 03 by means of lugs e, which extend through suitable slots in the frame and are bent over as shown in Figure 5. The casing f is provided with side walls having elongated slots 9, 9 near their lower edges and having their upper edges'bent outward and downward to form L-shaped flanges k. The end walls of the casing f are made of less height than the side walls. The casing f is adapted to be secured within the casing a by means of lugs 71 which extend from the side walls of casing 11 and are bent upwardly to engage the L-shaped flange k oneside with a lateral extension 11,, the edges of which are bevelled as shown in Figure 4:-
Positioned within the casing 7" adjacent to the locking member j is the bolt control-' 7 lingmember 1' having downwardly extendof casing f, and through the. slot 6 in casing a, and forms a finger piece, whereby the controlling member may be moved relatively to the locking member and through the aotion of the cam surfaces m, m and r, r efliect a raising or lifting of the locking member p r The fiat bow spring 10 rests on the flange k of he locking member with its ends bearing against the under side of the top of easing a and acts to tend to keep the locking member in lowered or locked position.
In practice, assuming the bag to be closed, the various parts will be in the position shown in Figures 3 and 5. If now it is desired to open the bag, the extension t is pressed and the bolt controlling member moved relative to the'locking member. The action of cam surfaces 7", 1" and m, m causes the locking member to be raised against the permit the locking member to assume its normal locking position under the influence of'the spring w. VlVhen the bag is again closed, the receiver striking the bevelled edge of the bolt lifts it, and when the bag is' fully closed the bolt drops into the re ceiver.
In Figure 7 is disclosed a modified form a of controlling member comprising a. round member 8 adapted to underlie the flange k on the locking member and provided at one end with an extension 25 forming a finger piece. shaped extension 1) which, on the opening of the bag, is engaged by the extension to on the bolt receiver to return the controller to normal position and permit the bolt to be lowered by spring w.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A bag fastener comprising a bolt receiver, a locking member adapted to engage said receiver to lock a bag, a spring adapted to act on said locking member and yieldingly retain said member in looking position,
'member, to move and hold said locking cmember out of locking position, and a cam carried by said receiver acting, when said bag is opened, to shift said controlling member to permit said locking member to return to locking position.
2. A bag fastener comprising a bolt receiver, a spring tensioned locking member adapted to be snapped into interlocking en- I gagement with said receiver to lock a bag, a controlling member in engagement with said locking member and adapted to be manually shifted to move and hold said locking member out of locking position, and a cam carried by said receiver adapted, when the bag is opened, to engage and shift said controlling member to permit said locking member to return to locking position whereby, when said bag is closed, said locking member will snap into engagement with said receiver.
In testimony of which invention, we have hereunto set our hands, at Philadelphia, Pa, on this 11th day of July, 1921 piosnrn BREZINI Louis BERZON.
