Description

March 18 1924. 1,487,633
F. c. wAsHBURN TEXTILE ROLL Filed July 29, 1921 Patented Mar. I3, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
TEXTILE ROLL.
Application led July 29, 1921.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. VASH- BURN, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Textile Rolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My object is to equip a wooden textile roll with improved end caps or rings to reinforce the roll and prevent its chipping, the construction also aiding in securely holding the rings upon the roll.
Figure l is an end View of a roll and ring embodying iny invention. Figure 2 shows the formation of one of the rings before assembling the parts. Figure 3 is a partial section through a roll showing the ring in position.
The wooden roll l is of the ordinary cyf lindrical formation used in textile machinery. The ring 2 is of metal. It may be made of any metal and formed by stamping, rolling, casting, or otherwise. As illustrated in Figure 2 the ring comprisesa cylindrical body 3 having its end beveled on its inner face as at l to form a chisel edge. The ring is formed with an outward extending annular flange 5 whose edge 6 is sharpened and bent inward substantially parallel with the body of the ring. This flange may be of any width.
Serial No. 488,346.
When the ring is driven into the end of the roll the parts, assume the disposition shown in Figure 3. I-Iere it will be noted that as the ring penetrates the wood the inner bevel 4 causes the ring to expand, thus compressing the wood and increasing the strength and term of usefulness of the roll. Also, the expansion of the ring tends to securely hold it in the roll and prevents its becoming loosened. The flange 5 protects the end of the roll and prevents it from chipping away.
I claim as my invention:
l. A wooden textile roll having a metal reinforcing ring on its extremity, said ring comprising a cylindrical body having its end beveled on its inner face to forni a chisel edge, and having an annular outward extending end flange formed with a sharpened angular edge to penetrate the end face of the roll.
2. A wooden textile roll having a metal reinforcing ring on its extremity, said ring comprising a cylindrical body having its end beveled on its inner face to form a chisel edge and the outer end of the cylindrical body having an annular outwardly extending ange having its outer edge turned inwardly and sharpened to penetrate the end face of the roll adjacent its outer periphery.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
FREDERICK CLIFTON WASHBURN.
