UNITED srArus PATENT ounce.
Application med January 15, 1883. Serialjlt'o. 612,704.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. MUSIC, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the count of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cosmetic Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cosmetic receptacles generally.
An object of the invention is to provide a receptacle of this character designed particularly for use in connection with lip sticks, and wherein the receptacle is formed of separable sections designed so that when separated from each other one section may be held in one handof the user and employed as a mirror while the other hand of the user is employed in the manipulation of the stick upon the lips of the user.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel device of this character whlch will be simple of construction, compact and capable of being used with the greatest convenience and facility.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are ereinafter fully described, are particularly ointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which 2- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of using the device.
Figure 2 is a vertical section on an em larged scale through the device showing the mating sections connected together.
Figure 3 is an end view of the device showing the mirror.
Figure 4 is a section through the cap section showing a modified form of the invention.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4: showing a further modified form of the invention.
Cosmetics such as lip sticks are generally included in vanity cases or the like and when it is desired to use the stick it is necessary to resort to the use of either a wall mirror or such mirror that is included in the makeup oil a vanity kit. This invites considerable inconvenience. In the device which I will now explain in detail I have brought together novel sections of a lip stick receptacle in which one section is capable of being held in one hand of the user and uti I lized as a mirror while the other section is held in the other hand and manipulated upon the lips of the user. Each section of the device therefore functions in a highly useful manner and after the device has been used the two sections may be joined together so as to constitute a complete housing for the 11p stick thereby maintaining the same in a highly sanitary condition.
In carrying the invention into practice, I use a barrel or cylindrical like section 5 and a cap section 6. The section 5 is opened at both ends and slidable in said section is a follower 7 having a cap 8 in which one end of the lip stick 9 is seated and secured to the cup is a device 10 whose marginal portions 11 are in resilient and yieldin engagement with the internal walls of sai section 5. In this manner the finger of the user may be inserted in one end of the section 5 and brought with pressure against the cup '8 to feed the lip stick from the opposite end of said section 5. In this manner practically all of the lip stick may be consumed.
The cap section 6 is also barrel like or cylindrical and same telescopes one end of the section 5. The cap section is normally open at both ends and as illustrated one end is provided with an annular bead 12 7 whose inside walls define a groove 13 for the reception of the marginal edge of a mirror 14. Also arranged in this groove is a spring ring 15 which acts as a retainer to secure the mirror in position and to hold the same confined against the flange 16 of said bead 12. In this form of my mvention the coated surface of the mirror is arranged inside of the cap 6 so as when the cap is removed as shown in Figure 1, the external surface of the mirror may be held in the presence of the user so that an image of the lips may be cast in said mirror At this time the other section 5 of the device is held in the other hand of the user and the stick manipulated against the lips as illustrated.
In Figure 4 the cap section 17 is hinged at 18 to a supplemental cap section 19. "The mirror 20 has its clear surface 21 arran ed inside of the cap so that when the sectlon 17 is sprung open upon the hinge 18 the mirror may be used. The section 19 of the cap is provided with a latch 22 engageable with a teat 23 on the mirror carrying section. In this form the mirror carrying section 17 is closed at one end by a crown 24.
In the modified form shown in Figure 5 the cap section 25 is formed as an integral structure closed at one end by a crown 26 against which a mirror 27 is confined by a spring ring 28. The clear surface of the mirror is inside of the cap so that by looking into the open end of the cap reflection may be cast into the mirror. p
In either of the forms of the invention I essentially combine a cap section having a mirror with a body section having a cosmetic or lip stick so that when one section is separated from another both sections can be employed for the useful purpose of conveniently applyin the cosmetic while casting an image of t e lips of the user in the mirror of the other section.
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is 1. A cosmetic receptacle including a secthe other section is employed to directly apply the cosmetic.
2. cosmetic receptacle of the character'- desc'rlbed comprising a cosmetic receiving section and a closure section, a mirror retained in the closure section so that when the sections are separated the mirror containing section may be heldin one hand of a user of the device to cast an imagein the mirror while the cosmetic containing section is employed for applying the cosmetic, a follower slidable wit in the cosmetic containing section and including a cup for receiving the lower end of the cosmetic, a member secured to the bottom of the cup and being provided with resilient marginal edges in yieldin engagement with the interior walls of the cosmetic containing section as and' for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I. have aflixed my signature.
SAMUEL E. MUSIC.
