To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MooREHoUsE Mrrcii- ELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing atA Quebec, Province of' Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Shuttle- Tips; and I do hereby declare that the f'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to ywhich it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to loom shuttles and more particularly to the manner of attaching the metallic tips to the ends of shuttles.
Herebefore these metallic tips had been applied to the shuttles in such a manner as to exert an outward pressure upon the wooden body of the shuttle, as they are subjected to knocks and liars when passing through the loom, and this outward pressure has a tendency to split or crack the shuttle. Y
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a simple and firm connection between the metal tips and' the shuttle, so as to overcome the inconveniences herebefore experienced and permit the use of timber in making the shuttles, that has herebefore been wasted.
With this and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the description progresses, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the manufacture of loom shuttles, great ofv the shuttle herebefore,
difliculty is'experienced in properly vpreparing wood for the shuttles, as the end pressure on the `shuttle as it passes through the loom is vso great that it will tend to crack or split the same. To increase the life the heart of the wood has not been used, and the top pory tions of tree trunks as well as their branches have been left to waste. In the present invention I have provided a means for fastening the metallic tips to the shuttles which will permit the tips to take up the end'pressures or knocks upon the shuttle, and which will prevent the body of the shuttle from cracking or splitting thereby greatly increasing its life.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a metallic tip of the ordinary configuration, which is to be applied to the end of a loom shuttle, and this tip has formed therewith a shank consisting of a tapered portion 2 and a cylindrical portion 3. The loom shuttle 4 is substantially of the same general construction as the shuttles now in use, and the tips 1 are to be applied to the ends thereof, as better shown in Fig. 1. Formed within each end of the shuttle is a cylindrical recess 5 which is for the reception of the shank of the tip 1. Adapted to encircle the shank of the tip is a collar 6 having an outer cylindrical periphery and its bore 7 is so reamed as to have a truncated conical configuration, so that its end 8 which is of the smallest diameter extends nearest the tip 1, and the opposite end of the collar is provided with a relatively sharp or chisel edge 10. In fastening the tip to the shuttle the shank is placed within the recess 5, and this recess 5 is of greater length than that ofthe shank carried by the tip, as better shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. By means of a hammer the tip is struck to forcethe sharpened edge 10 of the collar to bite into the wooden body portion of the shuttle, and a portion of the shuttle is wedged between the inner tapered periphery of the collar and the outer tapered periphery of the shank, thereby securely fastening the tip to the shuttle.
As is well known the pressure encountered at the tip of the shuttle is such that it often causes the splitting of the shuttles and by this device I have overcome this difiiculty, as any undue. or extraordinary pressure at the shuttle ends will only tend to force the tips 1 inwardly and cause the collars 6 to bite farther into the shuttle ends. In this manner, pieces of timber containing the heart, which is now Waste, may be used, be-
