J. C. NlCHOLS BRIDGE FOR HARNESS PADS Filed May 22, 1923v John E Ni1:hc|15 dfm Patented Apr. 8, 1924.
* UNITE-D BRIDGE F613 nmme f r Application filed May 22,
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN C. NIoHoLs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sheboygan, in the county of 'Sheboygan, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridges for Harness Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to bridges for harness pads.
This case constitutes one of a series of cases filed simultaneously having elements cooperating to form a harness without stitching.
Bridges, as heretofore constructed, for harness pads for use in guiding straps across the pad, such, for'instance, as the back straps, have not proven wholly satis-' factory for the reason that these bridges could not be so arranged that the straps guided thereby would at all times be retained within the bridge. It was frequently found that the bridges opened up slightly from the pad and allowed the straps to work against the securing means producing either binding or rapid cutting of the securing means or the straps.
This invention is designed to overcome the above noted defects and objects of such invention are, therefore, to provide a simple type of bridge piece adapted to be secured to a pad in a manner to prevent the gripping of the guiding strap beneath the ends of the bridge piece, and to provide an extremely simple form of bridge piece which is serviceable and offers the minimum of resistance to the free passage of the guiding strap.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a. portion of the pad showing the bridge piece in position thereon, parts of the securing means being shown in section for clearness of illustration.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the pad showing the bridge piece in position and partly in section, such view being on a larger scale than Figure l.
The bridge piece comprises an elongated transverse member 1 which is spaced from the pad and is slightly arched. It is preferably provided with rounded forward and rear faces as illustrated and has downward- 1y projecting end portions 2. These end with the assurance 1923.: serial 640,687. 1
portions have integrally formed transversely slotted or eyeletted ears whose inner and bottom ends 3 (see Figure l) merges into the end portions 2. The outer portions 4 of these ears are spaced from the inner portlon and are positioned upwardly from the pad 5. It is to be notedthat these ears extend upwardly and outwardly from the terminal portions of the bridge. I
convenient means of securing the bridge piece in position is by means of straps 6 which are passed through the ears and are folded over and stitched down to the pad as indicated at 7. This stitching is preferably arranged closely adjacent the ears as shown in the drawings.
It is to be noted that by having the ears upwardly and outwardly directed that the securing means pulls downwardly upon the outer portion 4 of such ears and forces the end portions 2 of the elongated arched member 1 and the inner portion 3' of the ears downwardly against the ad into binding engagement therewith. This construction precludes the sliding of the strap 8, such as the back strap, shown in Figure 1, from creeping or sliding beneath the end portion of the bridge piece and cuttingthe securing means or the strap, and binding of the stra It will, therefore, be seen that a highly desirable type of bridge piece has been pro vided which is of extremely simple construction, and that the bridge piece may be secured to the pad in a simple manner that its end portions will be at all times held in binding engagement with the pad.
Although a specific form of the invention and one application thereof have been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood ously 'embodied and application thereof varied. It is, therefore, to be understood that the invention is to be limited only as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination of a harness pad, a strap guiding bridge comprisin a bridge piece spaced from said pad an terminating in outwardly and upwardly directed ears, and securing means attached to said pad and engaging the outer portion of said ears to hold the lower portion of said ears in binding contact With said pad.
2. A bridge piece for a harness pad comthat the invention may be variprising an elongated member having downwardly from said ends.
3. A bridge piece comprising an upwardly arched elongated member having downwardly extending ends, formed integrally with and apertured ears said ends and ar-' ranged transversely of said elongated member and projecting upwardly and outwardly from the ends of said elongated member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
JOHN C. NICHOLS.
