IMPROVEMENT IN SCAFFOLD-CLAWIPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,875, dated March 24, 1874; application led January 24, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN R. CnooKETT, of Oso, in the county of Fayette and State of Texas, have invented a new. and Improved Scaiiold-Clamp, of which the following is a specification:

I n the accompanying drawing', Figure l represents a top View of my improved scaffoldclamp as applied to an upright post of a scaffold; and Fig. Z is a side view of the same, showing the manner of supporting the joists.

The object of my invention is to furnish a simple scaffold-clamp for putting up carpenters and masons seaft'olds quickly, securely, and wit-hout the use of nails or bolts, so that not only time and material is saved, but also accidents fromk slipping (.r disconnecting of parts of the scaffold are rendered impossible.

My invention consists of a elevis which is placed around the upright post of the scaffold and secured by a bolt, and provided with a central curved or eye-shaped projecting part, to which the supporting-piece of the joists is hung by means of a loop or eye. The supportingpiece is secured to the main post by an arm with a forked sharpened end or claw, while a forward-projeeti n g U -shaped arm takes up the joist, pressing the forked end strongly into the post by the weight upon the joist.

In the drawing, A represents the clevis, which is applied :in horizontal position around the post, so as to straddle the same, and then attached thereto by the pin or bolt, A', passing its perforated flattened rear ends. The front part of clevis A opposite pin a is curvedl centrally into a U, eye, or other shape, as shown in Fig. l, which curved part projects slightly forward, and has pivoted or hung to it the supporting -piece B. Piece B is bent of suitable material and strength, and suspended in vertical position from clevis A by means of a loop or eye, b, passing through the part a. One arm of piece B is curved donniward toward the post A, and secured to the same by its pronged sharpened claw eu d, while the other arm extends in a forward direction, carrying in its U-shaped outer end the horizontal joist-piece of the platform. The whole piece B carries the joist like a pivoted bracket, and enters the more into the post A the greater the weight on the horizontal arm of the same. The joists are in this manner firmly and securely retained on the upright posts. The scaffold is rapidly put up and taken down, and the wooden posts not injured by nails or bolts, which are altogether dispensed with by this scaffold-clamp.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The supporting bracket-piece B of the joist having an eye-shaped loop, I), with downwardextending arm and forked claw end, and forward-projecting' arm with Ushaped end for the joists, substantially as set forth.
