and more particularly to that type of file cases which are adapted to be constructed of sheet metal, the object of'the invention being to provide a device of this eharacterwhich embodies novel features of construction whereby great strength and rigidityhisfob- 1 nessgof. the sheet metal, as indicate at 1.
tained. A further object of the inyention is to provide'an expansible filing umtwhlch'com' prises a plurality of similar --andinter-" changeable filing sections, means bein pro;
vided for protecting and reinforcingt "e e'xr posed sides of the end sections.
With these and other ob ects in viewgbthei invention consists in certain novel combina tions and arrangements of the parts as Will more fully appear as the description procoeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a file case unit formed of ,a plurality of filing sections constructed and assembled in accordance with the present invention, portions being broken away and shown in section to illustrate more clearly the manner of connecting the adjacent filing sections, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through one of the end walls of the file case unit, showing the reinforcing member applied thereto. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is an enlarged horizontal sectional view through out of the forward vertical corners of the file case unit. Fig. 5
is a plan view of the reinforcing plate detached, looking at the same from the inner side thereof, and Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4 through one of the rear vertical corners of the file case unit.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following descri tion and indicated in all the views of t e drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numerals 1 designate a plurality of similar and interchangeable file case sections of any suitable construction, each of the said sections being provided with a plurality of drawer receiving compartments 2. These various file case sections 1 may be formed of sheet metal, in
which instance the sides of the sections would probably be formed of a sin le thickf Anyfdesired number of the file case seetlons 1 may be fitted together side by side,
4 are shown as applied to the inner faces of the sides 1", the said reinforcing plates being formed with openings which correspond to and register with the openings 3. Fastening members such as the bolts 5 are adapted to be inserted through registering openings 3 of the abutting sides 1 of adj acent 1e case sections 1 for the purpose of holding the file case sections to ether, the said bolts being capped by suita le thumb nuts 6. In this connection it may be noted, as shown more clearl by Fig, 3, that the openings 3 of the si es 1 are flared outwardly so as to provide diverging mouths leading to the openings of the plates 4 for the purpose of facilitating the insertion of the bolts 5 in position.
Protecting and reinforcing plates 7 are adapted to be applied to the exposed sides of the end file case sections 1. These plates 7-are preferably formed of sheet metal and are of a size and shape corresponding to the sides of the file case sections. The edges. of the plates 7 are formed with the inwardly extending reinforcing flanges 8 whi'ch'serve to stiffen and reinforce the edges of the case and to hold the plates-spaced from the file case sections, the'said flanges terminating in the inwardly-extended feet. 9 which bear against the file case sections. The inner face of each of the protecting and reinforcing plates 7 is provided with nut plates 10 which are brazed, riveted or otherwise per-' manently secured thereto and are positioned thereon in a manner to correspond with the position of the openings 3 in the side walls 1 of the file case sections.
- tective me iuln for the exposed side of the end sections 1, and also to reinforce and stifien the same throughout, and particularly about the edges thereof.
.From the foregoing description it will be obvious-that any desired number of the file case sections 1 may be assembled side by side to provide a completeunit of .any capacity, the abutting side Walls of adjacent file case sections 1 being connected by. the bolts 5,
, while the protecting and reinforcing plates sheet-metal wall provided at a plurality of 7 are applied to'the exposed walls of the end file case sections 1. Great strength 'andrigidity in the complete unit is thereby obtained and the principal objection which has hitherto existed against metal filing cabinets, namely, that of loose joints, completely overcome.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters, Patent, is 2- 1. A file case section having a permanent points therein with fastener openings, a separate detachable. outside sheet-metal, wall-plate coextensive with the permanent wall andfhaving edge-flanges abutting the outer side thereof, said separate wall-plate being provided upon-its .innerside with a plurality, of. projecting fastening elements adapted to extend through said fastener openings, and holding means engaging said fastening elements at the-inner-side of said permanent wall,
2. A file case unit includin interchangeable file case sections adapte to be assembled side byside and formed at corresponding points in the side walls. thereof with passing through registering openings in the openings, fastening members adapted to pass through registering openings in abut-. ting side walls of adjacent file case sections, detachable pi'otecti'ngand reinforcing plates for the exposed sides of the end file case sections, and fastening members passing through the openings in .the said exposed sides of the end file case sections for retaining the protecting and reinforcing plates in position.
3. A file case unit including interchangeable file case sections adapted to be assembled side by side and provided in the side walls thereof with corresponding openings,
reinforcing plates applied to the side walls and formed with openings corresponding to v the openings in the side walls, fastening members adapted to. be inserted through registering openings in the abutting walls of adjacent file case sections to hold the file case sections together, protecting. and reinforcing plates for the exposed sidesof the end file case sections, and fastening members passing through the openings of the said exposed sides of the end file case sections for holding the protectingand reinforcing plates in position.
4:. The combination of a file case section, detachable protecting and reinforcing plates for the file case section, nut plates applied to the protecting and reinforcingplates, spacing blocks interposed between the protecting and reinforcing plates and the file case section and formed with threaded lugs engaging .the nut plates, and means cooperating with the spacing blocksto hold the 'pro testing, and reinforcing plates in position.
5. The combination of a file case section having openings in the sides thereof, a detachable protecting and reinforcing plate for aside of the file case section, a nut plate applied to the protecting and reinforcing plate, a spacing block interposed between the protecting and reinforcing plate and the file case section, said, acing block being formed with a threade h lug engaging the lug plate and also with athreaded' lug passing through an opening of the file case section, and a nut capping the second mentioned threaded lug for holding the protecting and reinforcing plate securely in position.
6. A file case unit includinginterchan e able file case sections formed in the si es thereof .with corresponding openings, bolts abutting sides of adjacent file case sections to hold the file case sections together, -pro-' tecting and reinforcing plates for the -ex posed sides of the end file case sections, nut plates applied to theprotecting and reinforcing plates, spacing-blocks interposed between the fileica-se sections and the protecting and reinforcing plates, the said spacing blocks being formed with threaded lugs en- In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my gaging the nut plates and also with threaded signature in the presence of'two witnesses.
