T 0 all whom t may concern Y Be it known that LlioUrs A. PRESTEK, la citizen oi the United States, and a resident ot Seattle, in the county of King and State of Viashington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lNrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in wrenches especially although not necessarily adapted for embodiment in wrenchesV oi' the socket type. Y
ln certain types of wrenches, particularly in socket wrenches, it has been found a matter ot extreme difficulty to so construct and organize the head of the wrench or the part thereof which serves as or carries the work engaging means that this head will have the high degree of strength essential to enable it to carry out its intended purposes and at the same time keep its size, form and weight within the limits essential to practical manipulation or working in the crowded spaces in which it is citen necessary to use such wrenches.
One ot the principal objects oit the present invention is to provide a wrench of this character which is light in weight, compact, relatively small in size, well balanced and proportioned and at the same time possessed of adequate strength to withstand the severe strains and stresses incident to its usage.
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement oi parts which will be hereinafter more Ytully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part oi this specification, and in which:

1 eferring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration the invention is shown embodied in a wrench of the socket type, the numeral 10 designates generally the head of the wrench which is provided with an axial opening 11 of polygonal form adapted to coact with the operating means 12 shown diagrammatically in dotted lines in Figure 1. It is to be understood that this operating means may be ci any known or desired form and preferably it includes a shank or stud adapted to be tted inthe bore or opening 11 and to be held therein by a set screw 13. rlhe operating means for the wrench :torms no part ci the present invention and may be or' any type of construction.
rihe head 10 is preferably constructed ot hardened steel and at the end thereof opposite the opening 11 it is provided with a socket 1- of hexagonal forni. This socket le constitutes the work engaging means of the wrench. The periphery oi the head around the socket 14 has formed therein an annular channel 15. rllhis channel extends entirely around the socket 14 and for practically the entire length thereoil although terminating short of the lower end of the wrench in order to leave an annular flange i6 'for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. wrapping of steel wire, designated at 16, is wound on the head 10 within the channel 15. llhis wrapping 17 is wound on thehead underI great tension and the turns ot this wrapping' are soldered or otherwise secured to each other and to the head 10 in order to hold or secure the wire on the head and in the channel 15. lt is to be noted that the flange 16 ser fes to prevent downward displacement oi this wrapping and this flange in conjunction with the other wall of the channel and a thin steel bushing 18 serves to house and protect the wrapping. The bushing 18 is tted on the head so as to enclose the wrapping of wire shown in the drawings and this bushing is welded or otherwise suitably secured in position. @if course it is to be understood that the turns of the wire 17 may be welded or otherwise secured in position in lieu of being soldered as above indicated. By placing the wrapping 1'? under great tension and securing the turns of this wrapping to each other and to the head 10 in the channel 15 around the work engaging means of the wrench the wrench is greatly reinforced and strengthened where strength and capacity to resist strain is most needed, and this is accomplished without increasing the weight of the wrench and without impairing its susceptibility of embodiment in a compact and balanced structure capable of use and convenient manipulation in crowded and ditlicult or inaccessible places.

1. A socket wrench having a head of hardened steel formed with a work engaging socket, said head being provided with an annular channel in its periphery, a Wrapping of steel Wire Wound under tensionfin the channel of the head, theturnswof the Wrapping bein@` soldered to each other and to the head, and a bushing fitted on the head and secured thereto and enclosing said Wrapping of Wire.
2. A socket Wrench having a head formed with a socket and provided Witha channel in its lperiphery, a Wrapping of Wire Wound Vunder tension in the channel ofsaid head and secured to said head, and a bushing enclosing said Wrapping.
Y3. A socket Wrench having a head formed With a socket and provided with a' channel in its periphery, said channel encircling theysocket, anda reinforcingwrapping of Wire wound under tension in the channel of said head and secured therein.
