CLEVIS Filed Jan. 26, 1923 INVENTOR f 7 pm W M ATTORNEY WITNESS:

ANDERSOiN' CARTER, OF STALLO, MISSISSIPPI.
CLEVIS.
Application filed January 26, 1923. Serial No. 615,175.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDERSON CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at, Stallo, in the county of Neshoba and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clevises, of which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to produce a clevis for plows, cultivators and the like in which the draft end or draft bar thereof is pivotally mounted thereon and normally held in closed or operative position by spring locking means, and in which means is provided for releasing the locking means when it is desired to detach the draft animals.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawing which accompanies and which forms part of this application.
Inthe drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clevis in accordance withthis invention, the dotted lines showing the pivoted end or gate in open position.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section on 4& of Figure 1.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the forward part of a plow beam, and 2 designates the vertical bar of the clevis having the parallel extending arms 3 and 4 which are disposed over the upper and lower faces of the beam 1 and which are secured thereon by the usual wrench bolt 5. The vertical bar 2 is in contact with the outer end of the beam 1, and the lower bar or arm 3 of the clevis projects a considerable distance beyond the upper bar 4. thereof. To the end and to the upper face of the arm 3 there is hinged, as at 6 the movable element or draft bar 7 of the clevis. The member 7 is of the usual construction, the same having its upper end provided with an arm 8 that is directed toward the arm 4 of the fixed element of the clevis. The arm 8 has its end provided with a reduced rounded extension 9 that is designed to be received in a socket 110 in the outer end of the arm 1 when the swinging member or draft bar 12 of the clevis is in normal position.
Secured to the outer surface of the arm 8 of the swinging member of the clevis there is one end of a fiat spring 11, the said spring being rounded adjacent its outer end to provide a hooked portion 12 designed to be brought over a lip 13 integrally formed on the outer surface of the arm 4. From the hook the sprng is rounded to provide the same with a curved lip 14:, and this lip is designed to be engaged by a ring member 15 which is hinged, as at 16 to the outer face of the arm 4: of the clevis. If desired, there may be attached to this ring 16 a flexible element such as a cord or chain 17, and
a pull thereon will swing the angularly disposed ring out of engagement with the lip 14 of the spring, permitting of the latter springing outwardly to bring its hook 12 out of engagement with the lip 13 and consequently permit of the free swinging in an outward direction of the section 7 of the clevis on the fixed section thereof.
It is thought that the foregoing descrip tion, when taken in connection with the drawing will fully set forth the construction, operation and advantages of the improvement to those skilled in the alt to which this invention relates, it being mere- 1y necessary to swing the section 7 to bring the end 9 thereof into the socket 4 of the upper arm of the fixed section of the clevis and thereafter to exert a pressure against the spring to bring the hook portion 12 thereof to engage with the lip 13,
when the ring can be swung over the lip 1-1 of the spring. With my improvement, fractious animals may be readily released without danger to the implement to which they are hitched or danger to the driver having arms, the lower arm of the fixed section being of a greater length than the upper arm thereof, and the swinging section being hingedly secured to said lower arm, the swinging section having an arm directed toward the upper arm of the fixed section, said arm having a reduced end, the arm of the fixed sectlon havlng a socket to receive said end thereof, a fiat arched spring secured to the said arm of: the swinging section having a hook portion terminating in a lip, a lip formed 011 the uppererm of 5 the fixed section to be engaged by the hook of the spring, and a, ring pivotaily secured upon the upper arm of the fixed section and swingable to engage the lipped end of the spring "for holding the hook portionthereoi' in engagement with the lip of said arm. 1
In testimony whereof I aflix my signzv tin-e.
ANDERSON CARTER.
