MOLD.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM GLA'rz and Cimnnrzs S. (lLA'rmc-itizens of the United States, residing at Manchester, in'the county of 'Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention has reference to molds, and more particularly to a mold for producing cement blocks or tablets bearing letters, numbers or other characters.
The primary object of the invention 1s to provide in a mold of this character novel means whereby a number of character hearing elements may be selectively arranged upon one wall of the mold to produce any desired combination of characters which will appear on the face of the finished bloclcor tablet, and in which the interchangeability of the character elements permit of the molding of numerous blocks or tab-lets bearing different combinations of characters,
The foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form art of this specification.

As disclosed by the drawings, the base 1 of our improved construction of molds comprises a flat plate of any desired material which, adjacent to its ends has on its under face transverse cleats 2. The cleats extend beyond the sides of the base and have their lower corners notched, as at 3.
The. upper face of the base is provided with any desired number of longitudinally arranged channels 4, the side walls of the channels being beveled inwardly, as at 5, the faces of the channels being straight. In these channels are received letter or other character bearing elements in they nature of blocks 6. Each of said blocks has its opposite edges beveled downwardly and outwardly, as at T, and each of said blocks is of a size to be snugly received in the channels 4, and when so arranged the beveled edges of the said blocks will be incontact with the .beveled side walls provided by the channels.
The letter or character upon each block 6 is let into the said block, and between certain of the blocks there are arranged spacer blocks 8 designed to divide the words or characters delineated by the blocks, the spacer elements being also of a size to be snu ly received in the channels and have their edges beveled to contact with the beveled side walls of the channels. Certain of these spacer elements may have let in punctuation marks, but the en spacer members are referab-l of a greater length than the c aracter bearing spacer elements, and these last mentioned elements have their under faces contacted by adjustable members which are preferably in the nature of short bolts 9 which enter threaded openings from the under face of the base 1, the shanks of the bolts entering the central portions of the respective channels. The heads 10 of the bolts 9 are preferably provided with transverse openings 11 whereby a suitable instrument may be inserted for tightening-the bolts against the'spacer blocks and thus olding all of the blocks roperly positioned in the respective channe s.-
The body of the mold is also constructed of any desired material, and when a block or tablet having an angle face is desired,
one of the side members of the mold body is of a greater height than the other, and the outer edges of the ends of the mold body are arranged at an angle between the sides.
The body is of a size to be snugly received on the base, and the same is constructed of two hingedly connected sections. Each section includes an end 12 and a side 13. One of the sides, and one of the ends have their confronting faces mitered, and the said side and the said end are hingedly connected, as at 1 1. The seeondside 13 has its free end formed'with a projection in the nature of a nose 15, the said nose, upon its inner face being thickened, as at 16 in a line with v. the end of the said side. The shoulder provided upon the inner face of the said widened portion 16 is designed tobe contacted by the outer face of the end of the first mentioned section, when the sections are brought together, and the end of the said first mentioned section is provided with, pivoted hooks 17 that are designed to be swung over headed lugs 18 on the outerend of the side provided with the nos 15. All of the sections constituting the body have on their inner faces at their lower edges longitudinally arranged angle strips 19, and at their connected or contacting portions with vertical angle strips 20. In this manner, the joints between the hinged and connected ends of the respective sections are fully covered and protected.
The ends of both of the sections are provided with depending lugs 21 that are received in sockets 22 on the upper face of the base 1 between the channels therein. The
sides of the body members have pivotedv thereto, as at 23, hook niembers 24, and these hooks are designed to be swung to engage with the notched ends 3 of the cleats 2 on the base 1, and thus effectively hold the body on the base.
It will be understood that in use of the mold the plastic material is poured into the body of the mold which is allowed to set, but when it has hardened sufliciently to be handled, the body sections 1 of the m'old are" unlatched and swung away from each other, permitting the block or tablet to rest on the base which may be removed to a suitable place where the block or tablet is more thoroughly dried and hardened. Thereafter the block is removed from the base, and on one of the faces of the block will appear raised letters corresponding to the characters let in the blocks 6. Preferably, the base is suitably treated so that a glazed surface will be given to the face of the blcek or tablet.
Having claim spacer blocks also received in the channels for spacing the first mentioned blocks, and' longitudinally adjustable means passing through the under face of the base for conta'cting the spacer blocks for holding both the spacer and indicia bearing blocks in the channels. I
