J. V. LOBELL POWDER DISPENSING BOX Filed Feb. 2].. 1922 James [label] Fetenteol Mar. 18, 1924;.
JAMES V. LOBELL, OF NEWARK, JERSEY.
POWDER-DISPENSING BOX.
Application filed February 21, 1922. Serial No. 538,185.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Dispensing Boxes, of which the folp 10 which is thus held securely in the groove lowing is a specification.
Th s invention relates to a powder-d spensing box for use 1n exterminating 1nsects.
An object of the invention is to providea powdersdispensing'box of the bellows type made of two pieces of metal or other material relatively clinched or fastened together to provide a non-refillable container and having improved nozzle means thru which the powder is ejected. A further and additional object is-to-provide a powder-dispensing box of the character above, specified having a distributing nozzle likewise serving as a means for closing or sealingthe-outletof the box' when not in use.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparentduring the continuance of the following descrip tion. V 7
V In the drawings v a v I Figure 1 is a top plan view of the powder box. 7 I
I Figure 2 is a vertical cross section taken on line 22.of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view ofthe front ornozzle Figures 4, 5, and Gare detail, sectional,
views illustrating the various methods of.
clinching the edges of the box sections, and Figure 7 is a view of a modified type of nozzle carrying-lid, and V Figure 8 is an end view of the formed nozzle. f 1 I In describing lII'ClStZLllfthQ invention as shown in the accompanying drawings, reference numerals 10 and 11. respectively indicate the top and bottom section of the box which are fastened securely to each other at the edges by clinching and, hence, made nonrefillable. The box may be constructed either of metal or other suitable material and of semi-elliptical shape as shown in full lines in Figure 1, or wholly elliptical as indicated by the dotted lines.
Top piece 10 is provided witha forwardly projecting lip 12 having a longitudinally extending depression or groove 13, the purpose of which will be hereinafter disclosed. This V. LOBELL,
the powder.
top is fastened to the bottom or container portion, 11 in any one of the several methods illustrated in Figures 2, 5 and 6 inclusive.
In Figure 2. the upper edge of container 11 isclinched, in any suitable manner, over and down upon the surrounding edge of top formed between shoulder 14 and the clinch ing portion 15. A suitablecut outf16is provided toaccommodate lip 12 which 'proi jectstherethru to-provide a'nozzle. It will be noted that groove 13 provides an outlet for the powder when the same is ejected embraced by clincher portion 18 of the top and in another instance is clamped by shoulders 19 and 20 centrally of clincher loop 21. The box may be provided on both sides. or either side with bellows means for ejecting The metal is curved or bellied outwardly as at" 22 to form the bellows which is confined by a circular depression 2 3 forming a surrounding ridge 23' located nearer to the rear end of the box than to the front end, thereby providinga space 24; at the nozzle into which the residueof the box, when nearlyiemptied. may be shaken a and thus readily ejected thru the .nozzle by the blast fromthe bellows.
Ordinarily the space provided by thegroove is sufficient to form anoutlet thru I which the powder maybe ejected but this outlet mayjbe enlargechif desired, by notch-' ing the edge of 7 container 11' below the grooveas at 25. :This'isseenmore clearly in Figures 3 and 4s; After the box has been filled,.,and "previously to 7 shipping them in quantities, lip 12 is bent' downwardly against the notched side of container 11 and seals the outlet, thereby preventing loss and waste of powder when shipping. lVhen reraised to its original projecting position it reopens the outlet 7 and provides a nozzle along which the ejected powder'passes when forced out of the box. The nozzle-lip is integral with the top 10 of the box and may be stamped out in one piece with the latter either .in the form above described or as shown in the modified view 1 of Figures 7 and 8. In the latter figures the top piece tapers to a point 26 and incisions25 are made in the top and at the base of. the point as shown to provide bendable side portions 28. Side portions-28 are folded downwardly along the dotted lines and curled under the point to provide a conveniently thrust into corners and other close spaces otherwise difiicult to access.
F-r'oin the foregoing it is believed that the advantages and operation ofthe invention can bereadily understoodand further detailed description is unnecessary.
That is claimed is:
1. A powder box of separable sections joined to provide a container, oneof said sections having a lip extension received within a cutout of'the other section, said lip extension being grooved to provide an outlet for the boxand adapted to be folded overthe outletto seal the box.
2. A powder box of separate sections relatively joined to provide a container, each of said 'sectionsbeing provided with a bellows, and an integral lip extension on one section and projecting thru a cut-out in the other sectionto provide a nozzle-outlet for the said container, said lip extension being foldable against the container to seal the outlet thereof.
3. A powder box of separable sections relatively joined to provide a container, one ofsaid sections having a cutout and the other ofsaid sections having an integral lip extension accommodated within the said outout to provide a nozzle, saidnozzle having opposite sides 'foldable thereunder to provide a tubular nozzle.
4. A powder box comprising a container having an outlet opening and a lid having a lip projecting outwardly of the box and above the opening to provide a nozzle, said lid having incisions at the base of the lip to provide side portions foldable under the lip to provide a tubularnozzle.
5. A powder dispensing box comprising-a container'and a cover, the said-cover being grooved to provide an'opening' between the eeann cover and container, thru which the powder is dispensed.
6. A. powder dispensing box comprising a container and a cover therefor, the said cover being grooved to provide an opening between the cover and the container thru which the powder is dispensed and the said containerbeing notched below the groove to enlarge the opening.
7. A powder dispensing box comprising a container and a cover therefor, having a nozzle forming extension, said container havinga slot below the said extension to provide an'outlet-openingand the said extension being foldable over the opening to seal the said container.
8'. A powder dispensing box comprising a container and a covertherefor, having a nozzle forming extension, said container having a notch below the extension and the said extension presenting a groove opposite the notch whereby an outlet opening is provided-between the cover andthe container.
9. A powder dispensing boxcoinprising a container and a cover therefor, having a nozzle. forming extension, said container iaving a notch below the extension, and the said extension presenting. a groove opposite the notch whereby an outletopening is provided between the cover and the container,
said extension being 'foldable over the opening to seal the container.
10'. A powder distributing box having a tapered distributing end provided'with an outlet-opening, and'a forwardly extending lip adjacent the outlet and foldable upon itself to provide a tubular nozzle around said opening.
11. A powder dispensing box having'opposite sides bellied outwardly to form a bellows and converging beyond the bellows to provide a' tapered distributing end, said tapered end having a distributing nozzle and providing a space into which the residue of the'box, when nearly einptied may be shaken for subsequent ejection thru the nozzle by the blast from the bellows.
In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature.
JAMES V. LOBELL.
