Patent No. 1,125,356, for sash fastener, dated January 19, 1915, andhas for its main object to provide a sash fastener of the general type referred to, which is so constructed that the locking element will not project forwardly a considerable distance from the sash which carries it when said locking element is in its inoperative position, and thus strike against and damf age the window shade or window ycurtain when the sash is raised. v
Another object is to provide a sash fastener of the general type referred to in which the locking element is so constructed that after it has been moved into its operative position gravity causes said locking element to assumer and remain in such a position that it cannot -be rendered inoperative by shaking or jarring either sash of the window. Other objects and desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out. y

Referring to the drawings which 'illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A and B design-ate the top and bottom sash of a window and C designates as an entirety a locking element vcarried by the bottomsash and adapted to be engaged withthe top sash so as to lock said sash either in a. completely closed or partially open posit1on. yTo disengage the looking portion 1l of the locking element` CV from the top sash A, it is necessary to turn or rotate the loclring element slightly so as to bringythe pin or pins 4; thereon into alignment With a notch or notches 5 at the sides of the hole in the plate E through Which the locking element extends and then pull the locking element C forwardly so as to Withdraw the locking portionA l of same from the aperture in thetop sash A. This operation causes the hinge or joint 3 of` the locking element C to be positioned in front of the plate E on the bottom sash B of the Window,
and thereafter, the operating portion 2 of the locking element can be moved into a position at right-angles to the locking portion 1, thereby causing said operatingportion 2 tobe arranged in close proximity to the sash B Where it Will not interfere with the Window shade or Window curtain when the bottom sash is raised or lowered.
To lock the sash it isnecessary to first swing the operating portion 2 of the locking element into such a position that it is in longitudinal alignment With the lockmg portion l, then turn said locking element kinto such a position that the pin 4 thereon is in alignment with the notch 5 in the plate E and thereafter move said locking element rearwardly so as to insert the locking portion 1 of same in one of the apertures D or D in the top sash A, the locking element coming to rest in such a position that the pin 4 thereon is positioned behind or on the inner side of the plate E. In order to insure the locking element movlng automatically into such a position that t-he pin 4 thereon will be out of alignment with the notch 5 in the plate E when the locking portionl of the locking element is 1n engagement withthe top sash A, I'preferk to provide the operating portion 2 With a weighted linger piece 2a that swings downwardly into a vertical position, as shown in Figure 2, thereby turning the operating portion 2 of the llocking element into such a position that the pin 4 is out of alignment with the notch 5 as soon as the operator removes his finger from the finger piece 2a of the locking element at the completion of the operation of moving said locking element into its operative position. The locking portion 1 of the locking element is preferably of slightly greater diameter than the operating portion 2 of the locking element and the hole in the plate E through which the locking portion 2 passes is made small enough so `as-to prevent the locking portion 1 from passing through same, thereby causing the plate E to also serve as a means for preventing vthe portion 1 of the locking element C from being completely Withrawn from the bottom sash B of the WinoW. Having thus described my invention,- what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
1. A Window sash fastener, comprising a' slidable locking element mounted in a Window sash and adapted to be inserted in an aperture in a co-operating sash to lock the sash together, a stop on said locking element, an abutment co-operating With said stop to prevent said locking element from being Withdrawn from said aperture, and a Weighted portion on said locking element for causing it to automatically assume such llO a position that said stop is arranged in operative relationship with said abutment.
