UNITED STATES Ldillhtlt? I PATENT orries.
ADJUSTABLE FOOT BEST.
Application filed April 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIKITAs D. VLAVIANOS, a citizen of Greece, residing at Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Foot Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable foot rests, and more particularly to a foot rest specially adapted for use in connection with shoe-shine stands.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a foot rest which may be readily moved into a substantially horizontal position to permit a person to readily ascend or descend from the usual seat or chair positioned above the rest without any danger of the persons clothing catching on any part of the rest. A further object is to provide a rest of the character stated of simple construction and neat appearance which may be readily produced and installed at small cost and which is eliectually locked in operative position. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of the rest as used;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side view, partly in section;
Figure 3 is a front view.
The device includes a standard 1 at the upper end of which a foot plate 2 is supported by means of brace elements 3. Standard 1 is provided, at its lower end, with a flattened extension or tongue 1 which fits into a correspondingly shaped recess 5 provided in a neck 6 of a base plate 6. Tongue 4 is shaped to provide, at its forward portion, a shoulder l which rests upon the upper edge of element 6* of neck 6 and neck 6 is provided, in its rearward portion, with a slot 6 extending from the upper end or" the neck. A pin 7 is secured through neck 6*, this pin extending through a slot 8 in tongue 4: and disposed longitudinally thereof. The lower forward corner of tongue L is rounded at 4 and the tongue is provided, in its lower end, with a transverse recess which receives the upper portion of a V-shaped head '9 of a securing bolt 9 1923. Serial No. 635,100.
which passes through base plate 6, the main portion of head 9 being positioned in a recess 9 of the base plate. The bolt 9 is of suflicient length to be inserted through a suitable supporting structure and to receive a nut, thus providing simple and eflicient means for securing the standard to the base of the shoe-shine stand.
IVith the parts in the positions illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the standard 1 is securely locked in upright position. By raising standard 1 so as to bring the lower end of tongue 4 above element 6 of base plate 6, the standard may be swung downwardly and rearwardly about pin 7 into substantially horizontal position, this movement being permitted by the slot 6 of neck 6 In Fig.
1 I have illustrated one of the foot rests in upright or normal position, the other foot rest being shown in lowered position to permit a person to ascend to or descend from the chair A. In this position the foot rest is disposed substantially horizontally and all danger of the persons clothing catching in the rest is eliminated. This device presents a very neat appearance and is of simple construction and operation and may be readily produced at small cost, all of which features are of importance in a device of this character.
What I claim is In a device of the character described, a standard, a base provided with a neck, said neck being provided with a recess and the standard being provided at its lower end with an element fitting into said recess, pin and slot connections between said element and the neck, the element being provided at its lower end with a recess, and a securing member passing through the base and provided with a head adapted to fit into the recess at the lower end of the element for looking the same in upright position, the neck being provided with a slot to accommodate the element at the lower end of the standard to permit the standard to be turned into hor- NIKITAS i). VLAVIANOS.
