CLINCHING APPARATUS.
Application filed February 21, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. ENDE, a
ments in clinching apparatus and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character particularly designed and adapted for use in connecting the leather or the like to the frame of a travelling bag, gladstone or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising two relatively movable jaws between which the work is adapted to be inserted together with moving one of said jaws toward the other and wherein the jaws are provided with punching members or pins to facilitate the connection between the frame and the leather or the like.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the pins can be readily removed and replaced and which is of particular importance in the event the pins should become dull or otherwise unfit for use.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved clinching apparatus whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan illustrating a clinching apparatus constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of the structure as illustrated in Figure l; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line Serial No. 620,412.
3-8 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, T denotes a table or other support upon which is mounted a bed or plate 1, said plate being provided with the parallel guide n1embers 2. The guide members 2 are maintained in applied position upon the plate 1 by the bolts 3 or the like which also serve to maintain the plate 1 in working position upon the table T. The plate 1 is provided with an extension 4 herein disclosed as proj ecting beyond the adjacent edge of the table T and terminatin'gin an upstanding elongated jaw 5, said jaw 5 being particularly adapted for use in connection with straight work.
Slidably mounted upon the plate 1 between the guides 52 is a slide 6 provided atits outer end with an elongated jaw 7 for coaction with the jaw 5.
8 denotes a foot lever which is supported for rocking movement by the table T and which extends freely slot 9 in the plate 1 and is engaged within an opening 10 in the slide 6 so that upon proper operation of the foot lever 8 the jaw 7 may be forced toward the jaw 5 or moved in a direction therefrom.
Threaded through the jaws 5 and 7 at points spaced lengthwise thereof are the pins 12, said pins extending beyond the inner or working faces of the jaws 5 and 7 and provided with means whereby when the frame of a travelling bag, gladstone or the like is inserted between the jaws 5 and 7 the leather or 119 like will be caused to be effectively held by said frame,
By having the pins 12 threaded through the jaws 5 and 7 it will be readily understood that said pins can be separably removed or replaced and which is of particular advantage in the event a pin should become dull or otherwise unfit for use.
The accompanying drawings also illustrate the further embodiment of my invention particularly adapted for use in clinching the corners of the frame. This arrange ment is substantially the same as hereinbefore described with, the exception that each of the jaws 5 and 7 is substantially in the form of an inverted V with its inclined edges in perpendicular relation.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a clinching apparatus constructed in accordance with my through an opening or invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and itwill also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A clinching apparatus for the frames of travelling bags or the like comprising a sup port, a plate mounted on said support, said plate having an extension disposed beyond the support and terminating in an upstanding j aw, a slide mounted upon the plate inwardly of the aw, said slide being provided With a aw for coaction with the first named jaw, a rocking foot lever operatively held by the support and freely extending through the plate, the slide being provided with an opening in which the lever is engaged, said foot lever providing means to move the slide and its jaw toward or from the first named In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
EDWIN A. ENDE.
