Description

' April s 1.924.,
Filed Oct. l5, 192@ Patented To allwzomt 'may concern: Y
Be it known that CHARLES F. ING, a citizen of the United States oit infietv ice, residing at Dayton, county of Mont-- gomery, and State of Uihio, have invented certain new and useful 'improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the :following is a full, clear, and exact description.
TheV resent invention leletee to inter nal-com ustion engines and in its preferred form which. is chosen for the purpose ot' description relates to engines et the cit-- cooled ty, e
ln application, Serial No. Blet, tiled I.lune 29, 1920, by the applicant on engine cylinders and in application Serial No. .514,014, filed November 9, i921, which is a continuation thereof, there has 'been described a cylinder for intern1l-combustion engines of the aircooled type and the present invention, in its preferred forni relates to, engines involving this torni of cylinder and to improvements therein.
In the 4former application there is described a cylinder of ferrous metal having attached thereto in effectivethernial Contact therewith, cooling elements of metal having a substantially gi'eater heat eondnctivity than the metal of the cylinder proper. Stich cooling elements are described as preferably of sheet copper folded and attached to the cylinder in suchnianner as to forni longitudinal fins each being of llattened tubular forni with one edge ot the -tuhe attached to the cylinder.
It has new been found that, in the prepa- 'rationfof such cylinders, it is sntlicient to attach these cooling elements to the cylinder in such fashion as to have a considerable arca of the cooling elements only upon that side of the cylinder `which is adjacent to the exhaust Valve. The side ot' the cylindeiI adjacent to the intake valve need have but little it any cooling" means as the incoming comparatively cool-'gases exert considerable cooling cectnpon this portion of the cylinder and head. l
lt will lee very readily seen that the invention which is described lietein `will result ina very great' cheapening and lightening oil the com ilete engine, the' doing away with the cooling;- eleinents upon one'side o: each cylinder permitting placing two cylinin close proximity toter@ a, thus decreasing the length of the complete engine and consequently the Weight.
Further objects andl advantages of the present intention will loe apnarent cono the following desciiption, reeeiice loeiiig lied to the accompanying diewing Wlieein preferred enileodiinents ci the present .intention are clearly shown.
Fig. l is-a eonventionel representation. of a tour cylinder air-cooled. engine, showing the relative positionsoit the two cylindets forming a pair and ot the two pains.
Fig. 2 is a ,elan View of the two of the cylinders of l with the drei: tithe removed..
Fig. 3 1s a. plan View oit the othern two cylinders of Fig. l, with pert ol thedteitt tube shown in place and hailing teinoved from one ci the cylinders the superstroc ture and exhaust and intake pipes.
Fig. 4 -is a View similar to Fig. 2 of e niodiication thereof. ln Fig. l the engine is te resented ee loe ing a font cylinder air-cooled engine rovided with cylinders 10 carryiinj, eooing ll preferably of the .form described in the applications above referred to and sun rounded by draft sleeves l2 which latter communicate with a draft tithe 13 leading outer wall oit the cyl'lndet', this line being perpendicular to the diametetot the cylinder which is paiallel te line tin'ough the' .two valve ponts. "lie other meniliei' of the pair of cylinders is inode the seine fashion and the two are thetenlnon placed together with the sides troni which the tins have been removed, adjacent each other.
ln the form et cylinder shown in Fig. ft, thev ne are attached to the cli/linden@ in eccentric relation thereto so that tliesliorter hns occupy the seme position einen the cylinder is oecngoietl hy those tins, as described Y maximum.tempogiitui'omay be oitziiiiod with less fm meta.
