To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL KELLOGG, of Ypsilanti, in the county of "Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented an Improve ment in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a speciication The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of spring bed-bottoms; and its object is to so construct the same that the tension of the spring-slats may be regulated at will; that the head may be adj usted, in sections, at varying heights, to suit the desire of the occupants of the bed when the same is occupied by two persons-5 that the springs will be entirely noiseless in their operation, not lia-ble to get out of order, and be economical in construction.

Figure l is a perspective view of Iny improvement, with one section of the head raised higher than its fellow. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the head, with the head-bar of the frame removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective taken from the under side of the device.

In the annexed drawings, A represents a rectangular frame, made of any suitable and required size, the two sides thereof having L- shaped grooves a cut on their inner faces, and directly opposite each other, to receive the bar l5. Vithin the grooves a, one on each side, are placed the rubber cushions b, against which the ends of the bar B rest, to give it greater elasticity and prevent noise in the impact. Iiveted or otherwise properly secured to this bar B are the metallic strips C, preferably of any spring metal. The opposite ends of these strips are secured in like manner to the bar D, which latter is of sutlicient length to iit the width of the frame between the side rails. A pair of links, E, surrounding the bar D, are provided with screws F, which pass through the end of the frame, and, by means of suitable nuts, not only secure said bar D in posi tion, but enable the metallic strips to be tightened or loosened, as may be desired. These links are provided with elastic cushions el, to give greater elasticity to the bottom, and make theimpact against the bar noiseless. To pre vent the strips from cutting the mattress-covers or ticking,77 they may be covered like the springs usually employed in hoop-skirts. Rubber springs h are secured in any suitable way to the under side or edge of the frame, and

a-re designed to rest upon the slats ofthe bed-l stead to prevent noise when the frame and slats come into contact. To enable the head to be raised in sections, I use two or more short rectangular frames, G, to the outer ends of which are secured the shorter metallic strips H, while the other ends of said straps are riveted to the strips C, as shown, and to the opposite bars of the frames G, which are placed beneath the strips G. Pivoted to the outer bars of the frames G are the rack-standards 7c, the racks or notches in which engage with the loops or stops Z on the bar B, and by this means the head of the bed may be elevated, as desired, either as a whole or in sections, as shown.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is

l1. In combination, the frame A, bar B, metallic strips C, bar D, and links E, and screws F, the several parts constructed and attached together substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with the bar B, the rails H, provided with L-shaped grooves a and rubber cushions b, substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. In combination with the bar D, links E, and screws F, the elastic cushions d, substantially as and for Athe purposes specied.

4. In combination with the bars B D and metallic strips C, the rectangular frames G and metallic strips H, substantially as and for the purposes described. y

5. In combination with the bar B, frames G, and strips C, the racks 7s and stops Z, for the purposes specified.
