Application med September 21, :19%. Serial No. 663,941.
and State of lllinois, have invented certain' 4new and yuseful Improvements in Follow Boards, of whichsthe following is alspecification.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in follow boards 'for filing cases, or the like,
and has for its principalobject, to provide i a new land improved device of the character described, which is simple in construction and capable of vbeing readily adjustable to l5 vary the capacity of the filing case or drawer; Other objects of invention will appear from time vto time as the description proceeds. A
The invention may be@ be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one form in which it may be embodied.
'ln the drawing: Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a filing a5 case provided with my improved follow board. 1 A
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the filing case shown in Fig. 1.`
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal lsectional view eo of the case.
Fig. 4: is an enlarged detailed View, in perspective, of the follow board.
Referring to the details of the drawings, my invention is shown as applied to a -ling oase 10, such as may be used for holding indexed cards, papers or the like, although it will be understood that the invention may also be applied to tiling cabinets, drawers .or the like. noA The follow board comprises an upright member 11, extending across 'the case and adapted in practice to maintain the material `4.in a compact body adjacent the front end fof the case. The board is adjustable to e5v various positions in the case by means of' a projection or tongue 12, extending into a longitudinal slot 13 formed in the bottom 22 of said case. Said tongue is suitably secured at the forward margin of the board -oo in the form shown and is iared outwardly at opposite sides thereof to it in co-operating inclined surfaces 14, 14 of the slots. Thus, when' the board is in position transverse of the case the tongue is free to slide longitudinally'thereimbut retains the board `wide base, as indicatedv at 17, which proin the case. ln the preferred form shown, said tongue is made of a semi-tlexible material, such as leather.
vThe board is provided with a relatively l B0 vides a support therefor inA co-operation with the tongue 12 when rearward pressure is applied, as forinstance, by papers or the dike in the case. Such pressure has a tend- 'ency to tip said board rearwardly, about cri the rear margin 18 of thebase, but is resisted by the wedge shapedtongue 12, se. cured in the slot as described. f i
Suitable retaining members are provided for holding. the follow board in adjusted 7o position longitudinally of its case. In the form shown, these membersI comprise a pair of pins 20, 20 projecting from the bottom of the base 17 adjacent opposite ends thereof and adapted to register with a series of 'coacting recesses 21, 21 in the bottom 22 of the case.
The parts are preferably arranged so that the front surface 23 of the follow board is inclined rearwardly when the base 17 is resting flatly on the botto-m of the case as shown in F ig. 2, with the pins 20, 20 in interlocking engagement with a pair of recesses 21, 21. Vthen in this position it will be observed that the tongue 12 is in close wedging engagement in the slot 13 so as to resist any rearward pressure on the board tending to rock it on the rear margin 18 of its base 17. The board is thus securely held in place while in position to hold papers or the like, but when it is desired to move the board longitudinally of the case, the board may bec tilted forwardly until the iiD pins 2 0, 20, are released from their respective recesses, in which position the tongue se 12 is loosened in its engagement in the slot 13 so as to permit the board to be moved bodily along the case into any desired position, where pins 20 are again engaged in another pair of recesses 21, 21. An inclined or chamfered surface 2li is preferably provided at the front margin of the base 17, in order to permit the board to be freely tilted forwardly in releasing the tension upon the tongue 13, thus permitting the board to slide easily during its adjustment. The flexibility of the tongue further aids inthe ready manipulating of the board in the manner described. The board may be entirely. removed from the case by turning me 'it at an angle to the case, thus allowing the tongue 12 to be withdrawn from slot '13.
Although I have shown and described one form in which my invention may be embodied, it will be understood that many changes inform and construction will ccur to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my .vided with a longitudinally Ydisposed slot,
a follow boardhaving a base, interlocking Y surfaces on said base adapted interlockingly to coact with other surfaces-at a plurality of positions along said case bottom whensaid board is in normal uprlghtJ posi- Ytion, and a flat flexible tongue projecting downwardly ad`acent the forward -margin of said base an having laterally extending margins inserted through and engaged transversely of said slot, to secure said tongue 'against Vertical-movement therein,
' whereby said board may be released for ad] tilting the same forwardly.
ustment longitudinally of the case byv 2. In a filing case, a bottom provided with a longitudinal slot wider at its bottom than at the top thereof, a follow board having a base provided with a plurality of projections, a. series of co-acting recesses in said case bottom adapted to be engaged by said projections, and a flexible tongue projecting downwardly adjacent the forward margin of said base, said tongue being secured flatwise of the board and having wedge shaped lateral margins fitting trailsversely of said slot, and affording longitudinal adjustment of the board when the latter is tilted forwardly, to release said projections from their respective iecesses.
3. In a filing caso, a bottom provided with longitudinal slot, a follm.v board having a base provided with a plurality of projections, a series of co-acting recesses in said case bottom adapted to be engaged bysaid projections, and a tongue project-' ing downwardly adjacent the forward margin of said base, said tongue having wedge shaped lateral margins itting the sides of said slotand insertable in said slot when the board is turned at an oblique angle thereto.
In 'witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 15th day 'of September, A. I).,1923
PETER VAN VLISSINGEN.
