, WIRE SPREADER.
Application filed July 31, 1922. Serial No. 578,759.
To all whom it may conaem Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. Hns'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residin at Tascosa, in the county of Oldham and tate of Texas, have invented a new and useful Wire Spreader, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire Spreaders, and aims to provide novel means for preventing parallel electric wires from moving into engagement with each other to short circuit the electric current passing therethrough.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily applied to parallel wires at points intermediate the supporting posts thereof.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will-appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view disclosing the spreader and means for securing the spreader to the parallel wires, one of the clamping members being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the spreader, one of the clamping members being removed.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the de vice embodies a spreader bar 5 which may be formed of any suitable rigid material. Integral extensions 6 are formed at points adjacent to the ends of the spreader and terminate in restricted portions 7 which are formed with enlargements 8 on opposite sides thereof.
The clamping members employed for clamping the spreader to adjacent wires arranged in parallel relation, embody blocks 9 and 10 respectively, which blocks are constructed of suitable insulating material such as porcelain, hard rubber or the like, and formed with opposed depressions 11 adapted to accommodate the enlargements 8 to connect the clamping member and spacing bar, when the blocks 9 and 10 are moved into clamping relation with each other Grooves 12 are formed in the blocks 9 and 10, which grooves extend transversely thereof and are disposed in adjacent faces of the block, so that when the blocks are brought together, the grooves will provide an opening to accoimnodate the electric wire associated therewith. The blocks of each clamping member are secured together by means of a bolt 13, which bolt is supplied with a nut 13, whereby pressure may be brought to bear on the blocks, when they have been positioned to cause the blocks toclosely engage the enlargements 8 and wires 14 asso ciated therewith.
It might be further stated that each of the blocks 9 and 10 is formed with a cut out portion, the cut out portions registering with each other to accommodate the restricted portion 7 of the extension 6.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when a spreading bar as described, is positioned between adjacent parallel wires at points intermediate their suspension points, the wires will be held in proper spaced relation with each other eliminating any possibility of the wires being moved or blown into engagement with each other to short circuitthe electric current passing therethrough.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a wire spreading device, a spreader bar, having integral extensions, said extensions including restricted portions, enlargements formed on opposite sides of the restricted portions, blocks having registering grooves formed in the adjacent faces thereof and disposed at one end of the blocks, said blocks having depressions formed in the adjacent faces thereof and disposed adjacent to the lower ends of the blocks, said depressions adapted to receive the enlargements of the extensions to grip the extensions and secure the spreader bar thereto, said registering grooves adapted to accommodate wires, and means for securing the adjacent blocks to gether.
