DON V. RUNNION, OF MILWAUKEE, VIISCONSI N, ASSIGNOR 'IO L. J. MUELLER FURNACE COMPANY, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
-FURNACE-CASING-ATTAOHING MEANS.
Application filed February 20, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, DON V. RUNNroN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and connect the parts together, but considerable difficulty is experienced in connecting the thin sheet metal casing edges to the outer flanged portions of the cast metal face or front of the furnace due to the fact that it is desirable to position the nuts and the ends of the bolts within the casing and it is difficult to hold the nut while drawing the parts together.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features, and provide a furnace casing attaching means which may be easily connected to the casing and to the front plate and which will permit the parts to be quickly drawn together.
A further object of the invention is to provide a furnace casing attaching means which is adapted to connect the outer casing to the front plate without requiring any openings to be made in the casing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a furnace casing attaching means which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved furnace casing attaching means and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing, in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is a horizontal'sectional view of portions of the front plate and casings of a Serial n6. 537,919.
hot air furnace provided with the improved casing attaching means;
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the inner clamping member; and
Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional riew thereof taken on line of Fig. 2.
teferring to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a portion of the outwardly angled cast meta front or face plate, 6 a portion of the inner sheet metal casing and 7 a portion of the outer sheet metal casing connected to the front by the improved attaching means 8. The outer casing is also held in engagement with the front by a threaded means 9 which draws the edges of the casing towards the front while the attaching means 8 holds the parts firmly in lateral engagement with each other and prevents the leakage of air therebetween. Said attaching means 8 comprises a bolt 10, a nut 11 and a clamping plate 12. The plate 12 is of angular shape in cross section to form a medial longitudinally extending groove 13 for holding the opposite side portions of the nut 11 in position, and the opposite side edge portions of said plate are angled outwardly to form bearing parts 1a which engage the front plate and the inner side portion of the outer casing 7 respectively. The grooved portion 13 is also provided with tangs 15 which are cut from the plate and extend over the upper and lower edges and partly over the back of the nut 11 to hold said nut in position so that its threaded opening will register with the bolt opening 16 of the plate. The plate 12 is adapted to extend diagonally across the inner sides of the angular portion of the front plate as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the said angular portion of the front is recessed as indicated by the numeral 17, and the said recessed portion 17 is formed with an opening 18 through which the bolt 10 extends.
As thus constructed the nut 11 will be maintained in position by the tangs and the side portions of the plate, and the screw is sufiiciently long to permit the parts to be loosely connected together and the edges of the casing slipped between the plate and the front when drawn together by the threaded means 9. When properly adjusted, the plate 12 is drawn clampingly against the edge portion of the casing by the bolt 10 to force the casing tightly against the furnace front.
It is to be understood that a member of the threaded means 9 and the attaching members are used on both side edges of the furnace front.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the furnace casing attaching means is of very simple construction, and is well adapted for the purpose described.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a furnace having a front member of angular form in cross section, of a means for connecting a sheet metal casing edge portion thereto, comprising a plate positioned diagonally with relation to the angle of the front member and having one of its side edge port-ions bearing against the casing edge portion and its opposite edge portion boa-ring against one of the walls of the front member, said plate having a medial opening and means adjacent the opening for holding a nut in register with the opening, a nut held by the holding means, and a bolt extending through the angular portion of the front member and through the plate opening and threaded through the nut to clamp the casing edge portion between the edge portion of the plate and the front member.
2. A furnace casing attaching means, comprising a plate having a medial opening and tangs on opposite sides of the opening, a nut in register with the opening and engaged by the tangs, and a bolt extending through the opening and threaded into the nut.
3. A furnace casing attaching means, comprising a plate having a medial longitudinally extending groove and an opening and tangs positioned above and below the opening, a nut having its opening in alinement nally extending groove and an opening and tangs positioned above and below said opening, the opposite side edge portions of the plate being flanged outwardly, a nut having its opening in alinement with the plate opening and held in position by the tangs and the side portions of the plate forming the groove, and a boltextending through the opening and threaded into the nut. V
5. In combination with a furnace front plate having a sheet metal casing and an angled portion provided with a bolt opening, of a means for connecting the casing to the flange, comprising means for drawing the edge portion of the casing towards the front plate, a plate member having a medial vertically extending groove and an opening and tangs above and below said opening, the opposite side edge portions of the plate member bearing against the inner side edge portion of the casing and the front plate re spectively, a nut having its opening in register with the plate member opening and held by the tangs and the side portions of the plate member forming the groove, and a bolt extending through the front plate opening and the opening of the plate member and threaded through the nut.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
DON V. RUNNION.
