Be it known that I, f-rNnnRs jinnnnsnno, citizen of Swedei'i, and residing at Mahno, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Feedid' ater Heaters and Spark Ari-esters, of which the following is a specitication.
The present invention relates to combined feed water heaters and water cooled spark arresters for locomotive boilers or the like of the kind in which series or sets of horizontal or substantially horizontal pipes are arranged in the smoke box of the boilers, through which'pipes the feed water is allowed to pass before entering into the boiler.
The object of the invention is to increase the efliciency of such machinery by a special arrangement of the pipes in relation to the path of the flue gases through the smoke box, simultaneously as slime and impurities in the feed water are substantially prevented from settling in the pipes and these can be taken care of and cleaned without ditiiculty.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a vertical section through the apparatus mounted in the smoke box of a locomotive boilers. F 2 is a plan view of the same.
The apparatus consists in a known way of groups or series of horizontal circular pipes arranged concentric in relation to each other and to the smoke stack, and these pipes are arranged in rows displaced in relation to each other as well vertically as horizontally in such away that the fine gases when passing to the tunnel are compelled intimately to sweep around the different pipes, thereby delivering their heat to the feed water circulating through the pipes and ext-inguishing sparks contained in the gases when coming into contact with the pipes cooled by the feed water. The number of pipes in each row may be adapted according to cir cumstances, and the number of rows may also vary in the same manner.
According to the invention the curved pipes 1 are fastened with their ends into tube plates 2 which are bolted together two by two using a suitable intermediate packing material in such a way that they connect the different curved pipes 1 to form a number of spiral or helical conduits leading from the top to the bottom of the ap paratus. By using pipes of suitable dimensions and a suitable number in each set the total cross sectional area of each set of pipes may be equal or almost equal to the cross section of the pipes leading the *ater to and from the apparatus. Hereby the advantage is obtained that the stream of water in the pipes of the apparatus has about the same velocity as in the inlet and outlet pipes so that deposits of mud in the apparatus will be prevented or reduced to a minimum. When a more efiicacious cleaning is desired the cover of the upper chamber or water chest 5 is removed and a suitable bent jet nozzle may be inserted in the pipes for separate cleaning. In the manner described the cleaning process can be made more or less eiIective and the apparatus in most cases can be thoroughly cleaned only by blowing water through. the same.
In order to remove such deposits that can not be removed by blowing water through the pipes the apparatus is taken apart, whereaiter each curved pipe can be bored through by means of a suitably driven flexible shaft carrying a suitable tool.
For the purpose of cleaning the pipes externally'the sheets 10 provided under the sets of pipes for carrying the flue gases towards the circumference of the apparatus, be'tore they pass between the pipes, are provided with hinges at their inner edges in such a way that they may be dropped, thus 7 making the pipes easily accessible from below "for cleaning purposes.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A combined feed water heater and water cooled spark arrester, comprising independent groups of substantially horizontally arranged curved pipes, adapted to bev positioned in the smoke box of the boiler and concentric to the smoke stack, tube plates connecting the ends of the curved pipes together to form a plurality of helical conduits extending from the top to the bottom of the heater, a water chest provided with a feed Water inlet and in communication at the bottom of the heater with the inner helical conduits, a water chest provided with a feed water outlet and in communication with a plurality of outer helical conduits, and a water chest at the top of the heater in communication with all of said conduits.
