IMPROVEMENT IN SHANK-LASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 148,801, da/ced Man-eh 24,1874; applic-ation filed August 25, 1873.
T0 all 207mm it mag; conccm:
Be it known tha-t I, JOSEPH H. BEAN, f Oineinnznti, in tl1e eounty 0f Hamilton and Stute 0f Ohio, have invented a new a-ud useful Improvement in Shank-Lasers; 2md 1 (l0 he1eby deelare that ohe following is a full zmd exzwt description of the san1e, referenee being had to tl1e aecompzmying drawings a-nd to the letters 0f reference marketl thereon.
My deviee is intendecl for grasping the leather 011 bot-h sides of the last; With a positive moti0n, and f01 drawing it over and partizmlly around the last, anal f011- holding it in such osition in a more convenient manner and my invention therein cousists in the construetion iu1d arrangement 0f the grasping-jaws and their operative mechanism, 2m 1 in the m'eans employed for elmnping 01 holcling t-he szune in position, all as m0re fully hereinafter expla-ined.
In order t0 enable those skilled in the art to construct and use my conorivance, I proceed t0 deseribe the szune in connection wioh the drawings belonging hereto, in whieh Figure 1 is a front view 0f my shank-laster wih the jaws closed and grasping; Fig. 2, a side view 0f the same, and Fig. 3 a front; view Wll3ll the jaws extencled and open before grasping.
Like letters clenote similar parts in ezwh fig ure.
In my conrivance are tw0 lower similar parts, A A, hzwing handles a, suitable for grasping, and properly pivotecl together at the pointmarked b. T0 one 0f these pa-rts A is pivoted, centrally, a curved raek-bar, B, With teeth 0 inclined inwarclly, which passes tlnough a slot, d, in the eorresponcling psut A, whieh slot is provicled upou its lower outside With a suitable stop, c, which engages with the teeth of the rackbar, ancl holds the handles from separation, while it allows free dem 0f movement in closing them togethen 'lo the tops 0f each of the parts A A is 0ne part, O, 0f ehe gra'sping-jmvs, and t0 each 0f these jaws again the ot-her grasping-jaws, D, are pivotecl. These jews D, extending below the p0int where they eure pivoted t0 the jaws (J, h2we their lower euclsfpivoted together. It follows thei: when the handles are separated, the grasping-jaws O D a1e extendecl upwardly and outwardly, ancl opened. VVhen the handles commenee elosing together, the graspingjaws first move upwardly ancl outwardly a little, and at the same sinne elose am]. grasp he leather. Upon closing the handles together, thejaws (lI2LW inwardly and downwardly, draning the leather with them, and when this is done suffieiently, ehe hamlles are released, zuul the mekbar holds them in place.
The great aclvantage 0f this contrivanee is, that it grasps the leather with a positive m0- tion, a1'1d Will not slip 01 feil 130 seize ancl hold, and tlmt it requires 110 manipulation to clamp the hanclles in the clesired position, es it aets automaoically in this particular.
Having thus described the construetion 0f my shank-la-ster, its manner 0f operation, aml 's01ne 0f its advantages, what I claim as new therein, and my own irivention, is
l. The eombinatiou of the parts A A with the grasping-jmvs O D, construeted und 211'- mngecl substantially es sei; forth.
2. In combinatiou With the parts A aml jaws O D, the raek-bar B, eonstructed substantizmlly es 21ml f0r the purpose sei; forth.
This speeifieation signed and witnessed this 20th dzmy 0f August, 1873.
JOSEPH H. BEAN.
Witnesses I. H. MARTIN,
J. W. SEWELL.
